CHAPTER 3: I DO NOT WANT TO DRAW THE CURTAINS JUST YET ‘Ohh I’m in deep s**t’. I muttered as the elders gawked at me. They seemed to have taken note of my uninvited presence. But hell, I’m sure I heard Nancy’s voice some minutes ago. I turned back and searched through the crowd behind me, Nancy looked like she had lost sight of me. I nodded at the elders who were thoroughly scrutinizing me, and fled at once. Thereafter, I caught Nancy by the hand and dragged her outside. “Are you done?” I questioned stupidly despite knowing the answer. “No, I’m not. Ma Tina seemed to be looking for you”. She admitted. Can’t she give me a restroom break? I was already getting fed up with the whole thing. Frowning, I let go of her hands at once. “I should leave now.” I rushed to the laundry and dropped the clothes there, before heading to the pack-house. “I see you’ve been having your me-time. Refreshing isn’t it?” Talk of the devil. I needed no one to tell me otherwise. Even from a distance, it was obvious to me that Ma Tina was after my life. “I had a little engagement at the laundry” I lied. “At the laundry or at the hall?” she combed through her red hair and gave me a smirk that sent chills down my spine. I remained silent, in other not to worsen the situation. With narrowed eyes and clenched fists, she seethed. “Your food is in your room. The next time you go contrary to my instructions, oh dear, you’ll wish for hell. You can take a break now”. I knew better than to take her words for granted. I bowed slightly and walked as though I was heading to my room. Just then, I looked back to check if I was being monitored. Tina had left already and there was no one in sight. At once, I diverted and took the route that led to the pack’s library. What I heard was none of my business but you know what curiosity does to the cat? It kills it. On sighting the back-door, I walked stealthily to it…. Entered, and arrived at the passage that led to the main library. I looked through the window and caught sight of Mrs. Wood. The old angry librarian who was drawn to blond’s. My plan and efforts would go to waste if I don’t find a way to navigate this library. Just a book about the curse and I’ll be okay. “Is that all you need?” A silvery voice suddenly questioned. I turned and was about screaming when he quickly covered my mouth with his hands, held me close and stared at me with such beautiful eyes. His short silver-colored hair fell slightly, as he glued his beautiful brown eyes on me….. smiling like one who had won a jackpot. “You okay now?” I blinked continuously and finally straightened myself, while gently leaving his hold. “I’m okay. I just didn’t expect….” “To see anyone? Especially Mrs. Wood, right?” he added, cutting me short. My cover had been blown. I smiled and retorted, “How about you? Avoiding her too?” He bent slightly... smiling and scrutinizing me; as his breath landed softly on my nostrils. “I was just bored.” “My name is Arthur. What’s yours?” He stretched his hands, hoping for a handshake. I quickly obliged. Who wouldn’t? “Evie here” Taking my hand, he led me to a secret entrance. On opening the door, I could see the shelves that only stayed at the last section of the library. I beamed with joy. Leaving him, I stealthily walked inside and ran my hands through the books on the shelf in front of me. All I wanted was to know about the curse of Pride-Moon packs triplets. I turned and saw him standing behind me. Feeling a little embarrassed, I added, “Thank you for earlier and for helping me find my way into the library. This is where we’d draw the curtain.” I bowed and faced the shelf. Instantly, Arthur, caught my hand, and drew me close to him. Making me gasp for breath while leaning on him. He slowly whispered in my ears, “I do not want to draw the curtains just yet. Winking, he divulged, "You are pretty." My heart skipped a bit and for a moment, I just wanted to gaze into those beautiful eyes of his…. But his actions said otherwise. He held me even close, “I’d like to know about the curse you mentioned earlier……” I gasped. My heart stopped beating. How was I going to get out of this? “Duty calls, Evie. We’d meet again and you’ll tell me about it. Agreed?” He broke the embrace, caressed my chin; and eventually placed a kiss on my chin, before walking out with a smile on his face. I stood frozen. Trying to process what had just happened. Who the hell was he? I slowly regained myself and left the mythology section. If I wanted to attract someone as charming as he was, then I should make myself more valuable, just like Serena. The medics section was filled with tons of books on midwifery, OB/GYN and other top courses. Tears welled in my eyes as the past conversations I had with mum, clouded my mind. She had always wanted me to be a nurse, someone who saves lives, not a maid who’s life revolved around serving the people in the pack. This was a perfect opportunity for me to chase my dreams, until I can actually go to a nursing school. If only the moon-goddess would give me a mate, life would be better and I won’t be subjected to servitude anymore. I looked at the ceiling and muttered, “Just give me someone to call mine.” With that, I grabbed two books on OB/GYN and one on Midwifery and ran away. I got to my room and shut the door at once. Quickly, I placed the books under my bed and just lay on the bed, re-imagining Arthur’s face and what it felt like to be held in his arms. It’d be o nice to be held in his arms, every moment and every day. I grinned as my evil thoughts appeared as goosebumps all over my skin. Evie get a hold of yourself already! Shaking my head vigorously, I sat up and reached for my food. At that point, Tina’s mind-link signal came in. “Open your door, Evie.” Shocked, I abruptly stood up and opened the door. Oh, no. Red hair looked visibly angry. I swallowed in fear. Tina came in and walked straight to the window, glancing at the people doing one thing or the other. I stood at a safe distance and awaited her message. Taking me unawares, she quickly approached me and grabbed my neck, while pressing me to the wall. I felt my heart beating 10x faster than the normal rate. Did Arthur snitch on me? Or could it be Mrs. Wood? Did she see me? Different thoughts ran through my mind but I couldn’t fathom why she was here, and why she was pressing my neck as though I was someone who had committed treason. Furiously, she tightened her grip on me, as her fingers lengthened… Piercing my
