Chapter 1
As I jolted awake to the sound of my blaring alarm clock, my mind was still enveloped in the haze of my dream. In the dream, I was walking along a path that was only partly illuminated by the soft glow of the moon. The path was lined with bushes bursting with fragrant flowers that perfumed the air with their sweet scent.  I could hear the rustling of the leaves as a light breeze swept through the area and the occasional chirping of crickets. But the tranquility of the dream was short-lived as I reached the end of the path and stepped onto a small balcony that overlooked a breathtaking view. The balcony was adorned with more flowers, their vibrant colors standing out against the dark night sky. And there, at the other end of the balcony, stood a figure with blonde hair—someone I couldn't quite recognize in the dim light. As I approached her, I noticed that she was clutching at the balcony railing with trembling hands. Her shoulders heaved with silent sobs. Despite the sadness etched on her face, she managed to give me a small, sad smile. It was then that I reached out to embrace her, hoping to offer her some comfort in her moment of grief. But just as my arms were about to wrap around her, my alarm clock rudely interrupted my dream. I sighed and got out of bed, feeling a bit groggy. After splashing some cold water on my face, I looked at myself in the mirror. I had dark circles under my eyes, and my hair was a mess. I made my way to the window and gazed out at the world outside. The sun was just starting to rise, casting a soft pink glow over everything it touched. And as I stood there, watching the world wake up around me, I knew that whatever the day held, it was going to be unlike anything I had ever experienced before. I decided to take a quick shower, hoping it would help me feel more awake. As I stood under the hot water, I let my mind wander. I couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was going to happen. After getting dressed and checking my watch, I realized that I was running late for my appointment with my grandfather. He had asked to see me earlier in the week, and while we had spoken on the phone, I could tell from his voice that he was worried about something. As I made my way to the car, I couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over me. The sky had turned a foreboding gray, and the wind had picked up, sending leaves rustling across the pavement. I tried to push the feeling aside, telling myself that it was just nerves, but the more I tried to ignore it, the stronger it became. I drove to my grandfather's house in silence, my mind racing with all sorts of scenarios. Maybe he was sick, or maybe he had received some bad news. Whatever it was, I knew that I had to be there for him. When I arrived at his house, the driver opened the door for me, and I stepped out onto the gravel driveway. I took a deep breath and walked up to the front door, feeling a knot form in my stomach. My grandfather opened the door and greeted me with a warm smile, but his eyes betrayed a sense of worry. "Come in, come in," he said, leading me inside the house. "I have something I want to talk to you about." We sat down on the couch, and he poured us each a cup of tea. As we sipped our tea, he began to speak.  "Son, I know that you've been feeling anxious lately, and I wanted to talk to you about it," he said, his voice gentle. As my grandfather and I lounged on the couch, my mother, Savierra, joined us with a smile that lit up the room. "Zavier, my dear son!" she exclaimed. "You look so handsome today. I can't wait to introduce you to some of my friends' daughters." I let out a resigned sigh, bracing myself for the inevitable conversation. "Mom, I'm just not interested in dating right now," I replied. "But why not?" my mother asked, her expression clouded with concern. "You're young, successful, and attractive. There are so many wonderful girls out there who would love to get to know you." I rolled my eyes, used to her attempts to set me up with eligible women. "Can we please talk about something else?" I asked, hoping to change the subject. My grandfather cleared his throat. "Actually, there is something I need to discuss with you, Zavier," he said, his voice serious. I felt a knot form in my stomach. This was it. The moment I had been dreading since I received the news about my grandfather's decision "What is it, Grandpa?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. My grandfather took a deep breath. "I have decided to retire from the business, Zavier. And I want you to take over as the CEO of the company." I stared at him in disbelief. This couldn't be happening. "But, Grandpa, I don't know anything about running a company," I protested. My grandfather placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "You'll learn, my boy. I have faith in you. And I will be here to guide you every step of the way." My grandfather had always been a successful business person, and he had built his empire from scratch. But he was getting old, and he had decided to pass on the family business to me. I had never been interested in running a company, and the thought of assuming such a massive responsibility made me anxious. All I wanted was to live a peaceful life far away from the pressures of the business world. But my grandfather had other plans for me. He believed that I had the potential to take the company to new heights, and he wanted me to take over as soon as possible. I felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the responsibility that was being thrust upon me. But at the same time, I felt a sense of pride and honor that my grandfather had chosen me to carry on his legacy. I took a deep breath, trying to process the news. "Thank you, Grandpa. I appreciate your faith in me," I said, still feeling overwhelmed. My mother beamed with pride. "That's wonderful news, Zavier! I always knew you had what it took to run the company." I tried to ignore her comments and turned to my grandfather. "What do I need to do to prepare for this new role?" My grandfather took another sip of tea before replying. "There are a few things you need to learn, such as managing the finances, handling negotiations, and leading a team. I have a plan in place to help you learn these skills, but it will take time and effort." I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. "I'm ready to learn, Grandpa. I won't let you down." He smiled, his eyes shining with pride. "I know you won't, Zavier. You come from a long line of strong leaders, and I have no doubt that you will do great things." We spent the rest of the afternoon discussing the details of my new role, and my grandfather shared some of his experiences and insights with me. As the sun began to set, I realized that the feeling of dread that had been weighing on me earlier was gone. I felt excited about this new challenge, and I knew that I had the support and guidance I needed to succeed. As I drove back home from my grandfather's house, the sense of dread I felt earlier only intensified. I tried to shake it off, but the feeling wouldn't go away. As I turned onto my street, I saw that my house was surrounded by police cars and an ambulance. My heart sank. I parked the car and ran towards the house, my mind racing with all sorts of terrible scenarios. When I got there, the police stopped me at the front door. "I'm sorry, sir, but you can't go in there. There's been a break-in, and we're still investigating," one of the officers said. I felt a lump form in my throat. "Is everyone okay?" I asked, barely able to get the words out. The officer hesitated before replying. "I'm sorry, sir, but your housekeeper was killed in the break-in. We're still trying to piece together what happened." I felt my world crumble around me. I couldn't believe it. Not only had someone broken into my house, but they had killed someone too. And all of this happened on the day I dreamed of my ex-girlfriend. As I stood there, stunned, I realized that my jinx had struck again. I had dreamed of my ex-girlfriend, and something bad had happened. I knew that I had to be careful from now on to avoid triggering my bad luck. But I, myself, don't know how to control my dreams.
