KYLIE'S POV.
The atmosphere in school was very exciting, decorations were already put up in the event hall and all around the school property. The designated DJ was already livening the mood with the latest songs. The hosts over the speakers were already inviting the guests into the event hall. The first class of designers backstage were getting ready to showcase; putting finishing touches on their outfits and reminding their models to show off the highlights of the outfits. The outfits I was seeing were exotic and, for a moment, I felt my outfit was too simple. I don't have enough time at the moment to come up with something else, so I'll have to make do with what I have. I walked out of the event hall and walked towards the management offices. "Ky" Kris' unmistakable voice called, as he waved at me. I turned to see him dressed in a hot pink track suit he had worked on last summer. Kris was 6 '2 and dark skinned, he had the body you would see in a sporting event. His twin brother Kylian is a professional basketball player but here he was in fashion school, dressed in pink and defying every gender norm.
"Girl, why are you standing out here looking like a lost soul? '' he said as he got closer and gave me a hug. "I'm waiting to be assigned a model but it's taking a little too long, what took you so long to get here"? I asked "Sorry babes, I had to get my nails done, you can never tell who's gonna come around in events like this'' he said, winking at me. Just then, Hannah and Sophie walked up to us. "Hey Kylie, hey Kris'' they said in annoying unison, sounding like a disorganised duet." How is the solo work going, Hart? Hannah asked mockingly and Sophie giggled, "You'll see for yourselves in a few minutes'' I replied. "Anyone coming to cheer you up?" She asked again "Oh I forgot, you don't have any other friends, just Kris." She said, shooting a glance at him "And no boyfriend either" Sophie added with mock sympathy. They were slowly getting on my nerves and I was trying really hard not to smack one of them across the face. "Sophie, you're one to talk, keep your deadbeat w***e of a boyfriend on a leash" Kris said in my defence. "Baby girl y'all need to grow up" he said and we walked past them. "Don't be bothered by them witches, Just because their parents are rich doesn't mean their lives are perfect besides you're way more talented than they are" he said rolling his eyes dramatically, I chuckled. "I'll have to get going, I'm on stage management duty and Mr Jean would be calling me anytime now" he said with a wry smile. I shot him a curious glance. "I know what you're about to say, Don't say it" he quickly added, blushing a little. "Sort out your model situation, I can't wait to see your work on the runway" he called out as he walked away.
I walked back towards the management office with the bags in my hand, wondering if there was any problem. "Ms Hart", the office assistant called, as I walked into the waiting room. I went quickly over into the main office, to be attended to. "Are you aware that you have an outstanding balance to be paid?" She asked. I stared at her in bewilderment. Richard had assured me that everything had been put in place so I wasn't expecting any financial situations. "Does that mean that I won't get to showcase my work"? I asked in fear "Basically, you wouldn't be assigned a model and you wouldn't be considered for any award, no matter how good your work is". She replied. I sighed heavily and was feeling so downcast all the hours of hard work down the drain just because of this. My class was presenting in a few minutes and If I call home now, what are the chances of getting it sorted out before my presentation is due? A tear escaped my eye.
"Ms Hart"! The office assistant called again just as I was about to walk out of the main office, "I know you are a hard-working student and you must feel devastated right now, but I'd advise you not to give up. Actually, you can model your own outfit, but not many students know that. You have a nice body and I know you can pull it off. You could be lucky to get the attention of visiting brand representatives. You can even still be considered for an award if you can come up with the balance before the award presentation. I know you have a lot of potential. Don't go down without a fight", she advised.
As I walked out of the office, I had a lot of questions. I had never walked the runway before and I hadn't planned on doing so today, but at the same time, I didn't want all my hard work to be in vain. I hurried back stage, ignoring the eyes of everyone staring at me. I was lucky to find Kris and I signaled him to come help me get my outfit presentable. He had a lot of questions to ask and I had a lot of tears to cry.I promised to answer him when I got off the runway. I quickly got in line with the models and once the bright lights came on I walked as though I had been training for this. However, it felt like forever and with so many unfamiliar faces staring at me, my legs were shaky and my eyes were beginning to get teary. As soon as I got off, I ran as far off as I could to catch my breath. I crouched down and cried, bemoaning my fate. "Are you okay?" I heard and felt someone tap my shoulder. I nodded and sniffed, waiting for the person to go away so I could continue bawling. Instead, I caught a whiff of his cologne. It smelled…expensive. It could only mean one thing, a big brand!. I looked up to see the most beautiful man I'd ever seen. He was about 6'2 and kept a clean hair cut and a well trimmed beard. He was dressed in a navy blue suit and had on a Rolex watch and designer shoes. I looked up into his deep brown eyes and I was smitten. I felt a little embarrassed to have met him under these circumstances. My make-up had been smudged and my face was a little swollen from the endless crying. He offered me his handkerchief and I tried touching up my face. "Nice outfit" he complemented in a deep calm voice. "
"Thanks, I made it myself" I said, standing up to let him have a full view. He stared intently at me for a while as though sizing me up, "What's your name?" He asked "Kylie, Kylie Hart", I replied.
"I have a proposal to make" he said and my eyes glistened up I couldn't believe I was being scouted in this way. "Marry me" he said. My jaw dropped and my heart skipped a beat. I couldn't believe my ears, "Pardon?" I asked, hoping I heard him wrong the first time. "Marry me Kylie Hart" he said again, his voice dropping an octave.
