Chapter 5
“Your mother is Alive” this was said so softly, if not for my Lycan hearing I would not have heard him. Then again right now I wish I had not heard him; this couldn’t be happening.
Standing out of his chair instantly, literally dumping his wife on the floor, my twin is standing by my side as we face our father. The utter disbelief of the words he just said was evident in the next statement my brother uttered. “What the f**k do you mean mother is alive? Have you been lying to us for 25 years? Tell me this is a joke, you would not lie to us for our whole lives, your children, tell me you would never do that father.” I can feel the anger and power radiating from my twin, his Lycan coming to the surface. Standing there facing the man he admired most, the person he most wanted to be like, looking at the man who was almost a mirror image of himself, and finding he has been lied to, seem to push Micah to the very edge.
Everyone in the room is instantly on high alert, reacting to rage his oldest son was displaying, our father also stood and his Lycan was ready to take any threat head on including his very first born. Issa is up off of the floor reaching out for my brother in an effort to calm his rage just as my grandparent race to their son in an effort to control pending destruction. Making eye contact with me, I see my grandfather mouthed the word, “Help, you know what to do.” Closing my eyes, I concentrate on the people in the room and push out a calming essence. Almost immediately the rage and tension fade to a lower simmer. Looking from my brother to my father I can see the hurt in both of them. My brother feels betrayed and crushed, my father feeling ashamed and guilty for having cause his precious children more pain and anguish. Something no parent would ever want to cause for the very life that they created.
“Why don’t we all take a seat and let your father fully explain what has transpired” our grandfather says to the room. “Obviously there is more to this statement and you both need to sit and listen before you pass judgement.” Heeding his words everyone moved to resume their seats except for dad. Turning away he walks over to the large portrait of our mother that hangs behind his desk, he stares up into her face and begins to tell a story we had never been told before. “When I met your mother, I knew she was different from the start but I didn’t know she was my fated mate. Being a witch, she was very strong and came from a very powerful family. We met at a crowning ceremony of a mutual friend who was being made an Alpha. Following the advice of her family she wore a scent masking potion for protection, they did not want anyone to know who or what she was. They didn’t even want her to attend this ceremony. The Alpha in question had save her life when they were younger and they remained friends for life. I was drawn to her and I could understand why, but not really worrying about that I approached her and asked her to dance. We spent the whole night together and things went far beyond what either of us expected. We spent the night together and the potion she had used only lasted a certain amount of time. So, imagine my shock when I woke ingulfed in the most amazing scent I have ever come across in my life. The smell of Strawberries and lemon citrus was everywhere and I did not have to search far to find the source as she was still laying next in the bed. Waking her up, I did not waste a single moment before I explained that she was my fated mate. I thought that this was the most wonderful news but she had other ideas. Almost instantly she was ready to run away, she stared at me and shock her head, this could not be true she kept repeating. I could not understand why she was rejecting me after the night together. I thought finding out we were fated would explain why we were so drawn to one another and why we fell into each other’s arms so easily; your mother was a virgin when we met. When I blocked the door to stop her from leaving, I begged her to tell me why she would refuse me, her mate and future a King. She simply stated that her family would never let us be together, no matter what I did or said she was adamant that we could never truly be together or it would mean the end of both of us.” Swinging back around to face us he continued his story. “She used her powers to move me from the door and went running. I did not see her for five months. I thought I would never see her again but she had not rejected me as her mate. I longed for her every day. Nothing could sooth my broken heart. When I did see her again it was in this very room. I was summoned here by my very angry father, he wanted to me explain why a very pregnant witch was claiming to be carrying my child. I did not care about his rath and rage all I cared about was having my mate back in my life. After I explained that she was indeed my fate mate blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, my father gave his blessing for us to be mated and married. We were so incredibly happy. You two were born a mere 2 weeks later since Lycan pregnancies only last around 5 to six months. I married and mark your mother the very day after she arrived. We were so happy and then we discovered we were going to have another baby 2 years later. This only added to our joy. Then when your grandfather was ready, he stepped down and handed the Kingdom over to me. It was during my crowning ceremony your mother discovered that I am a direct descendant of the moon goddess. We have never discussed much of our lineage, it never occurred to us that we were more than just a witch that was mated to a Lycan. During the crowning of a King or Queen, family history is researched and verified for blood rights to be passed on properly.” Take a deep breath father took a moment to gather his thoughts. Thankfully grandmother stepped in and continued their story.
“Camille’s parents were in attendance for the ceremony, they were not very supportive at first but once they saw how happy your mother was and how loved they gave their blessings. They also did not want to miss being a part of their grandchildren’s lives. But it wasn’t until after the ceremony that we felt that something was off, Camille’s parents asked to meet with us following the dinner privately. After hearing our lineage, they felt it was urgent that they also share theirs as well. You see, your mother wasn’t just any witch, she is a child of a God and a priestess.” Pausing to give us a minute to soak this all in, grandmother walks over to a bookshelf and pulls down a book that is almost too big for her to carry. It was not just any book but an ancient tome of all magical creatures.
Placing the book on the desk in front of us she opens to a section with a picture of a Lycan and a Priestess standing surrounded by other magical symbols. The symbols each contained a power. Point to the picture our grandmother continues and describes the details of the prophecy. “This prophecy is written that a full Lycan, that is a descendant of the moon goddess and a high priestess that is a descendant of the God’s would come together and create a power that this world has never seen before.” Trying to soak in everything that is being said. I start to ask the question that seems to be the most appropriate but Issa beat me to it.
“Are you say that King Raymond and Queen Camille are the Lycan and Priestess? That they have created this awesome power? And what would this power be capable of doing?”
Hearing these questions, I watch my father exchange a glance with my grandparents. Clearing his throat, “Yes, my mate and I are whom the prophecy is referring too. And we did create the power it is speaking of as well, only the correct wording would be creating the most powerful being.” Walking around to stand directly in front of both my brother and I he looks at us with both love and sadness in his eyes. “You and your sister are that power. Both born during the Solstice moon to a Priestess and the Lycan King, they will be gifted with the powers of all elements. Created to rule all and bring balance and/or destruction to a world in chaos. These powers will not reach their full potential until, upon the 30th year, they are marked and fully bonded to a mate. Without a mate the power inside with consume and slowly destroy the being.”
“That is why we have these powers, that is why we have always been different? Why don’t Vincent and Liam have powers, they are your offspring?” This question coming from Micah seems very reasonable, but so does the answer that my grandfather gives in response, “Neither of your brother’s were born under the Solstice Moon only you and your sister.”
Falling silent, everyone in the room seems lost in their own thoughts. Why has no asked the most obvious question? I guess this talk of power and prophecy has distracted everyone from one very large unanswered question. Raising my eyes to meet those of my father I had to ask, “How does this explain why we were told that our mother died 25 years ago, only to find out that she is alive and well and choosing to let her children grow up without a mother? What possible explanation do you have for that father?”
“You are the explanation, my darling.” Very pissed off and even more confused, I stand from my seat and ask plainly, “I am the reason our mother abandoned us?”
Tears are falling from my eyes as I look at the man who has lied to me my entire life. I have trusted in his every word only to find out that everything is a lie. “How can that be I was only 5 years old; I was a child. We were babies, Liam barely able to survive his birth after the attack, or was that a lie as well?”
“Listen to me.” My father pleads. “Hear the rest and maybe you will have a better understanding.” Looking into eyes filling with pain and regret, I hold my tongue and let him tell us his side of the story. “The night that we were attacked actually did happen. Three months before the attack on your 5th birthday, we had invited half of the kingdom here to celebrate. During the party a member of the counsel made reference to the prophecy. How a power of that magnitude would be dangerous. Every creature with the knowledge of this prophecy would seek to have this ultimate power for themselves and not in the interest of the greater good. The council member was a high Priest himself and knew about the prophecy and both your mother’s and my own family lineage. He pointed out that thankfully, you and your brother didn’t have any powers or show any signs of magic, or you would be in danger.” Taking a pause, he continued.
“No one knew of course that you did have magic. Your mother had cloaked you both with a spell to hide any signs or traces of the power you had at that time. We didn’t want our children to be the target of anyone’s greed and we already knew that as soon as either of you displayed any indication that you were the power foretold, every powerful supernatural creature would be after you both. The night we were attacked, one of the rouges said to me, “our master will not stop until he holds the power of the prophecy.”
“Your mother and I fought them off even though your mother was unable to shift into her Lycan. As you know it is rare for a witch to receive a Lycan and keep their powers but your mother was blessed. When the rogues attacked your mother her Lycan died that night. I thought she had died that night. I rushed Camille to the Pack Hospital, they worked so hard to save Liam, that was her wish. If it came to her life or her pups, she always chose her children. Twelve hours they tried to save your mother. I was told that her wounds were to sever and she died on the operating room table. I was handed a healthy baby boy and sent home. What I did not expect was the letter I received 10 years later.”
Unable to hold back his words, Micah yells “What letter? You have yet to tell us how our mother is still alive.” His impatience evident in every word.
“A letter arrived and it was from your mother. I thought it was a cruel joke, I watched my mate die. In the letter it explained that Camille did not die but her Lycan did. Her Magic protected her life. She forced the medical staff to pronounce her dead using magic. After recovering from her wounds, she left the hospital and all of us, to seek out those who tried to hunt for you two. The letter said it had to look real to all of us, so that she could carry out her plan successfully. Her plan was to hide in plain sight and take out those who wish her children harm and to also be able to continue to protect you as much as she could. If anyone knew she was trying to protect the power foretold in the prophecy, more people would seek it out.” Walking around behind his desk once again, he stared up at mother’s portrait, once again lost in the past. “I didn’t believe a word of this letter until I read the last line, it said- “have faith in fate, look for me in our place of peace, and I will prove my love will last all eternity.”- That was I had inscribed on the locket I had given her on our first wedding anniversary, no one knew of the inscription except myself, your mother and the elfin creature I paid to make the gift. That very night I went to our place of peace and there she was, very much alive.”
Damn this man and his secrets. “So, you only lied to us for 15 years instead. Why didn’t you tell us they truth then, when you found her? Why didn’t she come home?” This was said by Issa, holding on to her mate’s hand, she is devasted for her husband and best friend and the hurt that she can clearly see in both of them.
I knew the answer to that question. I answer for my father, our eyes locked together. “She couldn’t come home because she hadn’t found the threat to us. Her mission isn’t completed. She is still protecting us but once we turn thirty and our powers peak, she will no longer be able to protect us. Isn’t that right father?’
Unable to hold my gaze, he looks down at the floor. “Yes, that is the reason she has continue to stay away. I begged and pleaded for her to come home, to take her place with her family, by my side and as your mother. Camille is stubborn and once she decides on a course of action no one, not even the God’s themselves, can sway her. She would do any and every thing to protect those she loves most, even if that meant never seeing them again. When she refused to return, I told her that she could never come back if she didn’t come back with me 15 years ago. She made her choice.”
Silence enveloped the room as we all tried to process this new information. Micah was the first to move, standing out of his seat, sad and frustrated he said what he felt. “This is too much, how are we supposed to handle finding out mother is alive but she doesn’t want to come home? And that you all have been lying to us for 15 years, how do you except us to look at any of you the same again?” Feeling the pain her mate was going through, Issa went to console her husband and together they walked out of the room. Understanding exactly how this was affecting my twin, I made no move to stop him.
Still reeling from all of these revelations, I am ready to walk out myself but I had to say something, “I want to understand why you felt the need to hide all of this from us but right now, I just cannot do that. Do not try to make any more excuse for the choices you all made. Also, this Prince you are so interested in, will not be my chosen mate. If my birthday comes and I am still unmated and unmarked, I will be the one to live or die by my own design. None of you will get to decide my future.”
With those last remarks, I left the room and went to look for my brother and Issa. There was absolutely no chance I would be informing my father or grandparents that I had already found my fated mate. That would have to happen at some other time. Right now, I needed a distraction and I knew just where to find what I needed. The last place I wanted to be right now was alone with only my thoughts to keep me company.
