Tegan POV Lunch seemed like forever. I didn’t eat. I couldn’t eat. My nerves were kicking. I’m not certain why I’m so nervous. I’m guessing it’s because this will be the first real conversation I’ve held with Devyn. Come to think of it, I don’t know that I’ve ever said a word to her. I’ve heard her amazing voice but I’m not certain that she’s ever heard mine. I go to the restroom to do my business and to look in the mirror once more. Today I wore my best suit. I look very professional. All I must do is explain the details of trying to save Saliana and her baby. Finally! I find my place at the stand. I’m given instructions by Elder Bevis. I’ll be questioned first by Devyn and then by Attorney Nellows. To be honest, my attorney hasn’t questioned anyone. He believes the case is a farce and that there isn’t a need to drag out the case. I believe he is useless. Devyn approaches me. I watch her every move. She is so beautiful. I’m surprised that she didn’t dress more elegant today, but it played well with the roommate of Saliana. I see why she is the star in the legal realm. Devyn eyed me. I can see the longing. Or maybe it’s something sinister. She begins, “Dr. Moss, can you begin by telling me about your qualifications as a doctor.” “Of course.” I begin explaining all the details of my education and work experience. I noticed when I began, she closed her eyes for a minute. She also bit her lower lip. I knew right then that my voice had the same effect on her as hers had on me. I kept talking making sure that I highlighted all the important training and accomplishments. Devyn, “During your career, how many patients have died in your care?” “Too many. The total number is seventeen. Most occurred when I was a resident in the emergency room. Nine were due to automobile accidents, three were on the operating table and were unlikely to survive, four died to complications after surgery from unrelated issues, Ms. Garnets died from an overdose.” I finished. Devyn, “That totals fifteen. What about the other two?” I take a deep breath realizing that my math was off. I had hoped not to have to explain the other two that I take responsibility. “The other two. Happened before medical school.” I see the wheels turning, she’s not going to drop this. “It was my parents. We were heading home from a party. There was a wreck. I was in the car and the only survivor. Both died with me trying to save them.” Devyn brings her hand up to her mouth and I see tears forming. She says, “I’m so sorry to bring up those painful memories.” She then takes a moment. During this moment, I see a diamond on her left hand. My blood starts boiling. Is she engaged? My mournful mood suddenly turns into rage. “I’m sure you don’t know as much as you think, Mssss. Holland.” This takes her by surprise, and she strikes back. Devyn, “I’m not the one on trial now, am I?” Oh wow, that glare is scary. “How often do you frequent the strip club?” “Not often.” I can play this game too. I’ll only answer her questions. Direct and straight to the point. Devyn, “Care to elaborate?” “Once or twice a month to meet with buddy’s” She stops for a moment. Devyn, “Did you know Saliana Garnet’s prior to her death?” Fuck! She went there right away. “Yes.” Devyn, “Dr. Moss, did you murder Saliana?” I’m taken by surprise. Really? She thinks I murdered Saliana! “Absolutely NOT! I tried to save her!” Devyn, “We’ve all read the reports. I want more. Why the baby and not her?” I close my eyes, “I tried to save her, but the drugs were going to take her and the baby. I wasn’t sure the baby would survive. I thought I would lose them both.” Devyn, “Why didn’t you use Narcan?” She said this and I could tell that she had researched the reversal process of the drug Narcan. “Narcan was the only possibility of saving her. However, it has properties in it that doesn’t work well with werewolves. This causes a she-wolf to miscarry if used.” I hear gasps from the observers. Devyn, “So you did choose the baby?” “Ms. Garnets plead with me to save the baby!” Devyn, “Did you leave this part out of your report? Nowhere in the report does it say she spoke.” Frustrated, “She didn’t speak. She couldn’t speak.” Devyn, “Then how did she plead for you to save the baby?” “Her eyes told me.” There are more gasps and Devyn turns walking around the court. I can sense the wheels turning in her head. She’s smart. I messed up. Devyn, “How well did you know Saliana?” “I spoke with her at the club. She was smart. She had hopes for a future. I just know she would want the baby to live.” She c***s her eyebrow. The next words came out like a scorned woman, “You! It was you! You were sleeping with her!” FUCK! f**k! f**k! I’m so screwed. “We had s*x once. It was an accident.” Devyn, “ACCIDENT! How is it an accident that your d**k ends up in her p***y?” She screams this at me. I’m now getting pissed. “The same way a bartender’s d**k ends up in your p***y!” Oh, my goddess, did I really just go there? I feel the wrath coming and see her eyes flame with hatred. Devyn, “What the f**k did you just say?” Elder Bevis, “ORDER! THERE WILL BE ORDER!” We both turn to Elder Bevis apologizing. Elder Bevis, “ENOUGH of this! We’ll conclude for the day and get back to this s**t show tomorrow. I presume both of you can act accordingly tomorrow?” We both nodded and bowed to the Elder. I immediately got up walking right past Devyn. Our hands briefly grazed one another. I felt the sparks erode throughout my body. A deep primal growl escaped my mouth. Everyone in the room looked. Guards responded and soon had me pinned to the floor. I’m certain they thought I was going to attack Devyn. They have no idea that she is my mate. I would never hurt my mate no matter how mad I am. The growl was my wolf coming forward with so much hurt and pain. The sparks allowed him a moment to voice himself. Finally, after instructing me not to fight, I’m released. I hurry out of the court, jump in my car, and head home. My mind is a mess. Soon, my phone is ringing. I look to see it is Attorney Nellows. Answering I hear him bellow, “The case has now taken a turn, I think it’s time we fight back. I need to know everything.”
