Marriage
“Olivia, you can meet my boyfriend.” My twin sister Sophie promised as she dragged me outside.
My hair stood at the end when I saw a tall elegant man got out of the car. I was dumbfounded looking at how hot he is and far to fascinated by the man stepping toward my sister and I. I really don’t know but Sophie seemed to be forced to act.
“Olivia, meet My boyfriend Wilson Smith”
He said Hi and smiled
I saw him extend his hand to shake me but I couldn’t bring out mine to shake him and I couldn’t stop looking at him. Finally I got the chance to shake him when he snapped his eye brows together at a delay I placed my cold hand on his large, warm one.
“Olivia” I murmured breathlessly. His strong handshake sent tingles up my spine and throughout my whole body.
“Edie was right about you two being identical” His laughter was a sweet pleasant music to my ears.
“Ahmm, yeah.” I smiled sparingly and both my cheeks got warmed up.
Edie is what he calls Sophie. The both of us are Edie by name,I am Edie Olivia and my twin is Edie Sophie. Edie was our mother’s name but we didn’t get to see her because she died while giving birth to us.
“How long have you been dating?” I asked as we went into the house.
Wilson turned to look at me and I changed my gaze. My heart was beating so fast. “Let’s see,six months” he answered.
I just nodded my head in and we went inside. We found papa sitting on one of the sofa. His eyes were cold when he looked at me. I bowed my head and stopped walking.
“What’s wrong?” Sophie whispered.
“I think I should leave. He might get angry.”
“No. Don’t leave. Stay with me.” She was begging me to stay. Wondering at the tone of his voice I chose not to leave.
Dad stood up as Wilson approached. “Wilson smith! I thought tot weren’t going.”
Wilson smiled and shook his hand. “Hello sir.”
We all sat down and the maid brought a snack to the living room. “Is there any special reason you choose to visit at this hour? It’s past dinner time.”
Wilson cleared his throat and took Sophie’s hand. “Sir I want to marry your lovely daughter.”
I think my Dad was expecting the announcement because he wasn’t shocked. But l could feel Sophie clinging next to Wilson. I also felt her anxiety.
“Isn’t it too fast? You both just knew each other for only a few months, am I right?” I asked.
Dad gazed at me with a very dark expression. “You’re not involved in this conversation and you’re not the one to decide on anything here. So, leave.”
“B-But, ‘Pa—“
“I said, leave! Now!”
I got up and walked towards our pool.
I removed my slippers and dipped my leg in the water. I don’t know how long I’ve been mesmerized by the absence. I just felt someone was beside me. Sophie also dipped her feet in the water.
She sighed. “I’m going to get get married, Olivia.”
“You didn’t reject him? You’ve only dated for just six months.”
Her feet partly played with the water. “We need him,Olivia.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Dad lost while gambling and he got himself in a huge debt. I think we’re going to sink with him, Olivia.”
I looked into the distance. “Sophie.”
“Yeah?”
“He’s your boyfriend and the both of you love each other; I think everything will be alright between you two. You’re so kind and understanding, I’m pretty sure the relationship will work out.”
She laughed softly. “Sometimes I think I’d rather be you. I also want to be invisible.”
“You don’t want to know how it feels to be treated like thin air, Sophie. It’s really hard. Why did mom die because of me?”
They thought dad had only one child. I was not seen on the ultrasound because Sophie allegedly covered me and when mom took me out she was out of breath.
“It’s not your fault at all. Other people’s brain are just so narrow,Olivia. One day, he will he will realize that he’s so lucky to have a daughter like you.” Sophie said softly as she looked back into the water.
“Congratulations. You’re going to be a Reyes.”
“Yeah.” She laughed so hard. “Someday,I’m going to be as free as a bird.”
I never asked what she meant by that.when Wilson left I watched him drive out with his card till I could no longer see it.
A few days passed and Sophie was too busy making arrangements for her wedding. We hardly see each other anymore because of the amount of work she does. While I do a lot of clothe designs because my customer needs to see that tomorrow. I drank a lot of coffees just to keep myself awake, because the deadline was so small, and I still lacked the best of designs.
I was sitting in front of my table and my eyes were shutting when my door got opened and Sophie entered. I was feeling sleepy. I looked at my watch and found that it was almost four o’clock in the morning and I was still awake.
“Hi,” she says.
“Why are you still awake at this hour?” I yawned.
She changed her gaze. “Uhmm, because I just want to sign something.”
I looked at the folder she was holding.
“Huh? What’s that?”
“Ahm, I want to make you my partner in the new business I want to build. Uhm, just sign here.”
I stretched out my hand. “Give me.”
When I touched the folder I felt so sleepy. Sophie immediately approached me.
“Sign that and go to bed.”
“Wait, I’ll read more to know about it.” I searched for my reading glasses but she stopped me.
“Don’t. I won’t fool you because you’re my twin sister. Just sign here,” she says. I nodded and picked up the pen and signed it. I sparingly smiled at her and walked over to my bed.
After three days I flew to Los Angeles to deliver the drafts. I scheduled the flight on the day of Sophie’s wedding because that’s the only day available. After all, it’s peak season this December.
When I got to the airport since of the passengers were upset due to the delay of the flight. I panicked because the ceremony will start in a few hours. I called Sophie to tell her about my situation.
“I’m sorry, Edie Sophie. I can’t make it to your wedding.” I felt like crying. I didn’t want to miss my twin sister’s wedding. But because I also didn’t expect my plane to crash back to Florida.
“What?!”
“I’m sorry. My flight will be delayed.” I’ve been walking around the airport a few times and I’ve been so restless.
“E-Even at the reception?”
I bit my lower lip. “Sorry.”
“No,Olivia. I’m the one who should be sorry.” Her voice was trembling.
“Huh? Why? Did you do anything bad?”
“Nothing. Alright. Be careful.”
“W-wait”
“Bye, Olivia.” She said almost in a whisper.
“Hey, wait!” She didn’t wait for me to speak. I called her several times but she didn’t answer my calls.
After Sophie’s wedding day, I boarded a plane and I quickly travelled to Florida.
I paid for the taxi when I got to our subdivision. I walked towards the house. I opened the door and sighed when I saw dad and Wilson in the sitting room.
My face lit up. Wilson is still here that means Sophie should be here too.
Where’s Sophie?” Dad got up quickly and threw the flower vase next to him at me and I avoided it. I screamed In shock.
“Why did you do that?”
“You’re still putting up a scene like you don’t know?! Where’s Sophie!?” I looked at Wilson. That was the first time he had his voice raised at me and he was so furious.
“What? I don’t know.” I was so confused.
Dad came up to me and dragged my hair. I cried when I saw the anger in his eyes.
“What did you tell her?!” He pulled me closer to where Wilson was. I winced at the pain I felt.
Dad released me and pushed me to stir next to where Wilson was.
I looked at Wilson. His eyes swelled as if he had just cried. “Don’t you know better where she is? She’s your wife.”
“No she isn’t.”
“What do you mean by that?”
He showed me a paper. It was supposed to be their marriage certificate. But I was even more surprised when I saw my name and my signature on it.
“Tell me, Olivia.” Wilson touched my arms. I winced in pain. “Where’s is Sophie and what’s the meaning of this?!”
“I don’t know!” I’m so confused. Why are they so mad at me? “I’m also confused as to why my name and signature is on the marriage certificate.”
“Bullshit!” Annoyed he says. “Come with me, and we’ll check to see if I’m really at fault.”
We went somewhere and checked my signature there. When I found out that it wasn’t my signature, the marriage was null and void.
“What’s the result?” I was devastated to hear Wilson’s furious tone.
I bent down and straightened up in my chair.
Facing us was a man who checked my signature and a lawyer.
“This is so authentic, based on the strokes of your signature and your signature on the marriage certificate are identical.” Said the professional who check my signature.
“How?” I swallowed. “Can’t a marriage be annulled?”
“Annulment.” The attorney said we were invited as well.
I looked at Wilson. I saw the anger in his eyes and he was also furious. I suddenly remembered Sophie coming into my room and someone signing my document. Is this the marriage certificate?
“F*ck!” Wilson is very mad. “I have to get married to get father’s inheritance for me! I did get married but not ti the woman I love.”
I was hurt by what he said.
“Let’s have an annulment.” I said.
“It’s not possible yet. According ti the bylaw, you can’t file fo am annulment a day after the being married.” The lawyer took a deep breath and looked at Wilson. “Mister Reyes, don’t you have to get your inheritance? Why don’t you suffer a little first? You can file an annulment after you get your inheritance.”
“Damn it!” He stood up and left the room.
I was so startled by the loud closing of the door. My tears flowed.
I felt so unwanted.
