733 Words
3 Months Later. 9:00 AM. Private Airport. Blackwood Jet. Sophia stood on the tarmac in a black coat. Leo in her arms. 9 months now. Sitting up. Waving. Behind her: 20 employees. Board members. Press. The jet door opened. Arthur Blackwood walked out. Cane in hand. White hair. Eyes sharp. He looked 10 years younger. The crowd clapped. Sophia didn’t move. Tears fell. "Grandpa," she whispered. Arthur walked straight to her. Looked at Leo. Then pulled Sophia into a hug. "You did it, girl," he said. "You saved us." --- 10:30 AM. CEO Office. 60th Floor. Arthur sat in the chair. His chair. Sophia stood beside him. "I was dying," Arthur said. "Cancer. Stage 3. I faked my death so Ethan would show his true colors. And he did." Sophia nodded. "He fell apart." "And you rose," Arthur said. "Stock is up 40%. Clients back. Lawsuits dropped. You’re a Blackwood." He looked at Leo on Sophia’s lap. "My great-grandson. The real heir." Arthur picked up a pen. Signed a paper. "Effective today, I’m transferring my remaining 10% to Leo’s trust. You remain trustee until he’s 18." Sophia exhaled. "Thank you." "Don’t thank me," Arthur said. "Be ready. Ethan’s court date is next week. He wants custody." --- 2:00 PM. Family Court. Courtroom. Cold. Wood panels. Ethan in a suit. Karen Mills beside him. Sophia in a navy dress. Mr. Greene beside her. Leo with the nanny outside. Judge Williams, 50s, looked over papers. "Mr. Blackwood is requesting joint custody and visitation rights," the judge said. "Ms. Miller is requesting supervised visits only." Karen stood. "Your honor, Mr. Blackwood is the biological father. He has been denied access to his son for 9 months." Mr. Greene stood. "Your honor, Ms. Miller has evidence of Mr. Blackwood’s infidelity, abuse of company funds, and hostility during pregnancy. The child’s safety is at risk." Ethan looked at Sophia. "I was wrong. I’m different now." Sophia didn’t look at him. The judge sighed. "I’m granting supervised visitation. Twice a week. 2 hours. At Blackwood Family Center. No overnight. No unsupervised. Review in 6 months." Gavel. Ethan closed his eyes. Sophia stood. "Thank you, your honor." --- 4:00 PM. Blackwood Tower. Arthur called a company-wide meeting. Auditorium full. 500 employees. "I’m back," Arthur said into the mic. "And I’m proud. Proud of this company. Proud of Sophia Miller. She’s CEO. And she’s staying CEO." Cheers. "And I’m proud of my great-grandson, Leo. The future of Blackwood." Cameras flashed. Ethan watched from the back. Security at the door. He wasn’t allowed on stage. After the meeting, Arthur saw him. "Son," Arthur said. "Don’t call me that," Ethan said. "I made mistakes," Arthur said. "With you. I spoiled you. I didn’t teach you how to be a man. Sophia did." Ethan laughed bitterly. "She destroyed me." "No," Arthur said. "You destroyed you. She just picked up the pieces." --- 8:00 PM. Sophia’s Apartment. Leo was asleep. Doorbell. Sophia opened it. Ethan. With a small toy car. "Supervised," he said, holding it up. "Can I come in? Just for 10 minutes. Nanny can stay." Sophia hesitated. Then stepped aside. Ethan walked in. Looked around. Small. Clean. Baby things everywhere. He sat on the floor. Didn’t touch anything. "Is he... okay?" Ethan asked. "He’s perfect," Sophia said. Ethan nodded. "I’m sorry. For everything. For the cheating. For the company. For telling you to—" He couldn’t finish. Sophia said nothing. Ethan stood. "I’ll go. See you Tuesday. At the center." He left the toy on the table. After he left, Sophia picked it up. Blue. Leo’s favorite color. She texted Mr. Greene: `He came. He was calm.` Reply: `Good. This is progress.` --- 11:00 PM. CEO Office. Arthur was there, waiting. "How are you?" he asked Sophia. "Tired," Sophia said. "But good." Arthur smiled. "You look like your mother. She was strong too." Sophia sat down. "Grandpa, why me? Why not Ethan?" "Because you bled for this company," Arthur said. "And you protected family. Ethan only wanted the title." He pulled out PROJECT PHOENIX from his briefcase. The old wall chart. He crossed out all 8 steps. Then wrote one new one. Step 9: Build the future. "This is yours now," Arthur said. "The company. Leo. Me. We’re behind you." Sophia took the paper. Folded it. Put it in her pocket. For the first time in 3 months, she slept without nightmares.
