The Rejection
The full moon hung heavy over the Silver Moon Pack territory, bathing the clearing in cold silver light.
I stood in the center of the circle, heart hammering so hard I was sure everyone could hear it. Tonight was supposed to be the best night of my life. My eighteenth birthday. The night the mate bond would finally snap into place and the future Alpha would claim me in front of the entire pack.
Asher Blackwood stood only a few steps away. Tall. Powerful. Beautiful in the way only an Alpha could be. His dark hair caught the moonlight, and those golden eyes that had always made my stomach flip were fixed on me.
I had loved him in secret for years.
The pack was silent. Waiting.
Asher’s voice rang out clear and strong.
“I, Asher Blackwood, future Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack…”
My breath caught. This was it.
“…reject you, Luna Hayes, as my mate.”
The world stopped.
For a second I thought I had misheard him. Then the bond—the warm, glowing thread that had just begun to form between us—shattered like glass. Pain exploded in my chest so sharp I staggered forward, gasping.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Asher’s face remained cold. Distant. Like I was nothing more than a stranger.
“I choose Selene Hayes as my future Luna.”
My older sister stepped forward, a perfect smile on her perfect face. She didn’t even glance at me as she took her place beside him. The pack erupted in cheers.
I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. The rejection burned through every nerve, leaving me hollow.
Alpha Blackwood—Asher’s father—raised a hand for silence. “The mate bond has spoken. Selene will be our future Luna. Luna Hayes…” His eyes flicked to me with something like pity. “You are free to leave if you wish.”
Free.
I was free to fall apart in front of everyone who had just watched my heart get ripped out.
Selene’s voice was soft, almost sweet. “I’m sorry, little sister. But some of us are simply meant for more.”
Asher still wouldn’t look at me.
Something inside me cracked, then hardened.
I lifted my chin, even though tears blurred my vision. My voice came out steady, colder than I expected.
“I accept your rejection, Asher Blackwood.”
The words tasted like blood and ash.
Without another glance at any of them—not my sister, not the Alpha, not the boy I had once dreamed of—I turned and walked out of the circle.
Behind me, the celebration continued.
I didn’t stop walking until the lights of the pack house disappeared between the trees. Only then did I let the first sob tear free.
Three years.
I would give myself three years.
And when I came back…
I would no longer be the girl they could discard so easily.
