Chapter 1
ELAINE
I stood by the mirror, fixing my hair for the third time. “Okay, I’m almost ready.”
Lisa stormed into the room, hands on her hips. “Almost ready? You’ve been saying that for the last twenty minutes! We’re gonna be late, and I’m not dealing with that tonight!”
I turned, brushing my hair out of my face. “Relax, it’s a birthday party, not the Oscars. We’ll be fine.”
Lisa grabbed her jacket off the bed and tossed it at me. “Yeah, well, your ‘relaxing’ attitude doesn’t work when you’ve got to catch up with people who already have their lives together.”
I rolled my eyes, adjusting my dress. “I don’t know, Lisa. I’m kind of excited about everything coming together, you know? I won’t have to live in this crappy apartment much longer.”
Lisa raised an eyebrow. “Oh, right. The new husband. Can’t wait for you to trade up to the fancy life. You’re gonna love it.”
I let out a laugh. “I think I will. It’s all happening so fast, but hey, it’s a fresh start.”
Lisa waved her hand dismissively. “Fresh start? Elaine, get real. Tonight is about one thing—celebrating. So, stop obsessing over your future and let’s go have some fun.”
I sighed but grinned. “Okay, okay. You’re right. Let’s go.”
The car zoomed through the city streets, swerving around traffic. And due to Lisa’s speedy driving, we arrived at the club in no time.
My jaw dropped as I stepped into the crowded club. “Oh my god. This place is huge!”
Lisa pulled me along. “I told you! It’s the best spot in the city. We’re gonna have an amazing time.”
I looked around, my excitement building. “I can’t believe this is all real. I’m about to live with a rich guy and never have to worry about rent again.”
Lisa handed me a drink. “See? I told you to enjoy the ride. Now, drink up, we’re partying tonight. No worries about anything.”
I grinned, taking a sip. “Cheers to that. No more worrying about money, my crappy apartment, or being stuck.”
Lisa raised her glass. “Here’s to freedom! You’re gonna live the high life now. Forget about everything else.”
I smiled, feeling the alcohol kick in. “I’m gonna enjoy tonight so much. The rest of my life starts tomorrow, right? I can’t waste a second.”
Lisa grabbed me by the wrist. “Exactly! Now, let’s hit the dance floor. It’s your last night to live like this, and you’re gonna love it.”
I followed my friend onto the dance floor, moving with the music. “This is everything I’ve been dreaming of! I can’t wait to get out of here.”
Lisa laughed. “Keep drinking, and you might end up leaving with more than just your future in your hands.”
---
I was leaning against the bar, taking another sip of my drink, when a voice broke through the music. “Hey there. Mind if I join you?”
I turned, eyes locking with a handsome stranger. “Not at all,” I said with a playful smile.
The man leaned in a little closer, his smile widening. “I couldn’t help but notice you from across the room. You’ve got a... captivating presence.”
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Is that so? I must be doing something right.”
He chuckled. “I’d say so. What brings you out tonight?”
I smirked. “A celebration. My best friend’s birthday. But really, it’s just an excuse to let loose before my life changes for good.”
The man tilted his head, clearly interested. “Change? Sounds like you’ve got something big planned.”
I leaned closer to him, my voice low. “Let’s just say I won’t be living a ‘poor’ life for much longer.”
His grin deepened. “Well, that’s a lot to celebrate. Maybe we can celebrate together.”
I felt a thrill rush through me, my confidence soaring with every drink. “Maybe we should. I’m definitely in the mood for something exciting.”
He held out his drink. “To the new life you’re about to start.”
I clinked my glass against his. “To freedom.”
The man leaned in, our faces inches apart. “You’re not like everyone else here.”
I smiled, the alcohol making me bold. “Maybe that’s because I’m leaving all of this behind.”
I and the stranger moved to the dance floor, my body swaying with the beat. “This is insane. I’ve never felt this free.”
He danced closer, his hand brushing against mine. “Freedom looks good on you.”
I laughed, feeling a little tipsy. “Yeah? You should stick around for the whole night. I think I’m just getting started.”
He smirked, pulling me a little closer. “I’m not going anywhere. Not without you.”
My heart skipped a beat, the chemistry between us undeniable. “Well, lucky for you, I’m not going anywhere either.”
We continued to dance, lost in the moment, until I realized I couldn’t hear Lisa’s voice above the music. “Where did she go?” I murmured.
The stranger shrugged. “Does it matter? You’re here with me now.”
I bit my lip, feeling a bit guilty but more excited. “I guess not. Let’s go. I’m ready to keep the party going.”
We walked toward the exit, hand in hand, as the night continued to unfold without a second thought of my friends.
My mind raced as we stepped outside into the cool night air. “I’ve never done something like this before. It feels... different. But in a good way.”
He smiled, his eyes bright with mischief. “I’m glad to hear that. I have a feeling
this night is going to be unforgettable.”
I let out a little laugh. “Maybe it already is.”
