Wednesday. 8:00 AM. Blackwood Tower. CEO Office.
Sophia was on her third coffee.
Project reports everywhere. Leo’s daycare bills on one side.
Legal fees on the other.
Arthur knocked and came in. "You look tired."
"I’m fine," Sophia said. "What is it?"
Arthur sat down. "We have a problem. Victoria Hayes."
Sophia put her cup down. "What about her?"
"She’s back in the country," Arthur said. "And she’s suing.
Claiming emotional damages from the board scandal.
She wants 5 million dollars and a public apology from the company."
Sophia laughed. No humor. "She cheated with the CEO.
And she wants money?"
"Her lawyer is good," Arthur said. "And she has texts.
From Ethan. During company hours."
Sophia rubbed her temples. "What do you want me to do?"
"I want you to settle," Arthur said. "Quietly. Before it goes public.
It’ll tank the stock we just rebuilt."
Sophia stood. Walked to the window. "No."
"Sophia—"
"No," she said again. "We don’t pay people to stay quiet.
Not anymore. That’s what Ethan did. And look where it got us."
Arthur was quiet. "You sound like me 30 years ago."
"Good," Sophia said.
Her assistant buzzed. "Ms. Miller, Ms. Karen Mills is here to see you.
She says it’s urgent. About Mr. Blackwood."
Sophia and Arthur looked at each other.
"Send her in," Sophia said.
---
8:30 AM.
Karen Mills walked in. No smile. Briefcase.
"Ms. Miller," she said. "Mr. Blackwood asked me to deliver this personally."
She placed an envelope on the desk.
"What is it?" Sophia asked.
"An offer," Karen said. "From Mr. Blackwood."
Sophia didn’t touch it. "I don’t take offers from him."
Arthur picked it up. Opened it. Read.
His eyebrows went up. "Well."
"What?" Sophia asked.
Arthur handed it to her.
Sophia read.
`TO: SOPHIA MILLER
FROM: ETHAN BLACKWOOD
RE: SETTLEMENT OFFER`
`1. I will publicly take full responsibility for the Victoria scandal.
2. I will sign away all claims to Blackwood shares. Forever.
3. I will pay 5 million to settle Victoria’s lawsuit personally.
4. In exchange: I request unsupervised visitation with Leo,
starting in 3 months, pending court approval.
5. I will not contest child support. I will pay whatever you ask.`
Sophia’s hands shook. "He’s buying access to his son."
"No," Karen said. "He’s taking responsibility so you don’t have to.
And he’s protecting the company. And Leo’s inheritance."
Arthur read it again. "This is... actually smart."
Sophia threw the paper down. "I don’t need his help!"
"Yes you do," Arthur said quietly. "5 million is half our legal budget this quarter.
And if Victoria goes public, we lose clients again."
Sophia paced. "He cheated. He lied. He told me to kill our baby.
And now he wants a reward?"
"He’s not asking for a reward," Karen said. "He’s asking for a chance.
In 3 months. After he’s proven himself."
Sophia stopped at the window. Below, the city looked small.
"What if I say no?" she asked.
"Then we fight Victoria in court," Arthur said. "6 months. Bad press.
Stock drops. And Ethan still files for custody anyway."
Sophia closed her eyes. "Get out, Karen."
Karen nodded. Left the envelope.
---
12:00 PM. Sophia’s Apartment.
Leo was napping.
Sophia stared at the offer on her kitchen table.
Her phone rang. Unknown.
She answered. "What?"
"Sophia," Ethan’s voice. "Did you get it?"
"Don’t call me," she said.
"I had to," Ethan said. "I couldn’t sleep.
Victoria is threatening to release the texts to the press tomorrow."
Sophia’s blood went cold. "What texts?"
"Texts where I talk about the board," Ethan said. "About Arthur.
About you. It’ll look like you were involved."
"I wasn’t," Sophia said.
"I know," Ethan said. "But the internet won’t care.
That’s why I’m offering to take the blame. Publicly."
Sophia sat down. "Why?"
Silence.
"Because of Leo," Ethan said. "Because he deserves a company that’s not on fire.
And because... because I was wrong. About everything."
Sophia said nothing.
"I don’t expect you to forgive me," Ethan said. "I just need you to say yes.
To the 3 months. To the visitation later."
"And if I say no?" Sophia asked.
"Then I’ll do it anyway," Ethan said. "Take the blame. Pay Victoria.
But you’ll hate me more. And the court will see that."
Click. He hung up.
Sophia put the phone down.
Leo cried from the bedroom.
---
3:00 PM. Mr. Greene’s Office.
Sophia threw the offer on his desk. "Read this."
Greene read. Slowly.
"This is legally binding," he said. "If he signs away shares, he can never come back."
"Good," Sophia said.
"And the visitation clause is fair," Greene said. "3 months is standard
for supervised to unsupervised transition."
Sophia stood. "I hate this."
"I know," Greene said. "But hate doesn’t run a company.
Decisions do."
Sophia walked to the door. "Tell him yes.
But with conditions."
"What conditions?" Greene asked.
"1. The apology goes on company website and LinkedIn.
2. The 5 million is in escrow by Friday.
3. No contact with me outside of court and visitation.
4. If he misses one visit, the deal is off forever."
Greene nodded. "I’ll draft it."
---
6:00 PM. Blackwood Tower.
Ethan was in a coffee shop across the street.
He wasn’t allowed inside.
His phone buzzed.
Greene: `Ms. Miller accepts. With conditions. See email.`
Ethan opened the email. Read the 4 conditions.
He typed back with shaking hands: `I agree to all.`
Then he added: `Thank you.`
He looked up at the tower. 60th floor. Her office light was on.
He whispered: "Thank you, Sophia."
---
9:00 PM. CEO Office.
The press release was already drafted.
`FORMER CEO ETHAN BLACKWOOD TAKES FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR
BOARD MISCONDUCT. PLEDGES 5 MILLION TO SETTLE CLAIMS.`
Sophia read it three times.
Arthur came in. "It’s going live at midnight."
Sophia nodded.
"You did the right thing," Arthur said.
"Did I?" Sophia asked. "Or did I just sell Leo’s dad for 5 million?"
Arthur sat down. "You protected Leo’s future.
That’s what mothers do."
Sophia looked at the photo on her desk. Leo. Smiling.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown: `It’s done. The press release is live.
Money is in escrow.
See you Thursday. - E`
Sophia didn’t reply.
She opened her notebook.
Step 9: Build the future.
Step 9.1: Figure out what family means now.
Step 9.2: Forgive? Maybe. But not today.
She underlined the last line twice.
Outside, the city lights flickered.
The war was over.
Now came the hard part: peace.
