Monday. 9:00 AM. Law Office of Arthur Miller.
The conference room smelled like coffee and printer ink.
Sophia sat at the head of the table. Arthur on her right.
Her lawyer, Ms. Daniels, on her left.
Across from them: Ethan. And his lawyer.
Ethan looked different. Haircut. Plain suit. No watch.
He looked like someone trying to be smaller.
"Morning," Ms. Daniels said. "Let’s make this quick."
She slid a stack of papers across the table.
"Custody Agreement. Visitation Schedule. Child Support Waiver.
Parental Rights Addendum."
Ethan didn’t touch them. "What’s this?"
"This," Arthur said, "is what responsibility looks like on paper."
---
The first page: CUSTODY.
`Joint Legal Custody: Both parents have equal say in medical,
education, and religious decisions.`
`Primary Physical Custody: Sophia Miller.
Reason: Child has resided with mother since birth.`
Ethan read it. Nodded. "Okay."
Ms. Daniels flipped the page. "VISITATION."
`Thursdays: 2 hours, supervised at Blackwood Family Center.
Saturdays: 4 hours, unsupervised, starting after 60 days of
consistent Thursday visits.
Holidays: Alternating. First year: Mother gets Christmas,
Father gets Thanksgiving.`
Ethan’s throat moved. "Saturdays? Unsupervised?"
"After 60 days," Ms. Daniels said. "If Ms. Carter reports
no issues. If you don’t miss a visit. If you don’t try anything."
Ethan looked at Sophia. "I won’t."
Sophia didn’t look back.
---
Page 3: CHILD SUPPORT.
`Father waives right to request child support from Mother.
Father agrees to pay $5,000 monthly into a trust for Leo,
until child turns 18.
Father agrees to cover 50% of all medical, education, and
childcare expenses.`
Ethan frowned. "I thought I was paying 5 million as a settlement."
"That was to Victoria," Arthur said. "This is for Leo. Separate."
Ethan rubbed his face. "Okay."
He picked up the pen.
"Wait," his lawyer said. "Mr. Blackwood, you don’t have to sign
this today. We can negotiate."
Ethan looked at the papers. Then at Sophia.
"She’s giving me Saturdays," he said. "She’s letting me see him.
I’m not negotiating that."
He signed. Page after page.
Ethan Blackwood.
---
11:30 AM. Sophia’s Office.
The signed copies were on her desk.
Sophia was staring at them when Arthur came in.
"You okay?" he asked.
Sophia picked up the last page. "He signed everything.
No fight."
"Because he knows he’d lose," Arthur said. "And because of Leo."
Sophia sighed. "It’s official now. He has rights."
"He always had rights," Arthur said. "Now it’s just written down."
Sophia put the papers down. "Saturdays. Unsupervised.
In 60 days."
"That’s the goal," Arthur said. "If he earns it."
---
1:00 PM. Ethan’s Apartment.
Ethan put the signed copy in a folder. Labeled it: `LEO`.
He took a picture and sent it.
Ethan: `Signed. Filed. All of it.`
He stared at his phone.
No reply.
He opened his calendar. Marked every Thursday.
Marked 60 days from now. Circle around the first Saturday.
He whispered to the empty room: "I’m not gonna mess this up."
---
3:00 PM. Blackwood Family Center.
Thursday. Week 3.
Sophia came in with Leo. Ethan was already on the floor.
Ms. Carter smiled. "New paperwork came through.
Everything is official now."
Sophia sat on the couch. Ethan looked up.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," Sophia said.
Ethan reached into his bag. Pulled out a small book.
"Goodnight, Moon," he said. "Again."
Leo crawled to him.
For an hour, they read. Stacked blocks. Sang songs.
At 3:30, Ms. Carter said, "Time’s up."
Ethan stood. "Same time next week?"
Sophia nodded. "Yes."
Ethan hesitated. "The papers... thank you. For not making it harder."
Sophia picked up Leo. "It’s not about you. It’s about him."
"I know," Ethan said. "But still. Thank you."
---
6:00 PM. Sophia’s Apartment.
Leo was eating dinner. Sophia was checking emails.
Her phone buzzed.
Bank Alert: `$5,000 deposit from E. Blackwood Trust`
Another buzz.
Ethan: `First payment sent. Will be every 1st of the month.
Receipt attached.`
Sophia opened the attachment. A bank transfer. $5,000.
Memo: `For Leo. October.`
She stared at it.
Then she opened her notebook.
Step 10: Legal stuff.
Step 10.1: Custody signed.
Step 10.2: Money in trust.
Step 10.3: 57 days until Saturdays.
She closed the notebook.
Leo threw a piece of banana on the floor.
Sophia laughed. "Messy boy."
---
9:00 PM. Ethan was at a job interview.
`So, Mr. Blackwood. Why the gap in employment?`
Ethan took a breath. "I made mistakes. I’m fixing them.
I have a son. I need to be present."
The interviewer nodded. "We’ll call you."
---
Friday. 10:00 AM. Arthur’s Office.
Arthur called Sophia in.
"Got a call from Ethan’s lawyer," Arthur said. "He wants to add
something to the agreement."
Sophia tensed. "What?"
"A clause," Arthur said. "If he misses 2 visits in a row without
hospital proof, he loses unsupervised visits for 6 months."
Sophia blinked. "He asked for that?"
"Yes," Arthur said. "He said ‘I need accountability.’"
Sophia was quiet. "Fine. Add it."
Arthur smiled. "You’re raising a good man, even if he was dumb before."
---
Saturday. Sophia took Leo to the park.
She filmed him crawling fast. Almost running.
She almost sent it to Ethan.
She didn’t.
But she saved it in a folder called `For Dad`.
---
Sunday. 8:00 PM.
Sophia was putting Leo to bed when her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered. "Hello?"
"Sophia? It’s me." Ethan’s voice. Nervous.
"What do you want?" Sophia said.
"Just to confirm," Ethan said quickly. "Thursday. 2 PM.
I’ll be there. I just... didn’t want you to think I forgot."
Sophia was quiet. "I know you won’t forget."
"Okay," Ethan said. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Sophia said. And hung up.
She looked at Leo. Sleeping.
She opened her phone. Blocked the number.
Then unblocked it.
---
Monday. 9:00 AM. Blackwood Tower.
The HR email came in.
`Mr. Ethan Blackwood has been hired as Junior Analyst.
Starts next month.`
Sophia read it twice.
Arthur came in. "Saw that?"
"Yes," Sophia said.
"He’s trying," Arthur said.
Sophia didn’t answer.
She opened her calendar. 56 days until Saturdays.
She wrote in it: `Co-parenting is paperwork and patience.`
