CHAPTER 1: DAY 1 OF REVENGE
9:00 AM. Blackwood Industries. 60th Floor. The elevator doors opened. Silence. 300 employees stopped typing. Phones were put down. Everyone was staring. Sophia Miller walked in. Not in the faded dress she wore 2 years ago. Not with the bruised eyes and swollen feet. Not as the "useless housewife" Ethan told everyone she was. In a black tailored suit. Louboutin heels. Hair in a sleek bun. Diamond studs that cost more than Ethan’s car. And 40% of this company in her name. "Good morning," Sophia said. Her voice was calm. Cold. "I’m your new CEO." A gasp went through the floor. --- 2 YEARS AGO. Rain. "You’re nothing without me," Ethan Blackwood said. He threw her suitcase onto the wet driveway. "You cook. You clean. That’s all you’re good for, Sophia." Sophia stood barefoot. 6 months pregnant. Clutching her grandfather’s necklace. $200 in her pocket. "You’ll regret this," she whispered. Ethan laughed. "With what money? Go cry to your dead grandpa." The door of the mansion slammed. Sophia stood there for 10 minutes before she walked away. She didn’t know then that Grandpa James had left her 40% of Blackwood Industries in a trust. His last words to her were: "Don’t open it until you need it, baby girl." Today, she needed it. --- PRESENT. CEO OFFICE. It was still Ethan’s office. Mahogany desk. Floor to ceiling windows. His name still on the gold plate: `ETHAN BLACKWOOD, CEO` Sophia sat in his chair. Ran her hand over the leather. It still smelled like his cologne. Knock. "Come in," she said. Ethan walked in. He froze in the doorway. Sophia. In his chair. In his company. "What the hell are you doing here?" Ethan said. Perfect suit. Perfect hair. The same arrogant billionaire badboy who broke her. But his eyes were wide. Sophia smiled. "Working. What does it look like?" "You can’t be here. Security—" "I am security," Sophia cut him off. She slid a thick document across the desk. "As of 8:00 AM today, Sophia Miller Holdings owns 40% of Blackwood Industries. That makes me the majority shareholder, Ethan. The Board voted me CEO 20 minutes ago." Ethan’s face went red. Then white. "That’s impossible. Your grandpa hated me." "My grandpa loved me," Sophia said softly. "Even when you called me a maid in front of his grave." She stood up. Walked around the desk to him. Click. Click. Click. She was 5’8 in heels. Taller than him now. "Day 1 of my revenge starts now," Sophia whispered. "You threw me out with nothing. Pregnant. Now I own everything you have." Ethan grabbed her wrist. Hard. "You think this scares me?" Sophia didn’t flinch. "Let. Go. Of. Me." He did. Sophia rubbed her wrist and picked up the phone. "Security? Escort Mr. Blackwood to his new office. Floor 2. With the interns." Two guards appeared immediately. "You can’t do this!" Ethan yelled as they grabbed his arms. "I built this company!" Sophia sat back down. "And I’m rebuilding it. Get his name off the door." The door closed. --- 11:00 AM. Press Conference. Grand Ballroom. Cameras. Flashes. Reporters. Sophia stood at the podium. The Blackwood logo behind her. She wore confidence like armor. "Good morning," she said. "I’m Sophia Miller. As of today, I am CEO of Blackwood Industries." Gasps. Whispers. "For the last 2 years, this company has been run into the ground by bad leadership. By arrogance. By cheating." She looked straight into the camera. She knew Ethan was watching from floor 2. "That ends today. We will be transparent. We will be ethical. And we will be profitable." A reporter raised a hand. "Ms. Miller, is it true you’re the ex-wife of Ethan Blackwood?" Sophia smiled. "Yes. And it’s also true that I built this company’s first charity program. That I designed the Blackwood Foundation. That I know every department because I used to clean them at night while he was at the club." Another gasp. Louder. "I’m not here for revenge," Sophia lied smoothly. "I’m here for results. And the first result is this: starting today, all employees get health benefits and a 10% raise." The room erupted. --- 2:00 PM. Floor 2. Intern Pit. A cubicle. No window. Next to the printer that never stopped. Ethan threw his coffee across the room. "SHE CAN’T DO THIS!" His assistant, Maya, 22 years old, didn’t look up. "Sir... she can. She owns more shares than you." Ethan slammed his fist on the cheap desk. "I made her! I gave her everything! The house. The clothes. The name!" Maya finally looked at him. "You gave her $200 and a restraining order, sir. And you cheated." Ethan stared at her. "What did you say?" "Nothing, sir." The printer started again. --- 5:00 PM. CEO Office. Sophia was finally alone. She kicked off her heels. Her feet hurt. She opened the bottom drawer. There was a photo. Her and Grandpa James at her college graduation. "I did it, Grandpa," she whispered. "I’m CEO." Her phone buzzed on the desk. Unknown number. Text: `You think you won? This is just day 1. - E` Sophia typed back: `Good. I like long games.` Send. She opened another drawer. Pulled out a black file. `PROJECT: PHOENIX` Her revenge plan. 30 steps. Written the night she slept in her car. Step 1: Take his company. ✓ Step 2: Take his clients. Step 3: Destroy his reputation. Step 4: Make the board fire him. ... Step 30: Make him beg. Sophia closed the file. Outside, the city lights were coming on. Gold against the black sky. Knock. Her assistant poked her head in. "Ms. Miller, your 6 PM is here. Mr. Carter from Carter Enterprises. He wants to discuss pulling his $200 million contract from Mr. Blackwood." Sophia put her heels back on. Straightened her jacket. Red lipstick. "Send him in," she said. "Day 1 isn’t over yet." The door opened. And Sophia Miller, the "useless housewife", smiled. Because the queen had just taken the castle. And she was just getting started.
