Chapter 29I had no appetite that night, so I sat on the front porch by myself sipping Scotch whiskey. For the first time since the attack, I was feeling queasy and unsettled. I wondered once again if it was necessary to annihilate everybody in the room, when it was the Bledsoe brothers I was after. Around midnight Charley joined me on the porch. I mentioned the misgivings I was having. “You’re damn right it was necessary. How do you know who took part in that attack up in Wisconsin or who was manhandlin’ Katharina and mighta caused her heart to seize up?” he asked. I was silent. “I’ll answer that for you. You don’t. It coulda been three or five or ten of those sonsabitches. And I’ll tell you something else. Anybody in that room with them whoremonger Bledsoes wasn’t no innocent cherub.
