39 Breath shallow, Adam opened his mouth to compensate as he tried to catch up with his father. He still wasn’t sure where they were—some kind of state park—and Virgil had outpaced him from the moment they’d left the vehicle and entered the woods. Luther brought up the rear. “The last time we went after Danny, you got us in the door. But Teddy’s the one who brought me in and held us all together,” Virgil called over his shoulder at Adam. “Without Teddy’s help, the two of us have to do exactly the same thing, the same way, and at the same time.” Virgil paused in a clear patch, turning in a slow circle as he gazed up at the surrounding canopy.
