Aiden’s POV
My eyes danced from Jillian to Jamie, taking in the stark contrast in body language. Jillian, though physically very similar to Jamie, was standing in a position that screamed hostility. To the contrary, Jamie was staring at me, curiosity evident on her face.
Jillian spoke up first. “We’re leaving. Nurse!” she shouted out into the hall.
However, the words that Jamie said next were not expected. “No, we’re not. At least I’m not.” My heart soared for a moment, but fell when she continued, “You can do what you want, but I need answers.” That’s why she stayed. Answers. I sighed a little, but still felt victory that she wanted to stay.
However, when I glanced back at Jillian, hurt flashed through her eyes momentarily, until she composed her features and regained her stoic appearance. “Fine. You stay. I’m glad you’re ok. I need to go get Bella from the sitter anyways.”
“Jillian…” Jamie said, but she had already left, the door closing behind her. Jamie had a very expressive face and the hurt she felt was obvious.
“Jamie, I’m sorry that it turned out that way,” I said, stepping towards her. The door opened again and Dr. Michaels walked in.
“Hello, Jamie. I’m Dr. Michaels,” he said in a friendly tone.
“Hello, Doctor,” she replied back with a half smile.
“Do you have any results, Doc?” I asked, looking hopefully at him.
“Yes, her numbers are steady and I would feel comfortable releasing her,” he said, which helped to calm my wolf. Hunter had been anxious with Jamie’s health.
“And, the other test?” I said, hoping that he’d have something.
“Other test?” Jamie asked, her eyebrows furrowed, her lips drawn tight.
“I had asked him to run a DNA test to find out more about you,” I said apprehensively, hoping she would take it alright. She nodded. Okay, she seemed to be alright about it. “Well we know you’re at least half wolf and you have a wolf spirit, but I wanted to help you find more answers.”
“And, did you get the results in?” Jamie asked him pointedly, hope evident in her tone.
“I looked at the sample and known DNA from different shifters. The only shifter DNA I’m seeing is wolf, but that simply crosses out some of the other shifter species to narrow down your remaining lineage,” Dr. Michaels explained.
“Other shifters?” Jamie asked. For a wolf that was raised human, she was taking this all rather well.
“Yes, there are many shifting spirits. Wolves, dragons, vampires, fairies, demons…” Dr. Michaels explained, his voice trailing off a bit. Jamie’s eyes widened further, but she nodded her head, her mouth open a bit in shock. That mouth with those lips. I longed to kiss her again, but we would have to work our way there. At least now, there’s no more wolf secret between us.
“Do you know about your parents? If they were supernatural?” Dr. Michaels asked.
Jamie shook her head. “My mom was human, as far as I know. And… I never met my dad. My mom left him when she was pregnant with us and she never talked about him.”
I nodded, thoughts racing, trying to think of the next logical question. The mark. “Did your mom have a bite mark on her neck?”
She jumped at the accuracy of my remark jogging her memory. “Yes! She was attacked by an animal in the woods. She was always scared of me and Jillian going too far from home that we’d get attacked.”
I raised my eyebrows suspiciously. “Dr. Michaels, can you show her your mark?” I asked, looking at him expectantly. Werewolves who had found their mates would mark each other to link each others’ souls permanently. Dr. Michaels nodded his head and pulled down his shirt collar a bit exposing his mark that was on the left side of his neck where the neck and shoulders meet. “Did it look like this?”
Jamie’s mouth hung agape, eyes wide, head nodding wordlessly.
“That means that your dad was a wolf. If your mom wasn’t a shifter, she may not have been able to mark him back” I clarified, feeling comforted knowing we were already finding some answers.
Dr. Michaels had removed the IV from Jamie, and I mind linked Griffin to bring some clothes for Jamie.
With Jamie having a fresh set of clothes and officially being discharged, I officially led her out of the clinic and to the packhouse.
“So, are all of these people wolves?” She asked, amazed at the situation.
“Yes, some may be hybrids or a few select other supernaturals. Typically, if a man has a mate, she will move with him to the pack. However, if a shewolf finds her mate, she goes to her mate’s territory,” I answered, trying to answer all of her questions clearly. She nodded curtly, taking everything in. Again, I found myself amazed at well she was taking everything.
I explained the packhouse to her and that I and my family lived here. I mind linked my dad, Jonathan, to meet me in my office, leading the way for Jamie. As we continued up to the third floor of the packhouse to my office, Jamie kept looking around taking everything in. She seemed at awe of the structure, which intrigued me. She seemed to continuously find new ways to pique my interest.
As we entered my office, I took the seat behind my desk, but pulled a chair that is usually in front of my desk so it was next to me. I wanted Jamie close.
My dad walked in, taking the remaining seat in front of my desk, eyeing Jamie with interest.
My dad looked very similar to me. Of course, he was older by 25 years, but he still looked good for his age. He was fit, though past his prime. He had black straight hair, although he was now sporting a bit of a salt and pepper look, which was combed back and to the side. Though he was no longer Alpha, he still wore a suit. He explained it to me once that he was more comfortable in a suit as it reinforced the authority that his Alpha status offered. His eyes were grey like mine, though darker, more like a charcoal gray. His straight facial features created a strong image and a subtle stubble across his face.
“What can I do for you, son?” he started, glancing to Jamie and back to me.
“I have news and need some help with something…” my voice trailed off towards the end. I cleared my throat, regaining my confidence. “I’ve found my mate. This is Jamie.” I continued.
My dad looked shocked, though he must have had a suspicion seeing her here next to me. “Hello, Jamie,” he said politely, reaching out a hand to shake, which she took with mild hesitation. He looked back at me continuing, “What do you need help with?”
“I thought she was human when I met her. Apparently, she is at least half wolf. Dr. Michaels is running a DNA test to verify, but I think there’s going to be another way we can help.”
“Oh?” Dad responded, raising his eyebrows in anticipation.
“Dr. Michaels believes that her wolf was suppressed when we first met and thought it might be a spell. We need a light witch,” I said, hoping my dad could feel how important this was to me.
He nodded at my request, but his words were anything but agreeable to my request. “Son, you know as well as I do that witches and wolves are mortal enemies. We should contact the elders to see if they have a light witch that they trust to help with this task.”
I pursed my lips at the response. I had hoped my dad had someone to contact rather than going through the elders. He sensed the conversation was over and stood to leave, mindlinking me in the process.
Depending on how this witch situation goes, will that depend on whether or not you reject her? You know certain species can’t run a pack. Even in mind link, I could sense his disappointment.
I responded back to him, trying to hide my aggravation with his insinuation. No Dad, her heritage is irrelevant to me. I just want to help her find the answers she needs. In regards to accepting her, I already have.
Now that Dad knew, I would have to tell Mom before she flipped about keeping a secret from her.
