The closer they grew, the louder her fears became. She felt it before she even stepped onto the balcony the tightness in her chest, the hesitation in her movements. Trust was forming, slowly and carefully, but trust had a way of waking old memories. And memories had taught her that closeness often came with a price. He noticed the change immediately. “You’re quiet tonight,” he said softly. She smiled, but it was careful. “Just tired.” It was easier than explaining the storm inside her. They stood in silence, but it felt different now. Not the comforting silence they had shared before this one was fragile, stretched thin by unspoken thoughts. The city below continued its rhythm, unaware of the quiet tension rising above it. “I’m not very good at this,” she said suddenly, her voice barely louder than the night. “At what?” he asked. “Letting people get close.” He didn’t rush to respond. When he did, his voice was steady. “Me neither.” Her heart sank and lifted at the same time. His honesty comforted her, yet it also reminded her of everything she feared how easily connection could turn into loss. “I don’t want to ruin this,” she admitted. He looked at her then, really looked at her. “You won’t,” he said. “But even if it changes… that doesn’t mean it was wrong.” The words unsettled her. Change had never been gentle in her life. Change meant endings. Silence. Starting over alone. That night, she pulled back just a little. Not enough to break what they were building, but enough to protect herself. He felt it and instead of pushing forward, he respected the distance. As she went back inside, her heart ached with a familiar conflict: wanting closeness, yet fearing what it might cost her. Because getting close meant risking everything she had worked so hard to protect. And love even quiet, patient love still terrified her loss
