THE CURSE
THORA
I looked up at the sky, clapped my hands. Once.
The rain immediately began to fall hard and fast.
"Rain again today," Ariande said.
"Yes," I said. "The snow... it's gotten boring. Besides, I've gotten tired of wearing this."
I looked down at myself. Already, the light dusting of snow which I wore wrapped around my body was being washed away by the steadily increasing rain.
The water now clung to my perfect figure like a dress made of molten silver.
Ariande and the others stared at me with delight, admiration and wonder, and yes, a little envy.
I smiled.
I was the most beautiful and powerful being in Vylla, in the universe even. I was the moon goddess, the queen, supreme ruler of Mithil and Vylla.
It felt good to know I was better than anyone else.
The rain had washed away the snow underneath us, revealing the flowers from every planet in the universe that pushed their way of the ground, their soft petals spreading, catching the rain.
Elion was instantly at my side as I bent to pluck a flower.
"I'll help you hold them, your majesty," he said.
He took the flower from me, bowed, pressed a burning kiss on my fingers. I smiled at him, watched his eyes dance with fierce joy.
The other gods glared at him, no doubt wishing they were in his place.
Ariande looked miserable as she stared at Elion. I suspected she liked him. Ariande could have him... for now. Elion was not very interesting anyway.
Not as interesting as Caius. My Caius.
I pouted. "Where is Caius? He promised he would be here. Is he so busy that he doesn't have time for me?"
Magros, the sky god, quickly stepped forward.
"I'm sure he will be here soon," he said. "He has never kept you waiting before."
Magros was right. Caius, the most handsome of all the gods here in Vylla, the one who all the goddesses wanted, was obsessed with me.
Maybe as a punishment for keeping me waiting, I would make him braid my hair with the petals of red tanlas.
As I raised a lock of my hair which was so long that it trailed on the ground, I imagined his eyes staring into mine as he performed this task, wanting so badly to kiss me, while I denied him that pleasure.
"Your majesty," called Xandros, the sky god, floating up to us.
I couldn't imagine why he looked worried.
"What is it?" I said.
"Your sister is back. She wants to see you. In the throne room," he said.
"Oh. Lead the way then," I said.
I was slightly surprised to see that Xierra sat on the throne. My throne.
She shifted. The clouds which the throne was made of swirled around before settling once more into a fixed shape.
"The throne is mine, Xierra," I said, absently and looked around. "Is Caius here?"
Xierra hissed. Her face twisted into a expression of hate and rage.
"You look upset," I remarked. "If you spent should more time at Vylla instead of wherever it is you usually go off to, you wouldn't be so grumpy all the time."
"Fair point, Thora," she said. "But first let me tell you all about how I've been looking for a way to kill immortals."
Behind me, I felt the others grow tense.
I laughed. "You can't kill an immortal, Xierra,"
"Really? But I've killed our parents and everyone who would stand in my way. The rest are scared of me, as they should be."
I still grinned, sure that she was joking.
She rose slowly. The dark coloured stuff covering her like a dress were black winged things. They fluttered, then settled back on her.
Some rounded her head like a halo.
She hefted something in her hand.
"Perhaps I should demonstrate," she said.
She threw something over my shoulder. I heard a cries, gasps, a hiss. I turned in time to see a dagger sink into in Elion's chest. He stared at it with horror.
"GET HER!" yelled Xandros.
Before they could attack Xierra, the dagger had sliced through all of them.
It was all over in an instant.
One moment they became silver mists. The next even that too was gone.
Xierra and I were alone.
An unpleasant feeling I had never felt before lodged in my chest.
"What you just felt is fear, sister," Xierra said. The blade whistled through the air, jumped back into her hand. "Do you believe me now?"
"But wh- how-" I stuttered.
"While you and the other fools were here enjoying yourselves, none of you noticed that the mortals on earth had almost all stopped offering up worship to you. That made all of you weak. The people you created fight, kill themselves and curse the gods for their suffering. I went into the depths of the netherworld to find this dagger forged by the gods themselves as a joke so long ago they had forgotten it's existence. They assumed it couldn't kill immortals by itself. I found a way to break that rule."
My head spun.
My parents, the other immortals gone forever?
"But- but why?" I cried.
"WHY?" Xierra shrieked. "You took Caius away from me!"
"But he loved me, not you. You said you didn't mind-"
"And you believed me!"
"I would have asked him to return to you if you had said something! How could you do this because you wanted Caius-"
"Caius?" Xierra shouted, her eyes blazing with hate. "You think this is about Caius? What about Daen, Torius... all the others gods you've taken from me and the others? You make them fall in love with you. You get bored, abandon them for the next one. Our parents cared for only you. The whole of Vylla, all the immortals on Mithil, adored you while I remained in the shadows all this time..."
I started to summon my powers. I had never done a duel before but now was the time to start.
Thunder crashed. The clouds started to spin.
"Want to fight me?" she hissed.
In a flash, she was beside me. She grabbed me, raised the dagger.
"NO!" I screamed.
She slashed my arm.
Thick, red liquid flowed from the cut. An unfamiliar sharp, burning sensation followed.
"What have you done to me?" I gasped.
"That is called blood, dearest. What you feel now is pain. One cut from the blade makes you mortal. You are going to live on earth at the pack of the worst mortals I could find."
She flicked her wrist. The clouds under us formed a black hole through which planet earth came up.
On earth I saw a battle. A man plunged a silver dagger into the heart of another. He bared his teeth, howled as his enemy fell.
I couldn't speak, couldn't think.
Xierra's voice seemed to come from far away now. "That is Jax, Alpha of Darkwood pack. He uses women only for pleasure. I'll see if you can get a beast like that to fall in love with you. You're going to have a taste of your own medicine while I'll be here watching, making your pathetic life more miserable everyday." She paused. "But... you're beautiful after all, even as a mortal, so on the off chance that he does fall in love with you, I'll curse you."
She grabbed my wounded arm.
"No! Stop!" I screamed.
Lighting flashed. The throne room shook. The black, winged things around her head spun around faster till they were blurs.
Xierra's voice echoed as she said, "If ever you both fall in love, on the day you're happiest, he will be killed. You will watch as he dies slowly. When you feel you can't take any more pain, I will briefly allow you a memory of your life here. You will remember all those whose immortal lives ended because of you. And when you're screaming in horror and grief until your heart feels like it would burst, and you're cursing me- hopefully- then I will let you die."
She released me. Branded on my arm was arm a mark that resembled a glowing sun.
The mark of the curse.
Shaking, I fell to my knees.
"Sister," I gasped. "Please, don't do this. I'm sorry-"
"I like you begging," she crowed. "But it's too late. The curse will last till the end of time. No power on earth can change it."
I turned to run. She grabbed my hair, dragged me forward.
"Goodbye, Thora. It's a long way down," she said and pushed me through the black hole.
I tried to summon the elements to come to my aid, but I knew even as I tried that my powers were gone. Blurred shapes and colours whirled past. The ground rushed up to meet me.
The sound of my screams was flung away by the rushing air. I hit the ground. My head struck something hard.
And everything went black.
