My Best Friend Has an Abnormal Love Life

"Do you have everything on your list?" Mom asked. She handed me a freshly made cup of coffee before taking the seat across from me at the breakfast table. "I think so." I tapped my pencil on my notepad. Everything was crossed out but I couldn't help but feel like I was missing something. I had a week left before my move in date at Oak River University. "Is Mia excited? What's she majoring in?" I laughed slightly. "It's all she's been talking about. I don't know what she's majoring in, but she's excited about finally dating." Mom didn't look too happy about that. "I know you girls are adults now, but still be careful. Oak River isn't like a regular school." I knew what she was trying to say. I had my own concerns as the move in date drew nearer. My hometown and the surrounding ones had the highest population of wolves, lycans, vampires, and the like. Going to a mixed university had it's share of dangers, but they also had the best living conditions and professors with an eighty-nine percent graduation rate. "I know you're concerned, Mom. I already promised Mia's parents I would take good care of her." "Take care of yourself, too. Juggling work and studies and personal life is going to be a lot harder now that your father and I won't be with you." "I'll be fine." I got up, having finished my coffee. "I'm going over to see Mia. She said she needed help doing some last minute packing." I kissed Mom on her cheek before heading out the door. I got in my 2013 Volkswagen and drove to Mia's. Mia held up another dress to her body. She looked at herself in the mirror, twisting and turning in all directions. "What do you think of this?" She said. I looked up from the latest copy of Reader's Digest. She had a cocktail length dress up. The dress was sleeveless, black, and shimmered all sorts of colors in low light. "Where are you going to wear that to?" "Frat parties." Mia smiled devilishly. "If I stand out, I'm bound to catch the attention of a few wealthier suitors." "Wealthy suitors?" I scoffed. "Apologies, Miss Mia. I truly did not know we were in olden times. Shall I call your mother up from the drawing room so that we may indulge in lemonade and scones?" Mia shot me a dirty look. "You don't have to mock me." She threw the dress onto a pile. She pulled out a blouse this time. A simple white, silk blouse with solid puffed sleeves and faux pearl buttons. "If you pair that with the A-Line black skirt that could make a good interview outfit." "Interview?" I looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her brows had drawn together in confusion. "Oh, are you not looking for a job during freshman year?" "Nope." Her brows relaxed back. She got a dreamy look in her eyes. "I'm hoping with my good looks and sharp wit I'll win over the creme de la creme and have everything paid for me. And once I meet my future husband I won't have to work." "Mia," I used my warning voice. "I know you can take care of yourself, but I need to remind you. The people at this college aren't like you and me. What if your future husband is a vampire? Or, what if you end up as a mate for a werewolf? Your ideal future might not be ideal." "Oh, if only I could marry either." Mia said in a dream like state. She gave a fluttery sigh as her imagination ran wild. "Mia? Mia!" I snapped. She shook her head, coming back to reality. "Sorry. Anyway, are you all ready and packed?" "Mostly. I feel like I'm forgetting something, though. I have my laptop, two weeks worth of clothes, interview clothes, dresses for formal occasions, my lamp, my notebooks, pens and pencils, games, books, my e-reader, my chargers, my phone, my keys, my car, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, plates, cups, utensils, an umbrella, a poncho, rain boots, and my first aid kit." "We're going to college, not a month long trip to a ski resort." "It's better to be prepared!" I winked. "Whatever." She rolled her eyes. "What kind of guy do you think you'll end up with?" "I don't plan to date." "What?" Mia shrieked. "We're going to be on our own! No parents! No restrictions! And you're not even going to try to lose your virginity?" "If it happens it happens. I'm not going to go out looking for it, though. I want to focus on meeting new people and getting good grades. I need to pass with a high GPA since I'm going on a scholarship. I don't even know if I'll have time for anything else." "You say that now, but wait until we get there! We'll be mingling with millionaires! We'll be the hottest freshman there!" "Hottest human freshman." I mumbled. My hushed words reached her ears. "I don't care what anyone says. When I get glammed up I'm going to blow everyone away. Vampires and werewolves and human men will bow to me and offer to make my wildest dreams come true." Something in my gut told me this was going to be a bad idea. Forget a personal life. My free time would be spent making sure Mia wouldn't be getting into any trouble, or worse, getting into a situation in which she could wind up dead.
