CHAPTER 1: Giving myself for my sister
The room was filled with dangerous men standing in the shadows, all holding guns. In the middle of them sat the mafia boss, looking completely calm in his chair. My sister and I were on our knees in front of him, crying and begging for mercy.
He didn’t even give us a glance.
He just sat there with a cold, terrifying calm that made my whole body shake. There was no pity in his eyes.
When he finally looked down at us, he looked at me first, then at my sister.
My sister looked so small, fragile, and weak. I probably looked like someone who would try to fight back.
In a second, he made his decision.
He was looking at her. He wanted my sister.
“No!” I screamed immediately, tears rushing down my face. “Please. Take me instead.”
I couldn't let him take her. She was just a child. She didn't deserve any of this horror.
“Please,” I begged again, my voice shaking. “She hasn't done anything. Take me.”
The mafia boss looked at me.
Then, without saying a word, he smiled.
That smile scared me more than anything he could have said. It was cold and cruel.
He gave a quiet command to his men.
“Take her.”
My heart completely dropped.
Before the men could grab me, I rushed toward my sister and hugged her tightly, holding her as close as I could.
“Stay strong, okay?” I whispered, trying so hard not to break down. “I'm going to be fine. Just stay safe.”
With my shaking hands hidden between us, I quickly slipped my mother's phone into her hands and whispered the password to her.
“At least we'll be able to talk to each other,” I told her.
I pulled away from her, even though every part of my body wanted to stay and protect her.
One of his men grabbed my arm roughly and pushed me toward the waiting black car outside.
I turned around and looked back at my sister one last time.
She was crying on the ground, reaching out for me.
I wanted to break free and run back to her so badly.
Clang.
The car door closed, shutting out the sound of her crying.
As the car drove away into the dark night, I rested my head against the cold glass window and stared blankly at the passing streets.
My mind wouldn't stop racing.
What would happen when I reached his house?
What kind of life was waiting for me?
Would I ever see my sister again?
Tears kept rolling down my cheeks.
And then, my mind went back to the day everything went wrong.
The morning my parents died.
It had started like an ordinary, happy morning.
My mother was in the kitchen, making a birthday cake for me.
My father, my sister, and I were sitting together on the couch, playing games on my phone and laughing.
We were happy. We were a real family.
But my father seemed different that morning. When he walked out of his room, he looked stressed and deeply worried.
I noticed it right away.
“Dad, what's wrong?” I asked him softly.
He looked at me for a moment with sad eyes.
“Nothing,” he said gently.
Then he kissed my forehead and kissed my sister's cheek. I didn't know that would be one of the last times I would ever feel my father's love.
A sudden, loud knock came from the door.
I jumped up and went to open it.
The moment I unlocked it, everything changed forever.
A group of masked men forced their way inside. I screamed as they shoved past me and locked the door behind them.
“Get down!” they yelled.
My brain couldn't even process what was happening. Why were they in our house? What did they want?
Then one of them pointed a gun and ordered my father to bring out everything he had. When my father hesitated, terrified, they dragged my sister up, held a gun right to her ear, and threatened him.
I watched helplessly as my father ran upstairs to get whatever money they wanted.
When he came back and handed it over, the men took it. For one quick moment, I thought they were finally going to leave us alone.
But then one of them shoved my sister hard, and she fell to the floor.
My mother immediately ran over to cover her, and my father rushed in to shield them both.
And then
Everything turned into complete noise and horror.
I remember the loud gunshots.
I remember screaming until my throat hurt.
I remember seeing my parents fall to the ground, blood spilling everywhere.
I just stood there completely frozen, unable to wrap my head around what I was seeing.
The men in masks left right after, vanishing into the street.
That was the morning I lost my parents.
And now, sitting inside this stranger's car, I was being taken to the house of the man who had just taken my sister away from me.
I pressed my forehead against the cold window and closed my eyes.
And for t
he first time, I wondered if my life would ever belong to me again.
