The Man Who Ruined Us
The first time I saw Lucien Blackwood in person, I realized something terrifying.
The man who destroyed my family didn’t look like a villain.
He looked like a calm and Untouchable man.
Power wrapped around him like a second skin as he stepped out of the black car, tailored suit flawless, expression unreadable. Cameras flashed. People whispered his name like a prayer. He was called Billionaire. Genius. Savior of failing companies.
No one whispered liar.
No one whispered thief.
My fingers tightened around the brown envelope pressed against my chest. Inside it were copies, printed documents my father had died trying to protect. Financial trails. Shell companies. Proof that Lucien Blackwood had quietly swallowed Cole Industries, bled it dry, and walked away while my family burned.
And now he stood ten feet away from me, accepting applause.
My heart didn’t race.
It ached, remembering my father's warmth smile.
I didn’t come here for justice.
I came here for answers.
“Miss, this area is restricted.”
I barely registered the security guard’s voice. My eyes stayed locked on Lucien as he turned slightly, speaking to someone beside him. His voice was low, controlled. A man used to being obeyed.
This was the man my father trusted.
The man who promised partnership and delivered ruin.
The man who left us bankrupt, disgraced and left my father with nothing but shame and a failing heart.
I stepped forward.
“I need to speak to Lucien Blackwood.”
The guard laughed. “Join the line.”
“I’m not asking,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. “Tell him Amara Cole is here.”
That did it.
The name hit like a bullet.
Lucien’s head snapped up.
For the first time, his calm cracked.
Our eyes met across the room and something dark flickered in his gaze.It was Recognition,Calculation and Control snapping instantly back into place.
He excused himself from the conversation and walked toward me, every step deliberate. People parted for him without realizing they were doing it.
When he stopped in front of me, the air felt heavier.
“Amara Cole,” he said smoothly. “I was wondering how long it would take you.”
So he knew.
Anger flared hot in my chest. “You destroyed my family.”
His expression didn’t change. “That’s a dramatic way to describe a failed company.”
“Don’t,” I snapped. “You lied to my father. You stole everything he built.”
Lucien’s gaze dropped to the envelope in my hands.
And hardened.
“You shouldn’t be carrying things you don’t understand,” he said quietly.
I lifted my chin. “I understand enough.”
Silence stretched between us, thick and dangerous. Then he leaned in, his voice dropping so only I could hear.
“You have no idea who you’re threatening.”
I let out a sharp, broken and fearless laughter.
“Neither did my father,” I said. “And look what that cost him.”
Something shifted in his eyes.
It wasn't guilt,it looked more like fear.
Lucien straightened and signaled to his security. “Clear the room.”
“What?” I demanded.
He ignored me.
Within seconds, the noise faded. The crowd dispersed. Suddenly, it was just us—me, the man who ruined my life, and the truth sitting between us like a loaded gun.
Lucien looked at the envelope again.
Then at me.
“You want answers,” he said. “I want silence.”
My stomach twisted.
“There’s a way,” he continued calmly. “One that benefits us both.”
“I’m not interested in your deals,” I said.
His lips curved not in a smile, but something colder.
“You don’t have a choice.”
He stepped closer, towering over me.
“You’re coming with me,” Lucien Blackwood said. “And by the time you leave, Amara Cole… you’ll belong to my world.”
My breath hitched.
And I knew that walking away was no longer an option.
