Shane hadn’t heard the officer’s question. He sat in the living room, his head in his hands.
Not long after Shane returned from the woods, two OPP officers showed up. Constables Falstad and Venner.
“Sir?” Venner said, but Shane didn’t look up. “Sir,” she repeated. “Can you tell us what happened?”
Before the officers had arrived, Shane had told the others what had happened. They looked at him like they thought he was crazy. Of course, none of them said it out loud.
He didn’t know what to tell the cops. “I don’t know what I saw. There was a clearing. The girls were there. And so was a man. There was a bright light. Then, the light disappeared, and I was alone.”
“Can you describe the man you saw?”
Shane shook his head. “No. The light was too bright. I couldn’t see much of anything.”
