OPENING STATEMENT

1670 Words
Tegan POV Two nights of tossing and turning. I can’t get Devyn out of my f*****g head. I don’t think she knows who I am. I should have turned around and claimed her as mine. I froze. I f*****g froze. How would my mate react? Would she accept me or reject me? I mean she the lead prosecutor in the case against me. This is not how I was supposed to meet my mate. What if she had discovered more to the case? Why? Why me? I just wanted to find my mate and live a peaceful life full of happiness. Now, we may or may not end up together. She’s so beautiful. The way our bodies fit together perfectly made my member start to erect itself. Goddess, this angel can cause my stomach to drop and all the blood run to my c**k. I close my eyes and fantasize about her leaning into my chest. Her skin was smooth and inviting. I recall her smell and skin against my lips. She had let out a small moan and all I wanted to do was claim her. Then it had clicked, the smell. My wolf recalled where we had smelled her. All I could see was red. The bartender? She had f****d the bartender! My beautiful mate had been so slutty to give herself to a bartender. How dare her! I shouldn’t be so mad considering I had slept with a stripper. My only defense was that I had known Saliana for quite some time and it was a one-time thing we both regretted. Plus, werewolves don’t usually get wasted drunk but we both somehow managed. Before I get madder at the situation, I decided to get in the shower. My clothes were already prepared. Today is the first day of court. I know Devyn will recognize me. Regardless, I want to look my best. I’d like to think she won’t be on her best offense because she won’t want to hurt me but knowing her record, she will pull out all possibilities. Devyn POV Today is it! I’ve convinced myself to put aside finding my mate and concentrate solely on prosecuting Dr. Tegan Moss. He must know more and he’s quite possibly the murderer.  I pull out my collard mini dress. The classy silhouette stands out with the high waisted skirt and nautical top. It almost resembles a two piece but is in fact a dress. It is form fitting with an invisible zipper on the side. I finish the look with navy Lucite pump. My hair is down and looking stylish. I have my makeup conservative but on point. I feel noticeably confident as I exit my room and make my way to breakfast. Ginger, “Dev, good luck today. I know you’ll be a knockout in the court. Maybe after you’ll run into your mate, and he won’t be able to resist this outfit. It’s smokin’ hot!” “You never know. However, today is all about figuring out a way to win the case.” Our party leaves the pack house. It’s not normal that the Alpha and Luna attend court cases until the last day but given the circumstances both Duran and Jori have decided to tag along. The ride is spent with others on my team going over details. Alamand will be attending today as my head investigator in case I need clarification. We pull up at the courts. I exit the car walking into the building and immediately smell my mate. Oh, for goddess sake, I can’t take this right now. Just the scent has me craving him. I look around trying to see who he could be. The scent looks like it is coming from a crowd entering the court room. This confirms that it must be one of the two I suspected. My heart drops thinking that I will certainly be rejected. Jori grabs my hand and turns me to face her, “Devyn, look at me. I know something besides the case is happening. I know it’s important. BUT! You have got to pull this off. The pack is counting on you. We fully support and have trust in your abilities. Please try to put aside whatever is causing your heart to increase. I can feel your anxiety.” I look at her shaking my head yes and reply, “Jori, I think my mate is in the court room.” Jori gasps, “Devyn! OH, my goddess! Pull from your mate. His strength will help you. I can’t wait to find out who it is!” She gives me a hug and pulls me towards the door. The guards are holding the door open for us and I sniff slightly confirming that it isn’t either of them. We walk in to about 25 individuals total in the room. I move quickly to my seat not really looking around. I want to. Oh, how I want to. I pull out my laptop and set up my desk ready for this to begin. A court clerk clears her throat, “Elder Bevis will be presiding. Please stand to welcome him to the bench.” We all stand and out walks Elder Bevis. The court and surroundings appear typical but again this could change if there are no humans present. I then hear the door lock behind me, and the guard notify Elder Bevis that no human is present. Elder Bevis, “Good, we can act like wolves. Now, here’s the groundwork. I don’t want to draw this out so get right to the point. Convince me quickly. First up, defense.” Attorney Nellows, “Elder, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent Dr. Tegan Moss and the Frostcrest Pack. As you know, the untimely death of Saliana Garnets was caused by an overdose. Sadly, this is common for individuals in her profession. Ms. Garnets was a stripper at a club known to entertain both on the dance floor and in the bedroom.” He continues, “Dr. Moss administered the protocol to save Ms. Garnets but when discovering that she was with pup, the decision was made. It was the only decision that could be made. Had he not saved the pup, we would have two of our fellow wolf’s dead. Now, the question is obvious: why not save Ms. Garnets? The simple answer was that the drugs had already affected her ability to breath and her wolf had already died. Ms. Garnets without a wolf would not have been able to heal. Dr. Moss is reputable. He is the best of the best. Even being brought into a lawsuit is a disgrace to him and to the Frostcrest Pack. I beg you to reconsider going forward and dismiss this case immediately.” Attorney Nellows then bows to Elder Bevis as a show of respect. Elder Bevis says, “I’ll reconsider your request but only after I hear from Attorney Holland.” He then turns and motions for me to stand and present my case. I get up feeling all eyes on me. I bow to Elder Bevis and thank him for allowing me to present. Without looking at the audience, I start my plead. “A young and talented girl made her way to the Frostcrest Pack in search of landing a dancing career. Some people call being a stripper a disgrace when in reality for some it is a steppingstone into a brighter future. This case seems too clean but there are questions that go unanswered. My investigators have found some interesting information. I don’t want to divulge all the findings until I get the witnesses on the stand and sworn to tell the truth. I’ll be able to question the integrity of Saliana as she didn’t sleep around as many of the girls. She also stayed clean. In fact, I’ll be calling witnesses of the club who say Heroin isn’t something they do. See, for one, the drug hampers a dancer’s ability and causes the body to deteriorate. For two, Saliana had all intentions of keeping her child and soon let it be known that she had found her mate.” I stopped as I heard gasping from the room. I then continued, “So you see, this might be a case about malpractice, or this case might end up being about murder. Whichever way it turns out, I want to question Dr. Moss.” I say this and turn to stare at this man to let him know that I mean business. Bad move! Our eyes meet and I take in the deepest breath possible. It him. It’s my mate! Elder Bevis, “Ms. Holland! Is everything ok? You seem pale all of a sudden. Are you finished?” I turn to face Elder Bevis not realizing that I’ve been standing still for a few minutes just staring into the eyes of Dr. Tegan Moss, my mate. “No sir, I’ll continue. Saliana deserves us to find the truth. If Dr. Moss did something wrong, he deserves punishment. If someone else did something wrong, we need to explore who that person is as well. I think we as wolves know the punishment and need to fulfill our obligation to those who came before us and to those who will come after us.” I bow and turn capturing his eyes once again. Delilah is startled but urging me to go to him. She’s screaming that mate is innocent. She can’t begin to understand that it’s a real possibility that our mate is a murderer.
