Chapter 28We got to the hospital as fast as we could. I ran through the front doors and up the stairs to Katharina’s room. I was met at her door by Doctor Mueller. His expression told me all I needed to know. “I’m sorry, Mr. Battles. She passed ten minutes ago. We did everything we could. Her heart just gave out.” The words were like bullets smashing into my body. My legs weakened, and I collapsed halfway to the floor before Charley and Dr. Mueller grabbed me and helped me into a hallway chair. “What? What?” I heard myself saying over and over again. “That’s not possible. I just talked to her this morning. Please. Please. Tell me you’ve made a mistake.” Dr. Mueller’s white coat shimmered and flickered, and I was having trouble seeing. Then I realized it was tears that blurred my vision
