CHAPTER 1
Jason Black wood hated wasting time.
He'd been sitting in Damian Carter's office for what felt like forever, listening to numbers that no longer mattered. Partnerships, distribution, profits. His mind wasn't on any of it. Then the door opened. Neither man looked up immediately.
“ Damien , I told you I'd bring the-”. The voice stopped.
Jason's head snapped towards the door. And everything inside him went still. A young woman stood in the doorway, a folder pressed to her chest. She looked from Damian to Jason and frowned slightly. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you were still in a meeting.”
Her voice normal. No fear, No recognition .
No idea on what just had happened. Jason couldn't breathe. His wolf whispered one word.
“MATE”. He froze . The search , the endless dead ends, the years of silence and now this. A human standing in Damien Carter's office .
Damien stood too. His expression hardened as he looked from Jason to his sister.
“Elena”. She walked toward him. Jason watched every step. Damien looked at him, the understanding dawning. His sister was human and Jason Blackwood, The Alpha King and the Alpha of the Silvercrest had just found his mate.
But Damien also knew something else . Something Jason didn't realize yet. Whatever this bond was, Elena could never find out about the werewolf world now. Damien’s words hung heavily in the room. Jason just stared at Elena, his mate. After years of searching, after countless dead ends and nights when he’d begun to wonder if the Moon Goddess had simply forgotten him. She was standing right in front of him. And she was human.
Elena stopped beside Damien's desk ,and glanced between the two men. “Why are you both looking at me like that?”.
“You interrupted a meeting”, Damien said, recovering.
Elena frowned . “I said I was sorry”.
Jason said nothing. His wolf was restless inside him, demanding that he claim the bond, that he get closer. But Jason knew better. Not here. Not in front of Damian. And definitely not when Elena knew nothing about who he really was.
Damien cleared his throat “ Elena ,this is Jason Blackwood “. She looked at Jason and for the first time their eyes met properly . Something inside Jason tightened .
Elena smiled politely , “Nice to meet you” .
“Likewise” , Jason forced himself to answer.Damien’s eyes narrowed . He knew that was a lie . Jason have never been pleased to meet anyone.
Elena, however, didn’t seem to notice. She placed the folder on Damian’s desk and glanced at her brother.
“I just came to drop these off. You said you needed them before lunch.”
“I did,” Damian replied.
Jason forced himself to look away from her, though it was harder than it should have been. Every part of him seemed painfully aware of her—the scent of her, the rhythm of her heartbeat, even the small movements of her hands as she adjusted the folder.
Damian picked up the folder, but his attention remained fixed on Jason.
“You can go,” he said quietly.
Jason’s eyes flickered toward him.
The silence after the door clicked shut behind Elena was suffocating.
The lingering scent of her—sweet, warm, like rain on fresh cedar—hung in the air, driving Jason’s wolf into a frenzy. It took every ounce of his Alpha control to stay seated, his knuckles turning white where his hands gripped the leather armrests of his chair.
Damian didn't waste a second. The moment his sister was out of earshot, he rounded his desk, his jaw set in a hard, protective line.
"No."
Jason slowly raised his gaze. His dark eyes locked onto Damian, the golden rim of his Alpha eyes flaring briefly before he forced the inner beast back down. "You don't get to tell me no, Carter."
"I just did," Damian snapped, leaning across the desk, lowering his voice into a sharp whisper. "She’s human, Jason. Completely human. She doesn't know about packs, she doesn't know about Alphas, and she certainly doesn't know that shape-shifting wolves exist. I have spent her entire life keeping her safe from our world. I am not going to let you drag her into it."
"She is my mate," Jason growled, the word rumbling deep in his chest. The force of his command vibrated through the room, heavy and suffocating. Any normal wolf would have dropped to their knees, but Damian was a Beta from a strong line. He held his ground, though his breathing hitched under the sheer weight of Jason's aura.
"She doesn't even know what that word means!" Damian shot back. "What are you going to do, Blackwood? Corner her in the hallway and tell her she's destined to be the Queen of Silvercrest? She’ll think you're insane. She’ll call security!"
Jason stood up smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit jacket. His expression smoothed over into a mask of cold, unyielding calculation. Damian was right about one thing: brute force and supernatural claims wouldn't work here. Elena lived in a world of logic, routines, and human rules.
If he wanted her, he had to play by her rules. For now.
"I won't tell her," Jason said, his voice deadly calm.
Damian blinked, caught off guard. "What?"
"I won't tell her about the pack. Not yet," Jason clarified, taking a deliberate step toward the window overlooking the city skyline. "But make no mistake, Carter. She is mine. The Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes, and I have waited too long for her. I am not walking away."
"Jason—"
"We were discussing the merger," Jason interrupted, turning back around with an unreadable look in his eyes. "Silvercrest Enterprises acquiring thirty percent of Carter Holdings."
Damian narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "That deal was dead ten minutes ago. You said our distribution logistics were sloppy."
"My terms have changed," Jason said, stepping back toward the desk and picking up his pen. "I’ll approve the acquisition today. On one condition."
Damian crossed his arms, his posture defensive. "I'm listening."
"I want a liaison assigned to oversee the integration between our two companies. Someone from your side who will work directly out of my head office in the city three days a week." Jason locked eyes with Damian, a faint, dangerous smirk touching the corner of his lips. "Assign Elena."
Damian let out a harsh laugh. "Are you insane? She’s an assistant manager in marketing! She’s not qualified to run a multi-million-dollar merger integration!"
"Then promote her," Jason replied without skipping a beat. "Give her a team. Give her whatever title makes it look legitimate. But if you want this deal—if you want Silvercrest’s capital to save your failing logistics branch—she comes with it."
"You're trapping her."
"I'm giving her a career opportunity," Jason corrected, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying tone that made entire packs submit. "And I am giving you a choice. You can let her work in my building under my protection, where I can win her over like a normal man... or I can simply take what is mine, and you can explain to her why her life just got turned upside down."
Damian’s jaw worked silently as he weighed the options. He knew Jason Blackwood’s reputation. The man was ruthless, unyielding, and used to getting whatever he wanted. The fact that Jason was offering a compromise at all was a miracle born entirely out of his desire not to frighten Elena.
"If you touch her," Damian warned, his eyes flashing amber, "if you scare her or put her in danger, I don't care that you're an Alpha King. I will tear this contract to shreds."
"Fair enough," Jason said calmly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his signet ring, and set it on the glass desk before picking up the contract papers. "Draft the new terms. She starts Monday."
Out in the main hallway,
Elena was leaning against the breakroom counter, stirring a fresh cup of coffee and trying to shake off the strange feeling that had taken root in her chest.
Ever since she stepped into Damian’s office, her skin had felt like it was buzzing with static electricity. And that man—Jason Blackwood.
She had seen powerful executives before. Carter Holdings dealt with high-profile clients every week. But there was something unnerving about Blackwood. The way he had stared at her... as if he knew every secret she had ever kept. As if he owned the very air she was breathing.
Get a grip, Elena, she thought, shaking her head and taking a sip of her coffee. He’s just a wealthy client.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from Damian:
Damian: Need to see you in my office. Now. Bring your resume.
Elena frowned at the screen. My resume?
Setting her coffee down, she smoothed her pencil skirt, straightened her blouse, and walked back down the quiet corporate hallway, completely unaware that her quiet, predictable life had just come to an end.
