All the Wrong Moves

Point of view: Tyler Baile    I never thought about destiny before this moment. I always thought a destiny was something inevitable and honorable. Destiny is meant as a blessing for love and courage but we never think twice about it. If I had to guess my destiny it would be to die for just that, honor and love. Yeah, that seems like the way to go.     A warm breeze swept through Dallas, Texas as I pondered my last nine months of my life. I have been on a journey most day dream about, left the world I knew and went to see a new one. I left the life I once lived and now travel the world but not by my choice. I’ve been hiding in places I suspect my mother would grimace at, not mention I’ve done extremely questionable things. Such as kill another living being and let someone drink my blood for their survival. I am not living the vampric James Bond life style, but the one of a fugitive. Looking back on it all it would have seemed like a much darker time without the company of Anastasia, my best friend.   The flashing lights of a cop car pulled me from self-reflection and universal placement. It was only mere seconds to realize that two cop cars pulled up right beside me on the sidewalk. I stopped my walking and slowly turned to the cars waiting for an officer to confront me. I sighed and leaned up against the brick wall casually as the drivers got out and approached me.   “Excuse me kiddo, but do you know it is well past city curfew?” The first officer asked me.   “No sir, I didn’t. You see I am from out of town,” I stated squinting my eyes from the squad cars’ lights.   “That is for sure just listen to his accent Dan,” Officer Number two retorted.   “Yeah, you sound like you are from upstate New York.”  “Clever observation Officer Daniel Robinson,” I said to him as I pulled on my zip up hoodie.    “Likewise kiddo.”   “Where do you want to do this Robinson? You must be getting tired of taking orders from the Grand Council?” I asked him looking him dead in the eye.   “Well since you asked,” Robinson pulled out his cuffs, “I’m thinking Pairs, France, but the Council has moved temporary to New York just for you.”   “What about Anastasia?” I asked him.  “Don’t worry we have a few guys going after her right now. Don’t we Jeb?”   “Of course,” the second officer replied.  “It’s a real shame Shane can’t be there, how is his wife and two daughters?” I asked him with a sinister smile as the cuffs were put in place. With a grunt and growl Dan picked me up and slammed me on the hood of his squad car.   “They are in mourning since you blew him up!”  “Hey I warned you both to wait ten minutes before the bomb deactivated itself,” I said innocently.   “We did, but when he stepped off the platform he was in six different pieces.” Daniel rolled me onto my back and let me off the hood of the car. He walked over to Jeb and talked quietly before radioing into the station that I was in custody.   “Hey before I go to New York, I just have one more thing I have to finish up,” I said to them as they pounded the pavement until the higher authorities came to pick me up.   “And what exactly is that?” Jeb asked me with a hateful glance. I just smiled and showed them the hand cuffs dangling off my index finger. “What the,” Jeb asked shocked. I took off in a sprint down the street before looking back at the two men. I laughed as I saw them trying to chase me.   “I am a little sad Robinson, I thought you knew me better,” I yelled back as I ran into the middle of a busy highway intersection. I slid across hoods and dodged trucks as I made my way to the corner of Buick Drive and 41 Street. Without looking back I sprinted down Buick Drive and turned left into the back alley of the business district. I dove into the empty dumpster and pulled the lid down on me as I held my breath not daring to move or breathe.   “Come on Jeb, Tyler went down the alley,” Daniel called out near the dumpster. The sounds of stampeding feet roared right by me and faded out to the pitter patter down the alley. Cautiously and quietly in the dumpster I pulled out my burn phone and dialed the only number in it.  “Hello Tyler,” Anastasia answered. “Let me guess,” She grunted followed by rustling on the other end, “you were spotted.”   “Yea Robinson, he has been following us since Phoenix, just like you suspected,” I whispered into the phone.   “One moment,” The line was silent for a moment but then the shrill cry rang from the phone and was silenced, “sorry I’m back. I could always pick up his scent. So back up plan okay, meet me at the sugar mill on Louise Drive and 31 Street.” The line went dead.  “Great, just when I was beginning to like Dallas and this phone,” I mumbled as I dropped the phone and stomped on it. I threw back the dumpster’s cover and jumped down to the ground.   “I found him!” Yelled Jeb as he began to run down the alley toward me.   “Catch me if you can lovers!” I charged at Jeb sending him flying into a pile of black garbage bags. I reached the sidewalk and practically skipped my way to the corner as the fresh air hit me allowing me smell where all of the werewolves and vampires were, they have a very distinct smell.   “Halt!”   “Make me!” I said as took off in a sprint.   “Don’t make me shoot you!” At the threat of a gun being fired I grabbed the street pole and spun on it like a fireman to face the man. He stopped just a meter away with gun pointed at my face.   “Well aren’t you cute youngling,” I teased the little werewolf before high crescent kicking the gun out of his hand. “Lesson number one newbie never point a gun at expert combat fighter,” I punched him square in the face before sweeping his legs out from beneath him, “you should go home to your mother before I hurt you any further.” I left the twenty year old and made my journey to the mill. Sugar mill, Louise drive, and 31 Street was all my mind kept screaming at me until I reach Cash Drive and 38th street. “Crap!” I yelled as I ran back into traffic to cross the street.   “Look there he goes!” yelled a man. I looked over my shoulder to see a large group of men in suits and black chasing me down. Gasping for breath I gritted my teeth and pushed on before nearly dropping to the ground dead on Ocean drive.   “Come on men he won’t get away this time!” I heard Robinson yell at the men.   “Yay lover boy is calling,” I could hear Anastasia say. I smiled and got up to hide in the way to small alley created by two buildings. I counted to ten letting the fear slip in for only that time period before braving the world out there. I poked my head and looked at the street closely before pulling my body out of the small space. I took a deep breath and let it out happily as I quickly made my way down Ocean Drive until I hit 31st street. My heart soared as I saw Anastasia getting out of the snappy black impala we swiped from Phoenix. I began running toward her just before three SUV’s came rounding the corner and surrounded her.   “Grab her! Find Tyler I want him alive!” Robinson ordered.   “s**t,” I gasped as I clung to the wall of the nearest building.   “Get your damn hands off me!” Anastasia yelled. I heard a shot go off and the sound of struggling stopped.   “This sedation will wear off soon so bind her with silver chains!”   “Don’t worry Anastasia I will get you out of this situation,” I said quietly before backing away down the street to the corner. I ran to the back alley of the building and I mounted myself on the fire escape. Hurry before they hurt her! My mind was shouting at me. As soon as I reached the top of the escape ladder I fell to my knees in searing pain. Yup, Anastasia is awake, stupid blood connection. I crawled to the edge of the building fighting through the pain. I gripped my new wand tightly, after all this is why we came to Dallas, and with my free hand gripped the stone ledge as I aimed my wand at the last car. Then in the stillness of the night I whispered, “Hellcran.” The third car erupted into flames.   Soon the street was full of men in suits yelling for water and to search the area for me. I smiled as they squirmed like worms. “Meshka,” I said louder than the last spell. The first car imploded in on it until it reduced itself to a pile of liquid and metal.   “Bring me Anastasia!” Robinson ordered. Jeb looking rumpled and bruised brought Anastasia out without the chains but sedated. “Tyler now I know you are somewhere out there and you don’t have wand so you can’t be far. Why don’t you give up and Miss Chevoff won’t be harmed anymore.”  “That is what you think,” I whispered as I searched my mind for a spell.   Tyler, it is me Anastasia. Be careful with your spell ok? Don’t worry about hurting me alright? Hit them fast and hard!   “That’s my girl,” I said before standing up, “over here boys! Egro!” my wand glowed brightly as vines shot up from the pavement and wrapped themselves around Jeb and Daniel. Anastasia dove out of Jeb reach, and started running to the car.   “Grab her!” Jeb yelled. A group of men and women surrounded Anastasia before she could reach the car.   “Quada Limnate!” Massive lightning bolts came crashing from the sky and struck the ground where the enemy stood stunning them. Anastasia took that moment to get over the piles of people and hop into the impala.   “Tyler you can’t go far! I will find you and I will bring you to justice! I will have your wand for this!” Robinson ranted as Anastasia pealed out.   “Robinson, just because I’m seventeen doesn’t mean I don’t know how to get a new wand, hello why do you think we came to Dallas and as for justice how is this? Argo!” The wand glowed brightly or a moment and Daniel Robinson’s voice was gone.   “Tyler, get in the car and stop taunting,” Anastasia ordered, “until our next meeting lover boy!” I laughed as I hopped down the fire escape. Once on the ground I waited for Anastasia, I climbed into the passenger seat when she drove the car next to me. Anastasia drove the car twenty miles over the limit until we reach Dallas’s suburbs. We slowed the car down to a stop in front of average home, snuck into its garage and took the bran new 2014 Camery.   “You know, I used to hate having to swipe cars but I don’t mind unless they are bran new you know,” I told her as I took the driver’s seat.   “Yes I recall how I had to give you the life and death speech, followed by teaching you how to hotwire a car. Which came easy to you,” Anastasia smiled as she lay down in the back of the car.   “Hey maybe in the life I lived before I lost my memory I used to swipe cars,” I joked with her as I backed the car up.   “Yea, can you plug my IPod in?” She asked me as she handed it to me.  “Why of course, the Philip Wesley station I assume?” I asked her.   “You know me too well.”  “Yea and it is exactly two hours before the sun rises you might want to get some sleep. I’ll wake you when we reach the boarder,” I told her as I pulled onto the highway. As usual when I drive I went back the earliest memory I could remember but it wasn’t a picture just faint voices to the picture. A man whispers, “It is okay Tyler I’m here,” and a woman screams. I don’t know whose they belong to, but I like to think they belong to my parents. Sometimes I think I see them but I know it is not possible because their faces keep changing. My mind drifted from the memory to the first time I met the only reliable people I knew today. I smiled as I remember how Anastasia and I met and how she saves me so often. Then I thought about the only other person I know will be there, Daniel Robinson. I almost laughed at the thought. Even though I didn’t like it Robinson was the closest thing I had to some kind of father figure. He is strong loyal and annoying.
