CHAPTER 2: If only I could have her life
Slowly, I stood up amidst the thousand thoughts running through my mind. Thoughts that were too much for my young mind to comprehend or make meaning of.
Covered in blood, I reached for the lamp, and headed to the other side of the sitting room. There, my mum lay lifelessly, stabbed, still…. With her eyes and palms open. I took a few steps backward and closed my mouth with my hands, in a bid to stop myself from shouting.
Bawling..... I quickly placed the lamp on the floor and squatted by the wall as more tears slid down. This was just too much for me. How was I going to live without them to lead or guide me? There were incisions on mum’s right palm and her eyes were open, was that how people died?
Different thoughts came in, but they were suddenly accompanied by the different faces of the royal guards. They stormed in, and carried my parents out, one after the other. I ran outside and saw young prince Declan gazing intensely at my mum. Alpha Aiden came closer and caressed my weary face, “So sorry you had to witness this, Evie”….. He suddenly gazed at Declan before diverting his eyes back to me, “It just so happened. My condolences.”
Those were his exact words, years had passed but none of them made any sense to me…. Even till now. The only thing that had been able to stand out through the years, was my forced servitude. To the pack and everything that connected me to everyone here.
I stared at my fingers and deeply wished for a mate…. One that’d love me, take me out of servitude and give me a good life.
Even if it’s some poor omega? Really now, Evie?
‘Yes, Laura. Even if it’s some poor Omega, I don’t mind. I just need to leave this life. This is far from what I want for myself I wouldn’t have it any other way.’
Well, I do not agree with you. I want a tall, broad-chested Alpha for a mate…. Someone handsome and mesmerizing…
‘It’s very easy, Laura. Find a way to become human, then attract the man you want. If you can’t do something as simple as this, just forget that you ever had a preference. Laura suddenly went quiet. It was great to see her stay silent even for a minute.'
I wiped my tears and headed to the bathroom. As the cold water from the shower landed on my skin, I immediately imagined what it’d feel like to have a mate; to not do life alone, to not have to be under Ma Tina. How beautiful would it be?
Giggling, I washed up and went straight to bed as it was already past working hours. I woke up to a loud noise and chattering from different corners of the pack. The Mind-link was noisy too, it looked like I was the only one who slept the entire night.
I hurriedly prepared and went straight to the kitchen, to do my duties. While washing the dishes, I observed as the rest of the maids took fancy curtains and decorations with them. It looked like something was going to happen, or has it happened already?
Nancy stood by the counter facing the washing machine, and subtly smiled at me. I quickly created the mind-link.
“Did something happen?” I asked... Smiling widly. “You shut everyone out and went to sleep, that’s why you have no idea of what’s about to happen.” She said with concern etched on her face as her deep-black short hair twirled.
“I had to.... Serena….” “We all know what happened, even you-know-who” Nancy divulged to my greatest surprise.
“What? Ma Tina Knows about what transpired with Serena?” I probed further. Nancy nodded, “Yes she knows. Everyone knows but there’s nothing we can do. How’s your head?”
“I’m doing great. It’s healed already.” At that point, Ma Tina walked in. Nancy buried her head in the vegetables she was chopping, and I had no choice but to fixate my eyes on the dishes. That’s how terrifying Tina could be.
She rested her back on the wooden cabinet and darted her eyes from Nancy to me, “I can’t seem to create the mind-link between you both, why?”
No one dared to say anything, because we all knew what accompanied that question. Feeling frustrated…..she added, “You two, go to the royal house, clean the rooms, and take the royal linens to the laundry”.
With our eyes glued to the ground, we came out of our positions; bowed and ran off at once.
“Whewwww. Close call, Nancy” I heaved a sigh of relief as we took the private route to the royal house.
“There’s a pre-ceremony pack gathering later today. That’s what the fuss is all about.” Nancy confirmed.
I stopped in my tracks and gazed at her…. a thousand thoughts moving through my mind. She became alarmed, “Evie, what’s the matter?”
Suddenly, my knees wobbled, making me squat for a moment. “Sh.. should I call for help?” her voice cracked. I immediately realized myself and stood up at once. “That won’t be necessary, Nancy. We should get going.”
Following Tina’s command, Nancy was to clean the room before mine. I nodded at her and walked to the second door. Long white curtains, a 32-inch Tv, a wide bed stuffed with a cream fluffy duvet. The room had a very inviting fragrance. Whoever owned this room must smell so sweet.
On a second look, I realized that there was nothing else to do, other than removing the laundry. I took them with me, locked the door and gazed at Nancy who had tons of work to do in the other room. They were dirty clothes on the floor, the curtains were stained and torn, to worsen it all, they were not properly kept. A strong smell oozed from the toilet and the duvets were in a dilapidated state. I shook my head in disappointment, whoever owned this room was definitely someone who had a mental convulsion.
She wore a gloomy look, and a ‘please help me’ expression. I quickly raised up the laundry basket, just so she could understand me too. With a smile that conveyed so much, I shut the door and heaved a sigh of relief. At least, I didn’t have so much workload.
As I walked through the hallway, the rose flower scent hit my nostrils…. Abruptly stopping me. Why do I have to encounter Serena again? I was already frustrated as it was. I only needed nothing but some peace and quiet.
Taking a step further, I realized that her scent was coming from a noisy hall. I quickly placed the laundry basket at the back of the stairs behind me.
Curiosity enveloped me. I just had to find out why she was here and why the hall was noisy. I got closer and eventually stepped in. I secured a good spot at the back and began observing what was going on.
In the beautifully decorated hall, she was dressed in a pink silk A-line gown, with her curly blonde hair and silver shoes. Serena looked absolutely breathtaking. With the microphone in her hand, he spoke so well. I paid no attention to what she was saying, because, even as a lady, I was blown away by her looks.
On completion of her speech, the pack members gave her a standing ovation accompanied by a round of applause. It was magical… At that point, I felt something poke my heart as different thoughts clouded my mind. If only I was the Beta’s daughter and not some helpless Omega, my story would have been different.
I want to have your life, Serena. To be loved, seen, heard, and applauded by many. Why did I have to come as a stupid omega. I cursed inwardly and scoffed, the moment Serena met my gaze.
“The triplet Alpha’s would be returning home”
Instantly, I heightened my senses and listened to the conversations of the elders who stood by my left, with a few inches separating us.
“When?” the second elder inquired. “It might be tonight. They intend to attend the mating ceremony.”
The other chuckled, “Haa, cursed folks.” “You know about their curse?”
“Yes. Their curse had been passed down to them. It’s not something good to talk about, but I’ll tell you.
“Theirs is peculiar and it’s because of how they…..
“Ohh Evie, here you are!”
My heart skipped a bit
