3. Exultation

Months had gone by and I had officially graduated from college. I had forgotten that night and Rose had became obsolete to me. The deli across the street from us had ran out of business and the owner was selling, with my left over money I decided to buy it off him and create a bookstore that doubled as a part time cafe. The month of December was the coldest month, as a person and as my spirit simply longed for more in life not love but something more, a family perhaps. The cafe opened and some 5 year old kids ran into the store asking for the latest kid books. I asked them: “Hey find your mommy and I’ll give it to you plus a cake pop for free! In the meantime those books will cost a hundred dollars”. They all reacted scared and nervous and ran back out the store. I pushed the counter and checked outside to see one of the little ones stuck in the middle of the street with upcoming traffic. He was as tall as a car rim and he was bending over after dropping his toy in a pothole, followed my gut and ran out there for the kiddo, I saved him and an old lady in her Beamer. I looked up to see who was responsible for such neglect, and it all came rushing back so fast yet so slow as I looked up and it was her. Rose stood with a little hump in her belly and looked surprised. I did lose weight and changed my overall appearance so I came to her and acted as if I wasn’t blown by her appearance, the baby cooking in her oven, and as if I didn’t even know her. “Hey miss you should watch these kids they almost got swooped up by that senior citizen over there” she responded sarcastically: “yeah yeah I know, they aren’t mine by the way.” I took it as cheap attempt of flirting with me but I declined it she just neglected 4 random children and one almost got injured or even killed. I came back at Rose and said: “Whoever kids these are they aren’t safe bring them to the shop if you aren’t gonna watch them the books can do a better job at keeping an eye on them unlike you.” She looked at me in disgust and I felt good about it these kids didn’t deserve it. She flicked me off and said: “WELL FINE f**k THE KIDS” I started yelling back and forth with her until something snapped in me: “THAT LITTLE s**t IN YOUR BELLY PROBABLY CAME FROM THAT DORM ROOM IN STANFORD HUH?”. The earth became distantly quiet for what seemed like years and she quietly responded: “H-how did you know?” I replied willingly: “your dad almost killed me over a can of sss green tea Rose” and that’s when she rushed and hugged me. She said: “I didn’t know Joey I’m sorry” I shrugged her off and got the kids into the cafe “Talk to me in here Rose let’s catch up” I took all 4 toddlers and placed them down in the small but friendly children’s section of the cafe. We caught up and it was about 7pm before she decided to leave it was a Sunday which was the slowest day as everyone was up in church. Before she left she tried to kiss me and the struggle of resisting her touch and advance was extreme she had a whole husband and a baby but wanted to kiss me, the thought of it all. New Years came and I closed up the shop for the last time and I took a drive with Rose, her brother, and her husband. “Great three white racist people you’re spending the weekend with to get drunk brilliant” my mom said in a very sarcastic tone. “Ma it’s fine I’ll have my new Samsung on loud and I have unlimited data now no more data per minute.” and I walked out the door. On the ride home it had started snowing and we were on route to pass by Stanford University and when we did I needed to stop to take a piss and dip, so I took to the outdoors and used natures bathroom and came back to the car. I returned and noticed the couple wasn’t in the car only her brother. Before I could even undo my seatbelt and exit the car he held me by my wrist and said: “Are you the guy pops almost killed 3 years ago?”. I responded with a smile and said: “Actually it was 2 years ago haha but yes”. “Time for me to finish the job then right hahahaha” I stared at him and punched him immediately in his face and we started tussling outside. Rose and her husband started yelling at screaming trying to intervene. Until her husband Ricky came, the man who ended me he came with a cold .48 colt pistol and shot it into the air. Me and her brother Davidson both got up and Ricky started barking orders. “f**k this both of you need to get along THIS INSTANT!”. Before I can say sir yes sir my phone started ringing I pulled it out and it was my mom I told him: “Ricky my mom is calling hold on and calm down”. He shot my hand and the phone and Davidson swung at my lower appendix area. I didn’t know where I was until me and rose were tied up in the back.
