EPISODE 12: Almost, But Not Yet.

319 Words
The night felt heavier than usual, as though it carried something unfinished. She stepped onto the balcony with her mug of tea, but she barely tasted it. Her thoughts were already elsewhere on the words they had shared, on the way his voice had softened when he spoke the truth he usually hid. He arrived moments later, slower this time, his presence hesitant. When he looked at her, there was something different in his eyes uncertainty mixed with longing. They stood in silence longer than usual. “I’ve been thinking,” he said finally. Her heart tightened. “About what?” “About how easy this feels,” he admitted. “And how scary that is.” She nodded. “Some things feel dangerous because they matter.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. She didn’t look away, though. She wanted him to see her just this once without armor. “I keep wondering,” he continued, “what would happen if we crossed that line. If we stopped pretending this is just… quiet company.” Her breath caught. The space between their windows suddenly felt too small, too fragile to hold what she was feeling. “And what do you think would happen?” she asked softly. He hesitated. That hesitation said everything. “I think,” he said carefully, “that we’d risk getting hurt.” She smiled, sad but understanding. “Or we’d risk finally being honest.” The night seemed to pause, as if waiting for one of them to step forward. But neither did. Not because they didn’t want to because they wanted to too much. Some feelings needed time. Some truths needed space. Eventually, he nodded gently. “Goodnight.” “Goodnight,” she replied. As she closed the balcony door, her heart ached but not with regret. It ached with anticipation. They were close. So close. But not yet.
