By noon on Tuesday, the body in the grave at Waterdown Station had been exhumed and identified as Paul Maitland. The pathologist gave the probable cause of death as asphyxiation due to hanging, subject to a full post mortem examination. It was fairly obvious to Pat that John Grant had buried Paul’s body, since he was the only other person at Waterdown Station at the time. The question Pat needed an answer to was whether Paul had hung himself or been killed with a rope. He would have to wait until John Grant was deemed well enough to be interviewed, following surgery to his shoulder, to ask his questions. But at least he’d survived, and it looked like he’d live to face trial. Pat packed his bag and went to find Lina. He was looking forward to going home and catching up with his daughter,
