She quickly snatched it up not wanting to lose it down the crevasse to nowhere. Her heart was beating quickly, excited with a moment of hope rushing through her. She sat on her hand and turned to make sure nobody was around. Once she was certain she took a chance to get a good look at her great fortune.
The blade looked sturdy but small. It had a black handle with some rivets holding the blade in place. She sat back and thought of the best way to use it, break the chain, maybe the lock around her neck. She couldn’t cut herself, it would attract too many things. Of course the noise from hammering at the chain could lure unwanted guests as well.
She looked down at the knife and she picked her chain up. There was going to be a weakness in the chain, one she could pry apart. Link by link she felt with her fingers, the light was so dim down here there would be no way to see it. She studied each link finding the welding sights and delicately touching them, looking for any sign of weakness.
She slowed her heartbeat and opened her ears to be sure to be paying attention to her surroundings. Doing her best not to get frustrated, to stay in the here and now. Link 1, link 2, link 3…….slowly.
Just at that moment she heard his voice. ‘Adella please’ and along with his voice she felt such sorrow and love it was almost overwhelming. She had never heard him in her head before. It made her stop and then she slowly looked around again and went back to work finding the weakest link in the only thing keeping her away from him.
Baron
Baron was working all day in the fields, harvesting the long grass for the winter months. The sun was hot and he stood there shirtless and tan along with 5 other men. It was time for a break and they went to take a dip in the nearby creek. A couple of the guys picked up some sticks and started jousting back and forth and it was obvious to Baron that they knew nothing about fighting. He stood up and started giving them some pointers and then the others joined in.
“Maybe we really need to train. I mean we should be able to defend ourselves.”” Baron knew they had been lucky where they were. The other men agreed with him.
“We shall start tomorrow at dawn. Now we get back to work. Winter waits for no man.”
After dinner and everything was quiet Baron found him looking at the colt again. He was a curious one and he was drawn to Baron. He slowly approached and Baron just left his hand on the fence post and let him approach. It was a funny moment, with his ears flickering, licking his lips and his tail swishing back and forth like he wasn’t sure but couldn’t stop himself from reaching out and touching his hand on the fence. He pulled his nose away and jolted around prancing a bit. Baron smiled at him but still did not move.
The colt came back again but not so anxious this time around, he took a moment to smell him and let his tongue come out and lick him, then again jolting away.
Baron stood there for a while just letting the colt trust him a bit. He moved so nice already, he was going to be a formidable ally someday. Finally the colt just stood next to him and Baron was able to reach out and touch him, the colt stood still for a moment and then was off to find his mother with a whiney.
He supposed it was time for him to go to bed too. Dawn would come sooner than he wanted it to.
‘I feel something different in the bond. I think we reached her.’ Sortas said even though he knew speaking of her was against their agreement.
Baron was instantly angry that he had thought of her. He didn’t deserve her, deserves to even think of her. Baron shut the link off.
He shook off the anger as he reached his door. He was going in to be with Adella. He missed her greatly today. On the outside he might look fine but he was always struggling on the inside. He picked up his little bag of hair and pulled it out. It was more like a wad now, as he found them he put them here. He rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger enjoying its silky touch. It had lost its scent long ago but it was still her. The only proof that she had been there. Tears swelled in his eyes as he remembered how beautiful she was to him. Her gentle smile, the sway of her hips. Sometimes he fought the tears back but today he couldn’t.
He went to their bed and lay in it. He hardly ever did that because he needed what was left of her scent in times like these. The tears began falling and he just couldn’t stop them for some reason. Maybe it was because Sortas had said something about her, maybe it was because deep down he wished he heard back from her through the bond. He began to realize that she was gone forever, she never wanted to come back. Eventually he fell asleep holding her pillow.
Adella
Link by link Adella searched reminding herself to be slow and then there it was. A tiny little c***k with welding, just big enough she hoped. She pinched the link between her fingers and slowly ran the knife into the c***k.
She stopped and closed her eyes Praying for a miracle. Then with the most precision she could have just using her fingers she slid the knife into the c***k and she felt it catch. As one unit her hands worked together to guide the link and knife onto the rocks. She felt it lock into place and with one quick motion the link broke in half.
She quickly grabbed the end that locked into the rock so it wouldn’t make too much noise. Her heart was beating in her throat as she looked around and then without hesitation she shot upwards toward the ocean as fast as her tail could possibly push her. As soon as she reached the ocean floor she continued straight up, letting water out of her lungs to adjust for decreased water pressure. She wasn’t going to look back, it would be too dangerous. She could see light above and her heart almost stopped she was so excited.
As soon as she was in the middle of the ocean she stopped and turned this way and that way until she knew which way to go. She had no idea how long it was going to take her to get there but she was never going to stop until she did.
She swam fast and steady towards him, towards home. She wondered what she was going to say. She wondered if he was angry with her, it certainly did not feel that way to her.
She was close enough to the surface that she could see the sun go down and come back up and then go down again. It was on the third night she began to sense she knew where she was. She entered the small inlet and was sure of where she was. Her body was so malnourished but she was running on adrenaline and love. She pulled herself up on the rocks and rested there, she wasn’t safe yet but she felt a lot better as her fin faded away being out of the water.
She tried to get up on her feet and they were definitely weak but she forced herself up and make her way to the sand beach. She held her hand over her baby as she stood looking up the cliff and she was suddenly overwhelmed by fatigue and dropped to her knees unable to move any further.
“Baron” she screamed out “Please, Baron.” She suddenly needed him so badly, cries caught in her dry throat as she reached for him but could not move any further. “Baron.” She cried to herself in a whisper “Please hear me.”
