BOOK EXCERPT:

“You keep testing me.” He ground out.

“You keep giving me more reasons to.”

Dark grey eyes met unwilling brown ones in a silent but loaded stare off.

And then he sighed. She wasn’t sure if that was one of defeat or just something else entirely. With this man as a case subject, she’d fail classes that test emotions.

“Get down here,” he finally said, his voice less hard this time.

Now that was a command she could obey without arguing it out. Slowly, to avoid toppling over in her heels, she slowly trudged down the stairs until she finally stopped in front of him—mere inches away.

********************

All her life, Mia has been told what to do and she did every single thing–no questions asked. Maybe because she never actually had a dream of her own, a hobby or something she loved and enjoyed genuinely.

With a rehearsed lifestyle, rich family and as the heiress to a large fortune, dreams weren’t really important to her.

But she had one dream though–marrying Dorian King, the insanely hot and powerful billionaire who on the contrary hated her to bits. His hatred, as deep as it ran, didn’t stop their family from arranging them to marry.

When Dorian suddenly began vying for divorce, Mia soon realizes that not every dream that comes true has an happy ending but she was determined to get her happy ending one way or the other.

But the road to her happiness only gets rougher when you throw family obligations, first loves and childhood memories, dark…deep secrets and misunderstandings into the mix.

1:After three years…
The taxi rolled to a stop in front of the gigantic mansion; one of the biggest buildings in the city of Newyork and one that also belonged to the billionaire whose name is always on the lips of people far and wide. The wife of that billionaire, Mia Moore, stepped out of the Taxi and took a few steps forward until she was closely in front of the mansion. Mia jeered her head up to the sky, the faint light of the sun hitting her eyes for a second as she tried to see how far the mansion went up to the sky. It was her husband’s mansion–their home. But she’s only been there once and it was on the day they got married. The day after, she was already miles away on the Atlantic Ocean, flying a plane that took her to a foreign country where she spent three years of her supposed married life, studying. And now that she's back, the mansion still doesn’t feel like home just like it didn’t feel that way three years ago when she got married to the famous billionaire. The text messages she got from her husband yesterday were more evidence that proved this place was never home to her and it would never be. “Excuse me, what do I do with your things?” The taxi driver drew her attention away from the thoughts of her pitiful life and back to the stocky man who drove her down from the airport. She forced a smile and dug into her purse, bringing out a few notes and handing them over to him. “Keep the change, a maid will get my things, you don’t have to worry about them.” She said softly to him. The man nodded. “Have a good day , ma’am.” The driver said, getting into his taxi and driving off. Mia watched the cloud of smoke that followed his car as he drove off and sighed. “I don’t think I’m going to have a good day or even good days after today.” She muttered to herself. The double doors of the mansion suddenly opened and Mia looked back in the direction of the Mansion. A middle aged woman spotted Mia and gasped, holding her palm to her mouth as she did. Mia smiled genuinely, happy that there was at least something good about the day. “My lady!” The woman yelled and ran towards Mia and pulled her into an embrace. “I told you to stop calling me that.” Mia protested but still let the woman hug her to her heart’s content. “That was three years ago, it doesn’t count.” Mia scoffed and slowly disentangled herself. “Is that really how it is?” The woman failed to notice or maybe she just pretended not to notice Mia feigning anger. Instead, she was all over Mia, touching her face and her whole body as if checking for injuries. “You said you were okay, you told me you ate well. Look at you, you’re jaunt and skinny, what have you been eating? Don’t tell me you lived on junks?” Mia rolled her eyes at the countless complaints of the Woman but as much as it annoyed her, she was happy to be welcomed into warm arms. The woman, Talia, was her family’s maid as well as her nanny as a child. She left with Mia when she got married and the woman had sworn her life to taking care of Mia and anything that belonged to her and this extended to even her billionaire husband which was why she still stayed around to help around the house even after Mia left three years ago. Although she was granted her own room in the mansion, she chose to come from her own home everyday. It made Mia’s heart warm. Maybe coming home wasn’t all bad. “You know what? I don’t even care what you ate, what you eat from now on is what matters, common, let’s get you settled in.” Mia nodded and Talia helped her carry her luggage into the Mansion. The interior of the Mansion was just as she remembered it, not even the Persian rug on the living room floor was switched out. It made her wonder what else hasn’t changed since she left. “Go on to your room and run a bath, I will finish up with my cooking so you can eat.” Talia said and made to leave. “My husband…where is he?” Mia asked quietly. It felt weird to call him her husband. It has always been weird but now it was worse to call him that; not after the messages she got from him last night while she was still abroad. “Mr King will be here soon, that is why you need to wash up before he arrives. He hasn’t seen you in years, make yourself pretty and doll yourself up for him.” Talia said with a wink and a smile before disappearing into one of the doors of the big mansion. Mia stood there and watched her leave. If only Talia knew what was going on and why she really had to come back home. Even if she puts on the prettiest dress in the world and gets dolled up by the best stylist, her husband wouldn’t spare her a single glance or blink in appraisal of her beauty. Mia dragged her feet off the floor and went to her matrimonial room. The one she never actually slept in. The room was just as she remembered it three years ago. The bed was still the same, king-sized with a canopy above it. The double doors of the closet were left open and from outside Mia could see the lines of suits and tuxedos hanging inside of it. The bedside drawer, the huge painting of an African elephant, the black and white wallpaper–everything was just the way she left them. Even the smell of the room was still the same. The essence of her husband’s favorite chocolate musk cologne still claimed the air of the room. Mia strode across the room barefooted and took in everything in the room. Her eyes fell back on the huge bed and she slowly sat on it. Its fluffy white sheets engulfed her body and warmed her instantly. Of course, the bed also felt the same way as the first time she slept on it. It brought memories of the night of her marriage and the look in her husband’s eyes that night. It wasn’t the look of one who was eager to shed the clothes of his wife that night and putting on a red pair of flimsy lingerie that she got for hundreds of dollars at a Victoria’s Secret store didn’t make his eyes grow lustful. It was simply the look of a man who would rather spend all night at his business meetings than in bed with her. That night, they had both slept with their backs turned against each other. He didn’t touch a single hair on her head. Their marriage was as loveless and sexless as arranged marriages came. They never consummated their marriage and so Mia couldn’t even tag this bed her matrimonial bed. And so she stood, as if it burned her just like the thought of having not slept with her husband burned a hole in a heart. She turned to leave but stopped, eyes falling on the bedside drawer. Mia couldn’t help crouching in front of the white wooden furniture even when she knew she shouldn’t he rummaging through her husband’s stuff but she did anyway. She opened the top drawer and was only greeted by crumpled receipts and custom made fountain pens. The second one was empty. She proceeded to open the third and she faltered when she catches glimpse of what was inside the drawer. With slow movements, she takes out the picture that was lying lonely in the third space of the drawer and stared down at it. It was a picture she has seen before. She was there. No…she was right behind the camera and she took the picture of her then teenage husband with ruffled brown hair and the bubbly tall girl beside him that she knew too well. He kept the picture she took for him years ago but there was no single picture they took on their wedding day in his room. He was smiling in the picture but he had never for once smiled in her direction. He would be home soon and she didn’t even know what she would say to him. If everything else was still the same, would he be the same too? Would he still look at her with cold eyes? Sighing, she put the picture back and shut the drawer before standing up. With one last glance around the room, Mia turned in the direction of the door to walk out and maybe really wash up before he returns. She stopped short before even taking a single step. A shadow fell by the doorway, tall and taking up the entire space with a masculine body. Mia blinked more than once as she stared at the familiar figure that she hasn’t seen for once in three years. She almost thought he was unreal, standing there like that. “You’re here.” The voice resonated through the room and right through Mia’s brain as well. With that voice, as exotic and deep as she remembers it, there was no way he was unreal. It was really him standing by the doorway. Her husband and infamous Billionaire, Dorian King.
