Chapter One: The Bloodstain Code
Chapter One: The Bloodstain Code
In the forensic lab at midnight, the fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Ava Black stood before the stainless steel autopsy table, staring at the evidence box that had just arrived. A faded label read: “1998 Serial Killer Case.”
“Twenty years,” she whispered, slipping on her latex gloves.
Her partner, Jack Morrison, looked up from the computer and pushed his glasses. “The higher-ups want us to re-examine this case. Apparently, there’s new DNA technology.”
Ava opened the evidence box. Inside were several vials of blood, each clearly labeled. She picked up the first one, gazing at the dark red liquid. This was her secret—she could “see” the victim’s final moments through the blood samples.
She closed her eyes and let the vial touch her skin. Instantly, images flooded her mind: a woman running through darkness, footsteps pounding behind her, fear crashing over her like a tidal wave.
“Ava?” Jack’s voice pulled her back to reality.
She opened her eyes, her face pale. “I saw something.”
“What?”
“The victim’s final moments. She was running, someone chasing her,” Ava’s voice trembled. “But that’s not the worst part.”
“What is it?”
Ava picked up another vial and closed her eyes again. This time, she saw the killer—a man wearing a mask, holding a knife, his eyes flashing with madness.
“I saw the killer,” she whispered, almost inaudibly. “And… I think he’s still alive.”
Jack frowned. “What do you mean?”
Ava set down the vial and looked at the date on the evidence box. “1998. But the killer I saw in the blood… his methods match recent cases exactly.”
“You mean…”
“I mean this serial killer may never have stopped,” Ava’s voice echoed through the silent lab. “He’s probably been waiting… waiting for someone to reopen this case.”
She picked up the final vial—the most crucial evidence: the killer’s blood. She closed her eyes and let it touch her skin.
This time, she saw not the past, but the present. The killer stood in the darkness, staring toward the forensic lab, a sinister smile playing at his lips.
“He’s watching me,” Ava opened her eyes, her voice shaking. “He knows I’m here. He knows I’m investigating him.”
Jack stood and walked to her side. “Ava, are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” She stared at the evidence box, a sense of foreboding rising in her chest. “The game has begun.”
Outside the lab, a shadow stood in the rain, staring at the illuminated window. He had waited twenty years—and now, the day had finally come.
The game had begun.
