Married to the Ruthless Billionaire
Chapter 1 (Part 1)
The wedding bells rang across St. Augustine Cathedral, but to Amara Okafor, every chime sounded like a countdown to the end of the life she had dreamed of.
The church was overflowing with guests. White roses lined the aisle, crystal chandeliers shimmered overhead, and a string quartet played a melody so beautiful it almost made the moment seem magical.
Almost.
To everyone else, this was the wedding of the year.
To Amara, it was a sacrifice.
She tightened her grip on the bouquet until the thorns beneath the ribbon pricked her fingers. The pain grounded her, reminding her that this wasn't a nightmare.
This was real.
"Amara."
Her best friend, Vivian, gently squeezed her shoulder.
"You still have time to walk away."
Amara looked toward the large wooden doors leading outside.
Walk away?
The thought tempted her.
She could run.
She could disappear.
She could leave this place forever.
But then she remembered her father's exhausted face.
Three nights ago...
"Please forgive me."
Her father had fallen to his knees in front of her.
She had never seen him cry before.
"Our company owes billions. The banks have frozen our accounts. Investors have abandoned us. If we fail to repay the debt this week, we'll lose our home... and hundreds of employees will lose their jobs."
"Dad..."
"There is only one man willing to help."
"Who?"
"Damien Blackwood."
The name sent a chill through the room.
Damien Blackwood.
The billionaire CEO every business magazine called a genius.
The man newspapers described as cold-hearted.
The billionaire who had built an empire before turning thirty.
"What does he want?"
Her father couldn't meet her eyes.
"He wants you."
Silence.
"I don't understand."
"He wants to marry you."
Amara laughed.
It had to be a joke.
Until she saw the tears in her father's eyes.
"You can't be serious."
"He'll clear every debt."
"If I marry him?"
Her father nodded.
She stood frozen.
"You would trade my happiness for money?"
"It's not about money."
"It's everything we've worked for."
"It's our family's future."
Amara had stormed out of the room.
She spent the entire night crying.
By sunrise...
She made her decision.
She would sacrifice herself.
Not because she loved Damien.
But because she loved her family.
...
"Miss Okafor?"
The wedding coordinator smiled nervously.
"It's time."
The cathedral doors slowly opened.
Every guest stood.
Hundreds of eyes turned toward her.
The music changed.
Amara forced one foot in front of the other.
Her white gown flowed behind her like a river of silk.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
At the end of the aisle stood the man she was about to marry.
Damien Blackwood.
He was taller than she expected.
Well over six feet.
His tailored black tuxedo fit perfectly.
His dark hair was neatly styled.
His sharp jawline and striking gray eyes made him look like he belonged on the cover of an international magazine.
Women whispered as they admired him.
Men watched him with respect.
He didn't smile.
Not once.
He simply stood there.
Expressionless.
Waiting.
When Amara reached the altar, their eyes finally met.
His gaze was cold.
Calculating.
As though he were evaluating a business proposal instead of looking at his bride.
She looked away first.
The priest began the ceremony.
"Marriage is built on love, trust, and commitment..."
Amara almost laughed.
None of those words belonged here.
This wasn't love.
It was a contract.
As the ceremony continued, she noticed Damien never once looked at her.
Instead, he seemed distracted.
Almost...
Concerned.
His eyes repeatedly moved toward the church entrance.
Was he expecting someone?
Or fearing someone?
Before she could think further, the priest smiled.
"The vows."
Damien spoke first.
"I, Damien Blackwood, take you, Amara Okafor, to be my lawful wife."
His voice was calm.
Deep.
Powerful.
Without emotion.
When it became Amara's turn, her throat tightened.
"I... Amara Okafor..."
She hesitated.
Every guest watched.
Her father's hopeful eyes met hers.
She took a deep breath.
"I take you... Damien Blackwood... to be my lawful husband."
The words tasted bitter.
"By the authority vested in me..."
"I now pronounce you husband and wife."
Applause filled the cathedral.
Camera flashes exploded from every direction.
The billionaire had finally married.
But neither bride nor groom smiled.
As Damien leaned in to kiss her, he stopped inches from her face.
Barely moving his lips, he whispered,
"This marriage changes nothing."
Amara's heart skipped.
"You'll have your family's safety."
"I'll have what I need."
"Don't expect anything more."
Then...
He lightly kissed her forehead instead of her lips.
The crowd cheered anyway.
No one realized it wasn't a kiss born from love.
It was a performance.
Outside the church, reporters surged forward.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
"Mrs. Blackwood!"
"How did you meet?"
"When did you fall in love?"
Damien wrapped one arm around Amara's waist.
From the outside...
They looked like the perfect couple.
But his voic
