The year is 1919, I am Viola Wilson, May 21. Today is my special day my birthday and the day I finally get to leave this junk of a town. Currently, I live in a small country town in Kansas. Tomorrow I will start my travels for New York. I do not wish to remain a small town country bumkin. I need to be free and experience the world. Holding my long hair I played with the ends hoping to keep myself from saying my plans to leave out loud. What is the point of secretly saving up hundreds of dollars in secret just to tell others what you are going to do with it? I glance around the house, I hope no one knows what I am doing. Carrying a bag of luggage which is filled to the brim with clothes shoes and jewelry. I am leaving tonight an no one is going to stop me. Wearing men's clothes I lifted my hair up and stuffed it into a hat. Gotta be a little careful besides what girl beside me would wear men's clothes? Sneaking out of the house was hard to sense my parents' room is not far from my room. Sneaking out of the house I felt as if I could release a sigh of relief. Looking back for but a moment I turned back around and rushed away. With my things with me, I started my car which was several houses down and headed to the train station. It wasn't long before I stopped at the train station and got a ticket. I sat for only a few hours before the train arrived. Hearing the rumble of the train I stepped on board. Looking back I said out loud, "I won't return." With that, I stepped inside and heard the rumble of the train start to move. sitting down to the seat closest to the exit I looked out the window during the bumpy ride. It only took a while for me to doze off and fall into a light sleep. Feeling a shift of my body I opened my eyes. Looking outside I saw something that caused me a shock. Standing before me with towers erect was Chicago. Standing up I looked out the top window of the train. Feeling the train jolt to a stop I almost fell over. My hat fell off my head making my blond hair fall out of the hat. Making it obvious that I am a female. Noticing someone pass me I grabbed my hat as fast as I could, but before I could grab it someone picked it up. Looking up a man with cuffs on his sleeves and wearing a black suit with a cowboy hat handed me my hat. Not knowing what to do I grabbed my stuff and shoved my hair back into the hat. With a nod, I quickly rushed off the train leaving the man in shock. I felt so embarrassed, I should be more confident, with just a glance at his hands and arms I knew that he worked out and his hands were definitely twice the size of mine. Shaking my head my face turned bright red at the thought of his handsome face. Rushing off I set up another train ride looking at the ride times I realized that I hadn't eaten since 3 a.m. with that thought I looked for a food stall. Looking around I rammed into a bold chest. Stepping back I quickly spoke, "Oh I am so sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going just now." Looking up I saw the face of the man I ran into and realized that he is the same man whom I rushed from. Feeling the hat slipping from my head again I grasped at my hat trying to keep it in place. Hearing a snicker I looked back up at the man with confusion. That was when I heard him speak next to my ear, "Doll yer a long way from home." Releasing my grip from my hat I covered my ear blushing hard. Stepping back I tried to distance myself from him that was when I was mortified. A low grumble rose from my stomach making me cover my stomach. I'm pretty sure I was so embarrassed that I turned blue from being mortified. That was when the man grabbed my wrist with a firm grip smiling he said, "Common lass lets get ya some food." Getting dragged I realized that he meant no harm when we arrived at a food stall. Ordering food the stranger paid for my meal feeling grateful I ate a hotdog staring at the man. Looking at him for a while he seemed to realize I was staring at him, "Lass if ya keep looking at me like that I will think that ya are into me." Shocked I shook my head, "No sir I was just wondering why you are being nice to me." Hearing him laugh I felt like as if I was floating. Shaking my head he looked at me he said, "Doll call me Glen bein called sir makes me feel old." Looking at him I almost laughed because he definitely wasn't old. "Glen, call me Vio." With a tilt of his head, he said, "Vio ain't yer real name right?" Shaking my head, "Nah Vio is what I am called back home." Nodding his head he looked at me and asked, "What's yer real name doll?" Feeling that if I said my name it wouldn't matter so I said, "Viola my name is Viola." Smiling he looked up at the time and said, "Be careful doll ye better get going." Shaking my head I walked toward my train when I turned around to thank him he seemed to vanish into thin air. Shaking my head I knew I will probably never see Glen ever again. Stepping onto the train with my things I sat down and removed my hat feeling my hair fall past my shoulders. Touching my head I stood up and carried my bag to the restroom. In that area, the train seemed to shake even worse. Opening my bag I grabbed a simple off the waist dress that went to my knees. Locking the door I slipped off the men's clothes and put on the dress. Grabbing a bag with jewelry I put on a little makeup and pinned up my hair to seem as if I had a bob cut. clipping on a simple pin I put the clothes that I removed into the bag and slipped on flat boots. Unlocking the door I carried my things back to my seat and slipped on the hat once more and grabbed a piece of paper and started to sketch. I sat there sketching for what felt like hours until I finished sketching a picture of the man that I had met earlier. His face in the sketch seemed to come off the page seeming so real. Opening up a folder I ripped out the paper and slid it into the folder. Putting my things away I felt tired once more and fell asleep.
