Chapter 4: Sparks in the Darkness The next morning, Misty awoke restless, her dreams tangled in the sound of the howl. It had burrowed itself deep in her chest, making it hard to breathe. The wolf that had called out—he was powerful, unlike any she’d sensed since leaving her family. And yet, she couldn’t stop thinking about Sutton. He was irritating. Overconfident. Dominant in a way that should have repelled her completely. And sometimes, it did. But then there were moments—flashes of something else in his eyes. Something almost… tender. She hated that part of her liked it. Later that day, as she walked across campus, the wind picked up. A rich, woodsy scent drifted through the air—cologne and pine. Her pulse quickened before she even saw him. “Misty,” Sutton called, emerging from a group of students. He was dressed casually in a leather jacket and jeans, his dark hair wind-tousled, lips curved in that confident smirk she was starting to recognize all too well. She swallowed. “Hey.” “You disappeared last night. Everything okay?” “I just needed air,” she said. “The fire got overwhelming.” He stepped closer, the distance between them shrinking. “You seemed jumpy. Something happen?” “No,” she lied. He nodded, searching her face. “I know I come on strong. It’s a pack thing. But I don’t mean to push.” That surprised her. “I just don’t get you,” he added, voice softer now. “You’re not like other wolves here. There’s… depth. Secrets.” “You don’t know me,” she replied quickly, heart racing. “Not yet,” he said, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. “But I want to.” A thrill ran through her. It was stupid. She knew better. But for a moment, she saw something sincere in his gaze—like maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t all arrogance and dominance. That night, she told Jaz and Ally what had happened. “Girl, no,” Jaz groaned. “Sutton? Really? He’s got a new she-wolf every week.” “Yeah,” Ally chimed in, “and don’t forget the Alicia situation. She basically staked her claim.” Misty bit her lip. “I’m not saying I like him. I just think… there might be more to him.” Tamara rolled her eyes. “There’s nothing under that pretty exterior but trouble. Don’t be fooled.” But Misty couldn’t forget the way he looked at her today. Like he saw her. And that scared her even more than the howl.
