Chapter 6

Aiden’s POV “I wanted to know if you would give me the honor of letting me take you on a date tomorrow night.” I looked at her expectantly, her face surprisingly hard to read. She seemed happy and excited, but perhaps was trying to keep her emotions in check. I waited patiently for her response. “A date sounds great. I’m off tomorrow night.” “Great! I will plan all the details. I’ll pick you up, if that’s ok?” I was so excited that she said yes. Her face dropped slightly at the mention of me picking her up. Did she not want me to know where she lived? “How about you pick me up here? I can have my sister drop me off.” Interesting. Maybe she was concerned about the safety of her family. Mate is protective of family. Mate needs our protection too. Hunter said. Hunter was persistently active in my head when Jamie was near, which made it hard to think sometimes. Having no wolf, Jamie was going to be both my and Hunter’s mate. The pheromones coming from Jamie were comforting to both of us. “If that makes you more comfortable, that works for me. I would love to surprise you with the destination.” I said casually with a smile. I had been researching date ideas and had a few good options planned. “Text me with details for the time. I should be free after five. Were you here for just that, or did you want to place an order?” Jamie asked, still smiling. I looked over her shoulder and saw what looked like her boss giving her a look. She must have felt his stare on her back and shifted back into work mode. “Yeah, what do you recommend?” She looked thoughtful for a moment before suggesting a Steak and Cheese sandwich with a side of fries. “That sounds great. Can we also get a side of mozzarella sticks to share?” Upon hearing us ordering, her manager seemed to back away slightly, but still looked annoyed. Cameron, who had been silently taking in the exchange, also placed his order. “Double burger with cheesy fries please.” “And to drink?” I got a peach iced tea while Cameron stuck to water. “I’ll put that all in for you and be back with your food, thanks guys!” As Jamie was walking away, Cameron mind linked me. Sweet, she does have a sister! Dude, shut up! I chuckled and shoved him playfully. Jamie’s POV Walking away from Aiden and his friend, who’s name I still hadn’t caught, I saw Devin looking at me disapprovingly. I made my way to the kitchen to drop off their order and fill their drinks. Devin approached me before I could get the drinks to Aiden’s table. “Fraternizing with customers now? Not exactly employee of the month kind of behavior,” he stated sharply. Devin was definitely on my case more now that I had asked for a raise. Real f*****g mature. “I’m just trying to be friendly with my customers,” I said sweetly, pretending to be oblivious to the rude tone he was using. “They just placed an order, so let me get their drinks to them. Excuse me.” Devin was standing in the doorway, and he shuffled a bit to the side to let me pass. I brought Aiden and his friend their drinks and started making my rounds. When I had a breather, I texted Jillian about Friday. Me: Got a date for Friday! Guy came back in and asked me out. It almost made up for him not texting me all day. Jillian: Sounds good! He’s picking you up here? Me: I don’t want him to come to the house yet. First date and all. I trust him, but I just want to make sure I keep you and Bella safe. Can you drop me off at the Diner tomorrow night? I didn’t want to leave you guys stranded without a car incase you wanted to go somewhere with baby girl. Jillian: Of course, I got you girl! Make sure you shave! I rolled my eyes at that comment. It wasn’t going to go that far, but of course I still wanted to look and feel good. Before Devin could catch me and have something else to yell at me for, I headed back into the dining area just as Aiden’s food was ready. I promptly delivered the food and wondered what Aiden had planned. He seemed like the kind of guy who would think the entire night through making detailed plans. I got excited thinking about the date. To be honest, the thought of Aiden excited me too. His smell, the smell of rain, was very comforting to me. Growing up, I was very outdoorsy. I would often sit on the porch watching the rain fall. Even after mom died, there was a lot of thinking to do. I frequently sat outside any time it rained, as the rain washed away the grief I was feeling from missing my mom. Once Aiden finished his meal, he asked for my opinion on dessert. I suggested the chocolate cake, which we garnish with a raspberry. “You’re only suggesting that because the raspberry reminds you of his smell too,” my inner voice said. I laughed at the thought. Yep. The guy also reminds me of raspberries. I’ve had this inner voice for a while now. It’s like I can almost hear another voice in my head. It’s quiet but has gotten more frequent since I met Aiden. As usual, Aiden happily took my suggestion while he ordered a cheesecake for his friend, Cameron. So that’s his name. I brought the guys their desserts and made my rounds. Once Aiden and Cameron left, the night went pretty smoothly. However, after testing Devin’s theory, my tips were about the same whether I had another button down or not. That small victory made me feel warm inside. But not as warm as the thought of Aiden made me. When I got home, I showered and drifted off to sleep quickly, dreaming about Aiden and his grey eyes.
