THE NEXT MORNING, Gran and I were lingering over breakfast in the sunroom; Charles had just left for work. I heard footsteps and looked up to see that he’d returned, so I said, “Forget something?”
“No. I got a phone call from Boston just as I was putting the key in the ignition.”
“And?”
“We’ll be flying to Boston this Friday. The surrogates are both scheduled for C-sections on Saturday, and barring complications, we can bring the babies home by the following Monday. I’ll arrange for our flights as soon as I get to the office, and I need you to make the necessary hotel reservations, not to mention set up things with the nanny.”
“Consider it done. Go on to work, I’ll handle things at this end.”
