They searched the woods until the sun started to set, at which point the townspeople returned to Ashville, and Andy and the others went back to the house, followed by the two detectives, Fuller and Gardner, assigned to the case.
Everyone was tired and defeated since the search party had turned up nothing, save for some footprints leading to the clearing. This wasn’t a big revelation as they already knew Becky and Emma had gone there.
