7: Deciding Fate.

"That jerk, he really is going through with it." Those words, they were a typical Judith thing to say and Mia had expected that much from her friend when she visited her during her lunch break at work. They were both seated across from each other in a small cafe near the clinic where Judith worked as a nurse, two cups of untouched cappuccino and sponge cakes on their table. "He is a crazy bastard." Judith fumed again. Mia winced. Try as she may, she couldn't get used to hearing people cuss neither has she ever tried doing so herself. Judith particularly had no filter when it came to spewing profanities and Mia had come to her knowing that. She had come to her expecting that because she couldn't do it on her own as much as she wanted to but listening to Judith actually doing it didn't make her feel any better. Maybe she should have just stayed in bed like she had planned to do the moment Dorian walked out of the house that morning. She had planned to lazy around the house in her crappy pyjamas, hog a bag of chips to herself and sit in front of the TV all day watching whatever series she could get her hands on. Her life was pathetic and and could at least act the part when her husband isn't him. She decided against it when she realized she would be home all day with their maid, Talia and it was only a matter of time before Talia found out what was going on. And so, she moved her pathetic self out of the mansion and came to the only place she knew she could be as pathetic as she wanted to be. Mia reached for her cup of coffee and took a sip while her friend stared at her as if she couldn't believe the nerve of her to be calm in the midst of so much chaos. "How can you stay calm in this situation?" Judith finally voiced out the thoughts Mia had suspected her to be having. Mia shrugged and put her cup down. "I don't know, Judith." Judith leaned closer across the table. “This marriage, when is it happening? When is he getting married to her?” She asked. Mia shook her head, “I have no idea.Irene is on tour at the moment.” Judith snorted, “That b***h, is it bad that to hope she never returns? The tour should be her last.” Mia’s eyes narrowed, “Judith, that’s too much.” In a way, she wasn’t entirely wrong. The tour was indeed Irene’s last tour before she gets married to Dorian. "What? She’s a bitch.” Mia wanted to cover her hears and put an end to the assault of Judith’s words but she surely couldn’t escape it. Judith sighed out loud and leaned back on the table. “Look, when you told me about it days ago,I thought it was something that would blow over. I thought he would get over it but he is really sending the divorce papers to you today?" Mia nodded. "That's what he said." Judith reared back with a curse. "That son of a–" she paused when Mia winced before she could even complete her words. Judith sighed. "Look, I can't help it, okay? He deserves whatever he gets from me. He is shameless and you just let him walk all over you." "I'm no fool, Judith. He isn't walking all over me." Mia argued. "Then what do you call this? Do you not have a say in this so-called marriage of yours for him to decide divorce and shamelessly tell you he's getting married to his childhood sweetheart? " Judith didn't understand and Mia didn't know just how to make her understand. Judith wasn't a romantic and it would be a waste of time to tell her cheesy stuff like; it was meant to be,they couldn't have lasted, the marriage wouldn't have worked either way; Mia knew Judith wouldn't take s**t like that from her. And so, Mia chose her next words wisely. "We were never married in the true sense, Judith. We both know the circumstances surrounding my marriage." "Bullshit!" Okay…maybe she should have just watched her friend in silence because it seemed like nothing she says would change Judith's mind about the situation. "What load of crap? You were never married in the true sense yet you spent three years of your life and marriage abroad, trying to please him while he appeared in business news every morning like he controls the freaking world?" Judith raved like it was her last and only attempt to bring Mia to her senses. Mia's mind did go down memory lane the moment Judith mentioned the three years she spent studying in France. Everything she ever did was for or because of him. The evening of their marriage, there had been a little after party hosted by the king's family. Most of Dorian's associates from the business world came by and congratulated them on their wedding. That night, Mia had merely clung to Dorian's arms, feigning smiles and ignoring the pain her deathly high heels gave her ankles as she walked all over the hall with him. All she did that night was watch him talk to his partners while she gaped at them and drank more than a couple of time from her wine glass. Her relief had known no bounds when the night was finally over and the newly married couple were seen off to their car to go to their new home. Mia's wedding night wasn't what she imagined. Not like she had expected much from Dorian, but she also didn't expect to be handed a visa, passport and flight tickets that sealed her fate. "You stopped studying because you needed to marry me.". He had said at first while Mia was still looking down at the flight tickets and wondering what the hell they were for. "I won't have an uneducated wife stand beside me just for show. Study. I don't care what you study." And that was that. Mia couldn't even cry that night. She had been too dumbfounded to. Hell, her parents had booked an hotel for an all expense paid trip to Buenos Aires for their honeymoon and she had been looking forward to it. She couldn't even believe the flight tickets and Visa were scheduled the next day. He had planned it all without even telling her. Mia could have stayed. She could have torn up the Visa and tickets in his face but it was the first time Dorian had asked her to do something. He had never asked her for anything growing up or even after they were engaged and became the talk of the whole town. She wanted to please him so much and she did. Mia left for France the next day after giving her parents flimsy excuses that she was doing this because she wanted her marriage to work and not because Dorian asked her to. He had prepared everything. The school, the apartment she would stay at and even monthly allowance paid into her account. He has prepared everything and she had no idea all along. And so, she spent three years of her life studying abroad. Each day she lived sending pictures of her grades, the beautiful places she visited in France, random pictures and sometimes, even pictures of herself that she thought were really cute. Dorian didn't reply anyone of them. Each message was always opened and read but he never replied. It had been hard for her but the thought of it getting better once she returned home kept her going. As always, her judgement was wrong. "Are you even listening to me?" Judith's voice zoned Mia out of her thoughts. Mia raised a brow with a small "huh?" sound leaving her lips. "See? You aren't even listening and I know what you're going to say. You didn't do all of that to please him,am I wrong?" Mia wished she was. "For heaven's sake Mia, you studied communications because of him." Judith reminded Mia of yet another one of the things she did for the sake of her marriage. Mia would never forget how she had asked Dorian what she about the course she should major the day she was leaving for France and without looking away from his phone as he typed away on it, he had said; "I don't care." Mia didn't take it to heart and just left like she was supposed to. When she couldn't decide on her own, she had called Judith and told her what was happening. Although, Judith cussed and raved on the phone for minutes, she finally told her to go for what she loved. Maybe because of the silver spoon that she grew up with in her mouth or the comfort her parents provided for her, Mia never really had a dream. She never really had what she "loved" or hoped to become. It might sound crazy but Mia wanted to believe that there were a lot of people like her who haven't had their s**t figured out like the rest of the world. She didn't learn to sing at seven like Irene did, neither did she have the drive to control a large business like Dorian did or even a dream to become a caring nurse like her best friend. Did she have to have a dream to live? It seemed like everyone understood her except for Dorian and she would do anything to please him. Since he didn't seem to care what she studied, she chose one that fit what Dorian wanted from her. A woman who was every bit as educated as him and who could speak fiercely and bodly in public. She wasn't any of those things but she strived to be and succeeded. Mia graduated with an A class degree in communications. It didn't matter now…it was all for nothing. "You did it all for him, Mia. When have you ever done anything for yourself? I am not going to let him toss you around anymore. Do it, sign the freaking papers and get away from this life." Mia raised a brow in question. "Really?" "Are you even asking? You're going to sign the papers anyway. Do it." Mia suspected her friend had more to say. "Spill it, Judith. You look like you have a plan." Mia prodded. "It's because I do. You might end the marriage but the three years you spent trying to please him won't go to waste. I know someone at a television broadcast station and they are hiring news anchors." Mia shook her head instantly, realizing where this was going. "No." Mia muttered. "What?" Judith frowned and continued. "Isn't that what you studied? You have to make use of it, husband or not." "I didn't study it to have my face everywhere in public. Dorian has a reputation to ke–" Judith leaned back into her seat, rolling her eyes at Mia in the process. "Dorian, Dorian, Dorian, Do–when is it never going to be about him? It's always about him!" Mia couldn't sit still anymore. She wasn't exactly angry but she wasn't about to ruin Dorian's business just because of the divorce. "What do you think people will say if they see me on television?" "What did they say when he sent you abroad huh? I'm sure he paid a crazy amount of money just to silence reporters else he would have been dragged to bit as an unloving husband who sent his wife away without an honeymoon." Judith might have spewed facts and Mia thought about it. Dorian was always in the news and even for one fake scandal or another. The media was crazy about their engagement and marriage but it's funny how news didn't get out that she was sent abroad to study. "That's how powerful Dorian is! You two would probably get divorced and the world wouldn't be moved a tiny bit because his money is stuck in their throat." Judith was right and Mia hated it. She hated the fact that her best friend was always right. "Look, I understand where you're coming from but you're going to get divorced anyway. It wouldn't matter." "Not when we're trying to keep it from the family it would. I'm already pathetic enough, do I have to let my parents and his know and even look more pathetic?" Mia knew how the women of Dorian's family would dote on her like a child, scold their son for her, tear up the divorce papers and then have her return there as their 'perfect little bride'. One who couldn't manage her marriage on her own. Pathetic. "Anchoring the news won't make your parents instantly guess what's going on. They don't have to know!" Judith's idea seemed so good yet so bad and dangerous at the same time. "What's he offering for the stupid divorce? Alimony?" Mia shook her head. "I don't want anything from him." "See? You are the one who is going to be at a big loss. For once, Mia, do something for yourself. Don't think about what would happen and do something for yourself." Judith didn't wait for Mia to answer, she took out a card from her purse and handed it over to her. "That's his card, my friend at the broadcast station. You decide what you want to do with it. I'll leave first, break's over." Judith left the card on the table before standing from her seat and walking away from her friend. Seconds after she left, Mia grabbed the card off the table and stared long at it like it was going to be the next thing to decide her fate this time and not her husband. Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn’t, she was about to find out. Finally, Mia set card on the table, fished for her phone in her purse and dialed on it.
