GLIMMER OF HOPE

1579 Words
Tegan POV The Elder dismissed everyone for the day. The attorney’s needed to submit who was being requested to testify tomorrow. In that mix is Saliana’s mother and my assistant, Monet. I can’t imagine why she is being called unless it is to substantiate my medical information. I waited until she emerged from the room. I know I couldn’t talk with her because that would just cause problems for both of us. I’m not sure why I waited. I suppose it was to get a glimpse of her once again before I leave. My wolf will not shut up. Dylan keeps begging for his mate. He can feel her and informs me that she is trying to reach him as well. I feel bad for him and for myself. The only glimmer of hope I find is that in her closing words, she left open the possibility of there being someone else responsible for the death of Saliana. I hope that f*****g bartender didn’t mention anything about me previously knowing Saliana. I’m assuming that Devyn was questioning him about Saliana’s work history. Oh yeah and being f****d in a closet. The thought of that makes my guts clench. I can feel my teeth elongating. I quickly think of something different. I can’t afford to appear undisciplined. It took me years to completely be able to subdue my wolf because he wanted his mate for those long years. In fact, I was one of the few doctors who held it together during an attack on the hospital by thugs. She walks out and immediately notices me leaning against the wall. I was not expecting her to walk towards me. She got close but not too close so that no one could hear what she was saying although they probably could if they tried given, we are all werewolves. Devyn, “Mate! Let’s get one thing straight – I think you are shady as hell. When this trial is finished, I will formally reject your ass. I don’t care the consequences of the rejection. Continue standing here looking smug, it won’t last long.” She turns and walks away putting an extra sway into her hips. I should be mad as hell or even scared. Instead, I stand her turned the f**k on by her aggressiveness. Dear goddess, when she walks, I can’t concentrate on anything other than her ass. I should have said something. I should have pled my innocence. I should have done something besides stand there looking into the beautiful blue eyes of my mate. Devyn POV My heart was being torn apart from the words I said to Tegan, I mean Dr. Moss. How dare he stand waiting for me. He stood there looking like a super model. I hate being this attracted to him. He’s slightly taller than me with short on the sides and longer on the top blonde hair. Oh, and those gorgeous blue/green eyes. I could melt just staring into them forever. I realize that these feelings are the mating bond. I’m glad I pulled from within and said what I said to him. It was the honest truth no matter how much my wolf is going to be devastated. I know what he is. He is a murderous mate looking to cover his ass. I fall asleep as soon as I fall into the bed. Tomorrow is a long day once again. I get to call two of the people I suggested. I fall into a slumber and immediately dream about Tegan. My dream is filled with touching, kissing, and making love. I hate that I have this much attraction to him. I wake up realizing that I had dreamt the entire night about being in his arms. I think about it and decide maybe Delilah just needs a good f**k soon. That’s it. I’ll go home tomorrow night after court. Hopefully, Mitch is back, and we can have makeup s*x. Tegan POV Another night filled with Devyn occupying my every thought. I’m at the court and see Monet arriving. I got to her and chat about how she is feeling. I know she is nervous since this will be her first time being in the presence of Elder Bevis. We hear the summoning of all to enter so I place my hand on Monet’s lower back to motion for her to head that way. I hear a low growl from behind me. I turn to see Devyn staring at my hand on Monet’s back. I quickly retreat it even though it was certainly only a friendly gesture. I smirk a little to myself thinking that my mate is jealous. It makes me content because maybe there is a chance for us. Devyn calls Mrs. Bruna Garnets to the stand and she is sworn in by Elder Bevis. He instructs her that lying to the court is prohibited. She agrees and the questioning begins. Devyn, “Bruna, first I have to express my sadness about your daughter. A mother should never be in this position. I’ll be as careful to consider your feelings when I ask questions.” Bruna, “Much appreciated but I have nothing to hide. I just want that doctor over there to pay for not saving my precious Saliana.” Attorney Nellow quickly stands saying, “Mrs. Garnets, you have no right accusing anyone of anything. What kind of a grandmother refuses her own granddaughter?” Bruna, “Listen her you little sniveling s**t, I’ll …” Elder Bevis, “Enough! Attorney Nellow, you’ll have your turn. Mrs. Garnets, no threats in my court.” They both reply, “Yes, Elder Bevis.” Devyn, “OK, well that was unexpected. Without passing judgement, why don’t you tell me about Saliana.” Bruna, “Yes, of course. Saliana was an extraordinarily talented she-wolf. Her ambition was to perform on Broadway. She was granted permission to leave our pack to pursue that dream. Being from a family without a lot of money, she needed to make some money. She ended up dancing at a club. This ultimately led to her death.” Devyn, “Did she ever mention friends, roommates, or boyfriends?” Bruna, “The only friend she mentioned was her roommate, but they didn’t really get along, so I guess they weren’t truly friends. She had a guy friend that she admired but never told me his name. Then she found her mate who was the father of the baby.” Gasps are heard. Mate. She found her mate. This is new. Even Saliana didn’t mention finding her mate to me. Devyn, “Who is her mate?” Again, gasps followed by silence of anticipation. Bruna, “I wish I knew. He knocked her up but didn’t even have the balls to tell his pack. He gave some horseshit excuse that they only initiate new members to the pack every 3 months. That still doesn’t excuse why he couldn’t accept her and provide a safe environment. Apparently, the dickhead was important so his pride outweighed my daughter.” Devyn, “Bruna, I’m so deeply sorry to ask this next question. Is it a possibility that Saliana was rejected and overdosed on purpose?” Angrily Bruna responded, “Absolutely not! She accepted that he had to keep quiet for the time. Why? I haven’t a clue. She was also thrilled about their baby.” Devyn, “Attorney Nellow, I’ll allow you to ask some questions now.” Attorney Nellow, “Bruna, why don’t you want your grandchild?” Bruna, “I do WANT my grandchild. The answer to what you’re asking is that I’m getting older and have no means of supporting my granddaughter. I heard she was being kept in the pack house and cared for by Alpha Sa.. Hogan’s staff. I’m positive she will be given a better life there than I could even imagine.” Attorney Nellow, “Do you know that the club is known not only for stripping? I mean, the girls are w***e’s you know.” That was it. Bruna came across the bench and attacked my attorney. The court room was a mess. Elder Bevis was using his authoritative voice but there was too much going on. I scan the room to find Devyn in the middle trying to separate Bruna from Nellows. I then see him draw his fist to hit Devyn. It was like a flash that I was there grabbing his hand. I then was able to drag him from under Bruna. Elder Bevis is still shouting. The chaos finally settles down. “Mrs. Garnets and Attorney Nellows! Both of you are acting like children! I will have no more of the name calling, Nellows. And for you Mrs. Garnets, your actions just landed you in confinement for the night. Guards! Take her away now and we’ll have a break. Be back at 1pm for the next witness. And for goddess’s sake, keep yourselves in control.”
