Mavis stare out the window, her fingers ticking impatiently against the windowsill. She watches two crows hopping around the dead and wilted grass, their beady eyes gawking at her silhouette.
"Well, hello there." she says cheerily.
"Who are you greeting?" Mavis jerks from her sitting position, frightened at her mother's sudden voice.
"Just two little birds." her voice is laced with nervousness. Her mother, not satisfied with the answer, slowly stalks towards the window, holding a knitted rag in her hands. The two crows visibly jump in the air, and fly away fluently.
"Mentiroso," she swats Mavis with the rag, "those are omens."
Mavis let her head fall down, feeling heat rush to her cheeks. Mavis knew what her mother thought about a lot of things, but she never considered it to be true.
Her father always told her that you have to see it to believe it and she always favored those words deep inside her heart.
Her mother grabs her arm and pushes her on the little wooden chair in front of the mirror. She unbraids her long hair, letting it flow till her lower back. Her mother never believed in cutting girl's hair.
"You got all your father's genes, " her mother mutters angirly, as she violently puts scented oil on her hair, rushing a comb through it, "No one will ever love you."
Even though her mother said these words, like air she breathes, it always made her heart ache.
"Pretty little eyes, " she knacks her tongue, "beautiful face."
Mavis focuses on her reflection, letting herself admire her face. She had her father's big light green eyes. She smiles lightly, thinking of him and how he had the brightest smile and the most handsome face. She felt glad to have something to resemble about him. Her heart shaped face, and plumpy lips and everything reminded her of him. Except her straight light brown hair, which is the exact same color as her mother's.
"They'll see you," her mother continues, "And feel attracted to your beauty." she starts braiding Mavis's hair, her hands working roughly.
"But they will never truly love you, here." she taps on mavis's heart.
Mavis wanted to speak and stand up for herself, but she knew her mother would never let her, so she learned to always be silent.
After braiding, her mother pulls her up and she almost trips over her own feet. She takes off my warm sleeping gown. She surrounds my middle with my rigid corset and ties it tightly together. Wisps of cold air, touches my skin, making it erupt in goosebumps. She throws my black dress over my body and perfects it with a grey wool jacket.
"Dios Mio," her mother comments, still busying herself with Mavis, "It's cold." She throws a brown cloak over her jacket, ensuring Mavis to be warm.
"Thank you, mama." Mavis says.
"Yeah, yeah, put on your boots, and blow out the candles before you go." Mavis nods and does as instructed, before her mother leaves the room. She never understands her mother. At times it felt like she hated her, but at other times it seemed like she cared too much to not love her.
Making her way through the back, she catches a glimpse of her mother, and a few other men. Just like every single morning, she dishes warm porridge for each man, wearing ragged clothes with dirty marks all over their body. Mavis didn't know them or from where they are but she always kept herself out of their way, as her mom always gave her a nasty look when she's stalking. She quickly exits their home, feeling the rush of cold wind, nipping through her clothes. She tries not to shiver as follows the same cobbled stone rode as she did for ages, going to school. She keeps her hands tight against her body under the cloak.
"Good morning, young miss." the old man living next to them calls.
"Hi." Mavis calls out shyly, knowing her mother hates it when she talks to male strangers.
She walks faster, passing all the neighboring cottages, keeping her focus ahead. When it's finally only tall trees she's passing, she feels content, knowing there are no more eyes staring at her. She loves the sight of all the trees zooming past her and she starts to skip excitedly, ignoring the rush of cold air against her face. She eyes the dark clouds slowly moving in the sky, making the land on earth more shadowy than usual. Everyone she knew hated this weather, saying it attracts some of the darkest energy, inviting evil spirits but Mavis, even though she tries not to, loves this weather more than anything. Being deep in thought, Mavis suddenly hears a loud rumbling noise behind her and her heart starts to thunder. She slowly turns and feels engulfed by relief when she sees it's only a carriage, being carried by two beautiful black horses. She admires their masculine bodies, muscles bulging as they gallop with each step. As the carriage moves past her and she sees who's sitting in it, she immediately cringes and lets her head fall down in shame. It's a boy, from her school, a year above hers. He eyed her with cold and stiff eyes, biting on his teeth, revealing his strong jawbone. Mavis thought about how his handsome features and how her mother would say that no one would ever truly love him. But Mavis thought differently. She thinks no one would love him because of his nasty behavior, how he never smiles and most probably thinks he is better than everyone because of his family's richness and how they own a horse ranch. Very few of us live to own such a luxury.
The overwhelming feeling of embarrassment escapes out of Mavis's body, as the carriage becomes a little black dot in front of her.
She catches the sight of a bird hopping next to her, and frowns when she realizes it's a crow.
Then she notices another crow, them both eyeing her with their beady little eyes. She feels amazement when she realizes that it maybe could be the same two crows, that were in front of her room's window earlier.
Without thinking, Mavis stomps her foot on the ground, trying to shoo them away but they stay put. She bites her lips and runs towards them, stepping into wet and soggy ground, making mud, clinging under her boots. Her face scrunched together, confused at the birds dodging her steps, but not flying away. She claps her hands and yells at them, but they mockingly only hop forward, dragging her further into the woods.
When she realizes how far she's gotten into the woods, she immediately turns around to go back, when she hears a soft murmuring voice.
She hesitantly looks around, studying every tree around her, trying to locate where the sound came from.
She circles a big tree, each step making hard crunching noises of the old leaves below her feat.
When she hears another wailing noise, her blood runs cold and she starts to run towards the direction she came from, but trips over something and lands hard on her knees.
Pulling herself up, she falls again, this time, of something grabbing her ankles. She screams, but the sound gets lost through the hundreds of trees. Adrenaline explodes inside her body, and she uses all her strength, to pull herself away from the steel grip. She crawls, but it doesn't lose its grip. She looks backwards, trying to see who's dragging her, but she only splattered ground and leaves catch her sight.
Her body erupts in heat and she shudders when her head almost hits a tree.
"Stop." but her voice gets lost by the loud dragging voice.
As if her brain stopped working, she just lay helplessly, letting the pain of stumps and stones slice through her body.
She helplessly starts to whimper when the grip on her ankles instantly let's go and she comes to a halt.
She feels a strange sensation of intense dizziness, but grabs the opportunity and pushes herself up standing on her sore knees. Moving fast, she crawls forward, only to land in cold streaming water. A shocking gasp escapes her mouth, as the cold water crawls to her warm body. Taking a deep breath she pushed herself out of the water, scraping her legs on edges of hard stone.
She collapses on dry land and takes ten seconds to catch her lost breath, before she stands up, shuddering each time her wet clothes touch her bare body.
She starts to run, not knowing which way she came from. She looks around and darts from side to side, before she decides to go past a big tree stump laying on the ground, and go straight from there. She pushes through all the intense pain, throbbing through her body.
"Ahhhhhhh." she falls. She doesn't know how it happened, but with nothing below her feet, she falls. Cold air surges through her dress, making her shiver, and scream out of fear. As if the cold air pushes hard against her, she floats up. She screams louder and louder, hurting her own ears, when she falls down again, drifted by the wind.
Unable to think she embraces death, closes her eyes and holds her breath.
Until she lands. She opens her mouth, gulping cold air, but it didn't work. She lost her breath. She whales as she tries to full her empty lungs. Black starts invading the space between her thoughts and with adrenaline running out she feels pain spreading through her back.
Tears escape her eyes as she hyperventilates, still not getting any air. Her whole body feels melted, stuck to the ground, as if she's about to become a part of it.
She closes her eyes when she sees a figure hovering above her, before everything turns into nothingness.
