ONE
Elara James hated being late. Not because teachers, scared of her, most of them barely noticed her, but because being late brought unwanted attention, and attention was the least thing she wanted in a school like Meadowbrook, where gossip flies like birds. So when she hurried through the tall iron gates of Meadowbrook High that Monday morning, heart racing, hair disheveled, and sweating, she was certain it was going to be one hell of a day. The guard was about to close the gate when she screamed at him “You are late, young lady” “I am sorry” she said as she ran past the gate towards the lobby when the bell rang for the first class “Perfect, just perfect,” she muttered under her breath as she made her way towards her locker Meadowbrook High looked the same as always: old brick buildings, banners flapping lazily in the breeze, clusters of students laughing too loudly as if the school itself were a stage. Elara slowed her steps, smoothing her skirt, forcing her breathing to even out. She refused to look rushed. Refused to look small. She adjusted her glasses, ran a hand through her hair, and lifted her chin. Another day. Another routine. She had plans, big ones. University brochures hidden under her bed, dreams scribbled in the margins of notebooks. She wasn’t going to be another girl who peaked in high school. She would leave this place behind, neatly and without regret. She made it halfway across the courtyard before everything shifted. It wasn’t dramatic. No lightning. No music in the background. Just a collision. Fast and sudden. “Oooo” Elara stumbled back as someone ran straight into her, the impact causing the books in her arms to fall to the ground. Paper and pens were scattered across the ground. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” a voice said quickly. Elara sighed, already crouching to gather her things. “It’s fine. I should’ve..” Her words died in her throat. Because the boy kneeling across from her wasn’t anyone she recognized. He had dark hair that fell messily over his forehead, like he hadn’t bothered to comb it. His blazer hung loosely on his shoulders, sleeves pushed up to reveal strong forearms. But it was his eyes that stopped her completely. They are deep, green, and sharp with focus yet soft with concern. He was already handing her a notebook. “ Are you okay?” he asked. Elara blinked, taking it. “What? Yeah. I mean yes. I’m fine.” He smiled, just a little, and something in her chest fluttered in a way she didn’t understand. “I wasn’t looking where I was going,” he said. “First day mistake.” “First day?” she asked “Transferred.” He held up her pen. “Is this yours?” “Yes. Thank you.” Their fingers brushed when she took it, a brief touch that sent warmth racing up her arm. Elara pulled back too quickly, annoyed at herself. “Are you always this careful?” he teased lightly. She frowned. “Usually.” He laughed, and it was easy. Like he did it often. “Noah,” he said, standing and offering her his hand. “. My name is Noah Blackwood.” Elara hesitated, then took it. His grip was steady. “Elara James.” “Nice to meet you, Elara James.” He said her name as it mattered. The bell rang again, louder this time. “Oh my” Elara glanced at her wrist watch. “I’m late.” “Same,” Noah said. “What class?” “History.” His eyebrows lifted. “You’re kidding. Same.” Of course it was. They walked side by side, an unspoken agreement settling between them. Elara was super aware of his presence the way he matched her stride without trying, the faint scent of soap and something clean, unfamiliar. “So,” he said, glancing at her. “Any survival tips? New-kid handbook?” “Don’t sit in the back if you don’t want teachers calling on you,” she said. “And don’t mess with the debate team. They’re ruthless.” He laughed again. “Noted.” They reached the classroom just as the teacher closed the door. Mr. Harris sighed when he saw them. “And you are?” “Noah Blackwood,” Noah said smoothly. “Transfer student.” “Elara James,” Elara added quickly. “Sorry, sir.”She said as she sat down in her seat. “I know you” he said as he rolled his eyes “So class we have a new student. Tell them your name” he said to Noah. “Hi everyone. My name is Noah, Noah blackwood. The whole class erupted in whispers. Everyone has something to say. Mr. Harris waved them in with a look of mild disappointment. “Enough everyone. Please take a seat.” The only empty desk was beside her. Of course Noah sat beside her, their elbows nearly touching. As the lesson began, Elara tried to focus. Tried to remember dates she knew by heart. But she kept catching herself glancing sideways, noticing the way Noah listened intently, brows drawn together, like he actually cared. Halfway through class, he leaned over slightly. “Do you always take notes like that?” She frowned. “Like what?” “So neat. It’s impressive.” “It’s practical,” she said, though a smile tugged at her lips. “I’m doomed,” he whispered. “My notes look like a crime scene.” She chuckled and the whole class looked at her “Anything to say, Miss James” “ No sir. I am sorry” “So class in the 18th century…” the teacher continued while she bowed her head to smile. When class ended, they packed up together, moving in quiet sync. “You heading to lunch?” he asked. “Yeah.” “Mind if I join you?” She should’ve said no. She usually ate with Maya but she is having an extra class for a presentation she has been preparing for over a week. Her circle was small and safe. But something about Noah felt… easy. “Sure,” she said. It’s better than eating alone. They walked through the halls, conversation flowing without effort. He told her about moving cities, about hating the cold, about how his family traveled a lot. She told him about her love for planning things, how she liked order, how chaos made her itch. They talked like they had known each other for years which was very strange because she was an awfully private person. “You sound like someone who knows what she wants,” he said. Elara shrugged. “Someone has to.” He looked at her like he was seeing something important. “I like that.” By the time lunch ended, Elara felt strange, lighter, like the world had quietly tilted. At the end of the day, they stood by the school gates. “Same time tomorrow?” Noah asked. Elara nodded before she could stop herself. “Yeah. Same time.” “ Now who was that? Elara jumped “I have told you to stop sneaking up on me. Do you want me dead? “ I am sorry. So who is he? He looks new” “He is a transfer student. His name is Noah. Noah Blackwood” “Cool. It’s nice to see a new face around here. “Yea” She said as she handed her a sandwich and yogurt she kept for her. “ Thanks Elara. You are the best. “So how was the presentation?” She asked as they walked home. And as usual, Maya filled her in on everything: Presentation, gossips and thoughts. As she walked into her bedroom, the sun seeping through her window and warm on her face, Elara didn’t know that this was the beginning of everything bad, lovely, heartbreaking, pure, and sincere All she knew was that a boy with green eyes had stepped into her life and made her smile on her first encounter And somehow, nothing would ever be the same again
