Chapter 1

“Are you sure about this?” Alejandro asked Elissa.

Alejandro thought that they were living a simple and happy marriage, but why did his wife want to divorce him? It all started yesterday. Elissa was so silent and not talking to him. Ever since he went home yesterday, his wife has been giving him silent treatment. He tried to ask her why, but the woman refused to answer him.

Elissa did not answer him, the woman remained stoic. But deep inside she was hurting. She was broken by what she had seen yesterday. Alejandro had been very busy lately, and when she asked her husband what was keeping him busy, the man would always answer her that it was the harvest season, so he had to do overtime.

“Tell me what’s wrong? We could talk about it first,” Alejandro said.

Alejandro was a farmer. He worked at the largest farm in Cariaga Province. It was summer last year when Elissa went to Cariaga to have a vacation. They met at the beach, fell in love at first sight. They got married, and live in a simple house in Cariaga. Elissa thought everything was like a fairy tale, a happy marriage with the man she fell in love with, but she was wrong.

Yesterday, while buying the things they needed at the local market, she saw Alejandro. His husband was talking to a woman, and not a simple conversation. She hid while watching the two. Before the woman left, she kissed her husband on his cheeks, and she heard the two people exchanged 'I love you’s'. That broke Elissa’s heart. She thought she knew her husband, but no. Her husband was cheating on her with a rich woman.

“Just sign the damn papers, so I can go!”

Alejandro was surprised by Elissa’s attitude. But no one could blame her, she was heartbroken, and was just trying to get away with the man who broke her heart. Elissa’s mind was clouded with negative thoughts, she didn’t want to listen to Alejandro.

“Just give me a reason, one goddamn good reason for me to sign these papers,” Alejandro said.

Elissa swallowed a lump on her throat. She couldn’t tell the man what she saw, she couldn’t take it that she had been cheated on. She has pride, that’s what she thought.

“I hate living here anymore. I don’t want to die poor! You can’t give me the life I always dreamed of,” she lied.

It broke her heart more to tell those lies. The truth was, she didn’t care if they died poor, as long as they were together until their hair turned gray. She just wants to live a simple life with him, and it doesn’t matter if all they ate was fish and vegetables. Who wants beef anyway?

“Elissa…” Alejandro called her name weakly.

The man was surprised by the words she said. He never thought about her being a greedy woman, as someone who likes fancy things. All this time he thought of her as a simple woman who appreciates every little and simple thing.

“Alright…”

Alejandro picked up the pen, and signed the papers. Tears were falling from his eyes while he was doing that. He always believed that Elissa would be the last woman he would ever love, and he would spend the rest of his life, but he was wrong. She doesn’t deserve him, not now, and not ever. Hate started to build in his heart. If their paths ever crossed again, he would make sure that he no longer loved the woman. And even if she kneels down, he wouldn’t forgive her.

Elissa left the town after processing their divorce. She left with a broken heart, and a promise to herself that if she would love again, it would be someone loyal and faithful. Not a man who would cheat on her back, not a man like Alejandro.

Five years later…

”Bye-bye, my!” The cute little girl waved her hands to Elissa.

Elissa works at a convenience store. She always left her daughter to her friend named Alena. Alena was her neighbor, they became friends when Elissa moved to an apartment in the city.

Alena was a housewife, she helped Elissa all those years, and they became best friends. Every time Elissa went to work she would leave her daughter with Alena.

Five years ago, after leaving Cariaga, Elissa wasn’t aware that she was a month pregnant with her baby. But she had just gotten divorced with Alejandro at that time. It was tough. She was jobless and pregnant at that time.

“Bye, baby, be a good girl, hmm?” Elissa reminded Katarina.

Her daughter, Katarina, nodded her head like a good girl to her mother.

After Elissa left Katarina for Alena, she head straight to the convenience store where she was working. Her salary was just enough for the two of them, but something worried her. She had to save up for Katarina’s future. She wanted to make sure that Katarina would be able to finish her studies.

She doesn’t want her daughter to have the same fate as her. She wants her to succeed in life. Being poor was hard, and she didn’t want Katarina to be poor all her life.

On the other hand, Alejandro went back to where he really belonged when Elissa left him. He was the successor of the richest man in Cariaga. They owned the land where Alejandro used to work. He wanted to work from the bottom for him to understand the business well. That was when he met Elissa, he did not tell the woman the truth about his identity, as he believed that when the woman stayed with him, she deserved all his riches. But in the end, the woman left him.

“Stop playing with women's hearts, Ale. Not all women are like your ex-wife,” Santina said.

Santina was Alejandro’s younger sister.

Alejandro just ignored Santina. Ever since Elissa left him, he has treated every woman as his toy. Date them for fun, and dispose of them if they no longer entertain him.

“I already posted an ad to find you a secretary. I can’t help you anymore, I’m studying abroad,” Santina informed Alejandro.

The two of them manage the farm and their family business. Santina used to help him, but she wanted to pursue fashion designing, and she wanted to study abroad. Alejandro was fine with that, he supports whatever she wanted to do in life.

“Alright,” he simply responded.

Elissa was on her way home, riding on the bus. She was scrolling through her phone when she came across a job offering ad. She read the ads, and what caught her attention was its salary. That was so huge! She immediately wanted to send a resume, but suddenly stopped when she noticed where the job was located.
