Bob Davenport was in the briefing room, marking the location of abandoned homesteads on the map they’d mounted on the wall, when his mobile phone rang. He didn’t recognise the number. ‘Sergeant Davenport.’ ‘Are you that policeman in Burra?’ Bob didn’t recognise the voice. ‘Yes. Who am I speaking to?’ ‘Oh, sorry. Jim Paterson. Got your number from the bloke at the Terowie roadhouse. I manage White Stones Station.’ ‘Where’s that?’ said Bob. ‘About thirty kilometres east of here, off Deep Creek Road.’ Bob located Terowie on his map and traced his finger along Deep Creek Road. ‘Is that anywhere near Waterdown Station, Jim? ‘That’s why I’m calling,’ said Jim. ‘Heard you blokes on the radio this morning. Look, it might be nothing, but I reckon someone’s driven up the drive into Waterdown
