The first meeting
This day was not new.The sun shining high in the sky and everything blooming in the throes of spring Amy had to find a way to ensure a steady flow of income. No,She was not a fresh college graduate struggling to put her life together, though the latter part of the sentence was as true as the shining sun,she was far from being a fresh graduate. She was a woman of 28 years of existence.Ahh,she sighed so many years into this rat race.So many years of knowing life was different for her.But what could be done now..........
The day had started and so Amy had to start from her small rented apartment to cafe. The small distance between the cafe and her so called home made her accustomed to a number of mixed feelings. On the way to the cafe she would come across a number of people. From happily married women to a few like her. From gracefully aged aunties to wandering kids.Everyone seemed to be in a hurry in Chicago.
Amy looked at her watch 9:30 am already. Her manager would kill her.Only if he could kill her....Mr. Davidson would not kill her.Not after trying to woo her.He was married and had a kid still... Though she had politely turned down his past offers of coffee, dinner and drinks, she thought he would just understand. For past few days he seemed irritated with her.Finding faults in her work was more of a routine to him.this she understood was the rejection he had faced. She had to keep this job,she couldn't fathom losing it especially when she had nothing.
Entering into that old school cafe, she greeted everyone with a smile.Mr. Davidson was nowhere to be seen. She sighed, at least the day had some hope.Putting on her apron, she was ready. She was calculating few bills when she sensed something...
This was a man in a navy suit standing at the counter.
"Good morning sir,What would you like to have?"She greeted in her usual tone.
She could see that the man's face held no expression.
"One Espresso,please"
The man was well built in her early forties. He was wearing shades.
She politely smiled and handed him a cup of steaming coffee.Grabbing the cup he quickly left,it was then she noticed a rather tall man outside the cafe.Wearing a dark grey suit, he was looking at her.their eyes met for a few seconds and then she quickly lowered down her gaze. The man was elegance personified,a living example of perfection.
After few minutes she was busy in her usual work, taking orders from the customers, serving them, greeting them. She forgot about the incident.Apart from this the day went well.Returning from her work she bought groceries. She entered into her apartment and took a good look at everything.Life was already on the complex side,at least she felt at ease here. She was thinking Mr. Davidson. He was unusually exasperated these days. Not with her only, his irritation mas mimicked in every move.He would should at the staff, would call them useless. She was not afraid of him.He was not the owner of this cafe.He was only the manager. But he could complaint against her if he wanted to.
The small cafe was owned by Mrs. Smith,a widow in he early fifties. She was a humble woman. But then she was rarely here. She owned a small boutique to the south of the city. She was mostly busy there. The woman was nice to her employees. She would listen to them patiently.
The payment was not much but it was satisfactory. She considered this job because of the dire need of money she had.She decided that once she saved enough she would start her higher studies.
What if life seemed unfair, she had things few people could only hope for.She had a roof over her head, she didn't have to sleep hungry. What else was needed?By the grace of God she completed her graduation working odd jobs and with the aid of few scholarships. In her head she always repeated
" A calm sea never made a good sailor" and this kept her going.
During weekends she would often visit a book shop. The shop owner had befriended her.Jonathan was his name.He was a charming man in early thirties. She noticed that he loved to talk. She was rather a shy woman. She would talk less, observe more and this man was the complete opposite.
She prepared stir fry for dinner.Sipping on her coffee she was briefly reminded of the man she saw outside the cafe, earlier that day.Soon her attention was diverted to a new article on Psychology she saw on the internet.
She loved to study these kind of things. She majored in Psychology and business.Back to college days, she was always practical and calm. She was a sincere student and was adored by her professors. She spent a substantial time in library, reading about anything and everything. The whole world seemed to be a mystery.Novels were her favourite and she was particularly intrigued with Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet. She loved the character of this fierce, outspoken woman. She herself was very calm and composed.
Then life happened and all this love for reading went for a toss.Exiting college premises she realized that life had more plans for her.The first struggle she had was for earning a livelihood. She didn't apply to any upscale job because of her shy nature. She wanted to learn few more skills before she did so.
I had been few years, and she was still waiting.Working in the cafe helped her a lot.Not only she was able to pay her bills now,the regular interaction with customers pulled her out of her comfort zone.
Being an introvert was not something she could afford now.She smiled to herself, what a transformation, life indeed was a mystery and she was looking upto it.
She looked at the night sky from her balcony.Except few stars it was dark. She muttered a simple prayer she learnt during her childhood.Yes,she was thankful for the day.She was indebted for everything she had.She thought of her Grandmother, whom she loved dearly. She was reminded of the happy times working in her kitchen garden. She was the woman who taught her to believe in herself.Without her,the childhood she had would have been more difficult. She was her caretaker, family, teacher everything she needed.Thinking of her, a lone tear escaped her eyes. She switched off the lights and went to the bed.
