Chapter 5: A Fae's guide to Modern Life

The first artifact Kael mentioned wasn’t anywhere nearby—it was in a location that required “a great deal of research,” as he put it, which meant he wasn’t rushing out of her life anytime soon. That left Ivy with an awkward reality: she was stuck with him. To survive, they needed ground rules. By mid-afternoon, Ivy sat at her small dining table, scribbling on a notepad while Kael sprawled on the couch, flipping through channels with a mixture of fascination and disdain. “Why are these people shouting so much?” he asked, pointing at a soap opera where two characters were dramatically arguing in a rainstorm. “Because drama sells,” Ivy muttered, not looking up. “Ah.” Kael smirked. “So it’s not so different from the fae court, then.” Ivy ignored him and held up her notepad. “Alright, here’s the deal. Rule one: don’t use magic in public. I don’t need the FBI or whatever hunting us down.” “FBI?” Kael echoed, amused. “Are they powerful sorcerers?” “They’re… just don’t ask. Rule two: no touching my stuff without asking. That includes the kitchen.” Kael placed a hand over his heart in mock offense. “I was only trying to be helpful.” “And almost burned the place down,” Ivy shot back. “Rule three: no flirting with my neighbors. Mrs. Gilmore in 2B already gives me side-eye every time we cross paths.” Kael chuckled, his voice dripping with charm. “I can’t help it if mortals find me irresistible.” Ivy rolled her eyes. “And rule four: if you’re going to stay here, you need to help with groceries.” He raised an eyebrow. “Groceries?” “You know—food, supplies. Things humans need to survive.” She paused, glancing at him skeptically. “Unless fae live off ego and smugness?” Kael grinned, clearly enjoying her sarcasm. “No, but your mortal food is… intriguing. I accept your terms, Ivy Blake. In return, I’ll ensure no harm comes to you while we search for the artifacts.” She snorted. “Great. My life is now a buddy comedy starring me and a fae prince. This is *exactly* what I needed.” Kael leaned back, his smirk deepening. “Trust me, Ivy, the adventure’s just getting started.”
