Sienna~
Adrian’s face went pale. “Dear gods,” he whispered, stumbling back. “This can’t be happening…no, no…”
Lucian’s growl rumbled through the night. I shuddered from the sound. He threw the car door open and ran, stumbling through the trees like a desperate animal.
But Lucian was faster.
He lunged after Adrian before he could take another step. I froze in the passenger seat, my breath coming in gasps as the sound of snapping branches and claws meeting flesh filled the forest. Through the window, I caught flashes of Adrian’s body slamming into the ground.
Every time he tried to crawl away, Lucian dragged him back. This wasnt a fight. It was a slaughter.
Adrian’s pleas turned hoarse. “Please! Lucian… I was…I didn’t…”
But Lucian didn’t listen. Instead, I heard the sounds of bones breaking, and my breath seized. My hands trembled so badly over my mouth to stop myself from crying out.
Adrian’s screams grew faint. Then… silence. His body went still and Lucian stood over him, chest rising and falling, every breath filled with rage.
For a long moment, he didn’t move. Then slowly he straightened, his form shifting back. The fur faded, claws retracted, and there he was… His chest bare and covered in Adrian's blood. His eyes were still burning bright red even in the dark.
He just stood there, breathing hard. I didn’t move.
Part of me wanted to run to him, to make sure he was okay. The other part was frozen in place, terrified. Not of him, but of what I’d just seen him become.
Then he walked towards the car and yanked the door open. I gasped, pressing myself back against the seat.
His voice came rough, filled with anger. “What the hell were you thinking?”
I couldn’t answer. I just stared at the blood on his neck, the veins still pulsing in his arms, the wildness that hadn’t fully left his eyes.
“Lucian.” My throat tightened. “You killed him.”
“Not yet.”
I breathed a short sigh of relief but he interrupted.
“Are you insane? How could you come here, alone, to meet that bastard?”
The anger in his eyes made me unwilling to speak.
He stepped closer and I found my voice. “He said he had my babies. I thought—”
“So you came out here by yourself?” he snapped, cutting me off. “At midnight? To meet the same man who almost killed you once?”
“I didn’t have a choice!” I shouted back, my voice breaking. “He said he’d kill them if I told anyone!”
Lucian’s jaw clenched so hard I thought it might crack. He raked a hand through his hair, smearing blood across his forehead. “You should’ve called me,” he muttered. “Damn it, Sienna, you should’ve called someone.”
Tears blurred my eyes. “I also didn’t want to put you in danger.”
“You think I care about that?” He asked, even angrier. “You have no idea what it felt like when I sensed your fear. I thought…” He sighed deeply. “Never mind what I thought.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke. Only the sound of crickets and the wind brushing through trees filled the silence between us.
“You sensed it?” I asked quietly.
His gaze met mine, now softened. “Of course I did. You’re my mate, Sienna. Your wolf calls to me when you’re in danger.”
My cheeks burned, and I looked away, pretending to adjust the hem of my sleeve. “I’ve never… felt anything like that before.”
“Like what?”
“Like… you.” I muttered shyly. “It’s unbelievable,”
His expression softened for a moment before he spoke again.
“What’s unbelievable…” he said, his voice rising, “is you walking straight into a trap with no backup. Do you ever think before you act? You could’ve died, Sienna.”
“Can you let it go already?” I groaned. “I didn’t exactly plan for this.”
“Yea, sure. Going to meet your ex wasn't planned.” I sensed a tone of jealousy in his voice.
My mouth fell open. “You’re impossible!”
He smirked faintly, the first sign of something human breaking through all that anger.
Despite myself, a reluctant laugh slipped out. He looked at me then and for a heartbeat, the world went still again.
“You scared the hell out of me, Sienna.”
My chest tightened at the way he called my name, and I quickly turned away, praying he hadn't noticed the blush spreading across my cheeks.
“Let’s get you out of here,” he said finally, picking his phone from the ground and dialing his beta. “You’re bleeding.”
“It’s just a scrape.”
He gave me a look. “It’s bleeding, Sienna. Sit still.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re so bossy.”
“And you’re so stubborn.” He leaned towards me, inspecting the cut on my neck, his touch unexpectedly gentle. “You have a death wish, you know that?”
His closeness made my breath hitch.
“Not when you're around,” My voice was barely audible.
That earned me a small chuckle. “You’re lucky I like a challenge.”
His words sounded casual, but they made my heart do a ridiculous little flip. This man was nothing like the beast people had made me out to be.
“Elias. Bring the car down here. Now.” he ordered on the phone.
Only then did I notice a black SUV parked at the far end of the road.
When the car arrived. Elias jumped out, scanning the scene in shock. “Alpha? What happened? Are you…”
“I’m alive,” Lucian cut him off. “Just take Sienna home.”
There was a pause. “And you?”
“I’m going to Crimson pack,” Lucian said simply and my head snapped up.
“Why?” Elias asked.
“To get her babies.”
My eyes widened. “What? No, you can’t…”
He held up a hand. “It isn't up for discussion.”
“You’re going alone?” Elias appeared confused.
“Yes.”
“Lucian— that’s suicide!” I yelled.
He gave a small, humorless smile. “Not for me.”
Elias took a step forward. “Alpha, st least take some guards. Crimson territory isn’t safe.”
“I can handle it,” Lucian said firmly. “Just get her back safely.”
I bit my lip, trying to find the right words, but all that came out was, “Please… be careful.”
For a moment, the darkness in his eyes faded. “I will.”
Tears stung my eyes as he lightly brushed his thumb across my cheek, a tender gesture that silenced every word I might’ve said.
I was escorted into the black SUV and Lucian stood still until we'd driven a distance.
Then he turned and walked into the dark.
—
The drive back to Blackstone blurred past along with the way Lucian had said ‘You’re my mate’ as it replayed in my head. Every time I thought of it, my face grew hot.
When the car finally slowed, I blinked out of my thoughts. There was a sleek pink cabriolet parked at the entrance. It looked very expensive.
“Who’s here?” I asked.
Elias hesitated. “An unexpected guest.”
“For who?”
He shifted in his seat. “For the Alpha.”
I frowned with confusion then stepped out and that’s when I saw her. She stood by the fountain, perfectly composed, one hand on her hip, the other brushing back her flowing blonde hair. She was stunning, with that confident, polished beauty women wear when they’re used to getting what they want. Her perfume reached me before her voice did.
“Oh,” she said brightly, her lips curving as she came toward us with her luggage. “You must be the Lycan girl.”
I stopped in my tracks. “I'm Sienna.”
She smiled, brushing her hair back, and my eyes immediately caught the large, glittering rock on her finger.
“Rachel,” she said, her voice soft. “Lucian’s fiancée.” Then, almost casually, she added, “The future Luna of Blackstone.”
The words sank in slowly like poison, and my stomach dropped.
“What?”
