Colonel Dickenson’s plan worked perfectly. His OCG attorney friend, Dave Darwin, had no trouble convincing the commanding general at 4th Division to appoint LtCol. Beck as Staff Judge Advocate, and Maj. Way as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate.
The 4th Marine Division Headquarters, nothing more than a warehouse built by the Navy during World War II, faced the Mississippi River, with its back against a rundown section of New Orleans. The Bachelor Officers’ Quarters also faced the river, but from the other side at Naval Base New Orleans, an old and almost abandoned naval port. Beck discovered that staying in the BOQ required taking a motor launch across the Mississippi River each day.
