• In late December, in a faraway mountain, an extraordinary child has born. She looked like an ordinary baby crying on the top of her mother's breast. Everyone has awakened by her gentle and soft cry, it made them burst into extreme enthusiasm as it has the loveliest sound of a voice. The sweet noise of the baby woke most of their neighbor for it is like a baby humming wonderfully in the middle of the night.
"Margarita, it's a girl. A lovely girl!" The accoucheur said with a wide smile on his face. Several people began to appear inside the room where the baby has born.
"Margarita!" "Margarita!" A man said with a loud voice as he notice Margarita is not responding.
"I can't hear her heartbeat, C'mon Margarita. Open your eyes!" He trembled checking Margarita's heartbeat using a stethoscope.
The accoucheur began checking her breath, opening the airway, and giving chest compressions to deliver rescue breaths but Margarita hasn't responded. The accoucheur repeated the CPR steps to Margarita, and after 3 attempts, he finally concluded, she was dead.
"She's Gone!" The accoucheur said awfully.
"No! This can't be Drino! She's not dead." A man said looking at Margarita's full-blooded pale face.
"She deserves to die, uncle. She thwarted our Dogma!" He said hanging back his hands to Margarita's head.
He smashed his face after uttering those words.
A bulging wound elicited from his cheek.
"How dare you, Nathan! She doesn't deserve to die no matter how sinful she is!" He said clenching his aching wrist after smashing his nephew.
The accoucheur drooped his head from the bed where Margarita recumbent. Margarita lost plenty of blood and succumbed on that exact night.
Margarita has been beaten the day before she delivered a baby, she violated a belief that made her sentenced to die despite the fact that she is pregnant.
Everyone stared at them witnessing the awful event of that night.
The man carried the baby in his arms.
"She must continue her life without her mother!" He exclaimed looking at the baby. He tried to appease himself from crying. He lost her Daughter Margarita.
Everyone is staring at the lovely baby in his arms. They seemed like gazing at a precious diamond smiling at them.
The baby has a beautiful smile, her tender voice made them weak as it has the smoothest and cutest voice they ever heard.
They named her Cassie, the baby with the loveliest whine. However, after a couple of months, people believed that Cassie is a curse.
'Accursed by divine providence' that's what they labeled her. They believed that She is as a scourge of her mother's sin for violating their Dogma Belief.
"The deity has been given her the pretty whines because it loves her crying. That's because of her vicious mother!" They said.
Well, that's all they know. They never realize that Cassie possessed more than a mere wonderful whine, she has a more great power that hasn't yet been discovered.
CHAPTER 1
*18 YEARS LATER
• On a dark and eerie night, Cassie gropes her way around a wide, deep stream. She could hear the garish splash of water on her feet while cautiously walking along the stream. She could feel the whiff of leaves on her skin, the sluggish slope of tree branches wafting in the water, and the boisterous noise of crickets around her.
It was a dark evening, he had none to graze except the coatings of leaves and a branch of trees in the dingy water on her feet.
Suddenly, she saw a glimmering tiny light from far away. It delighted her a moment for she could finally behold something. She followed the little glimmering light. It twinkled magnificently at her, like a star gleaming in the distance.
After a long stride, Cassie saw a lady standing near her. She wore a tall white gown, it gazed at her with a gloomy face. She has dreadful pretty pair of eyes, but she looked exhausted and extremely pale.
"Don't show up home, Cassie!" "Don't show up!" The lady asserted to Cassie with a single tear in her eye right eye.
Cassie shudders for a minute, it seemed like she saw Ghost standing in front of her. Her whole body stiffened after hearing that faded voice of a woman. She couldn't move and remained standing until the wind gradually became intense.
The lady slightly smiled at her and weakly waved goodbye.
Ring!! Ring!!! Ring!!!
A sound of a bell rang on the table beside her. Cassie woke up startled by the loud sound of her alarm clock. She opened her eyes and sat on her bed, she gently rubbed her eyes. She turned off her alarm and get stunned. She could still remember her dream, it was nasty and unnerving.
"What was that?" She said to herself as she remember she had the same dream again. She realized it was the same woman she dreamed of last night. Oww! Not once but in most of her dreams she invariably saw that woman, she sometimes thought who that woman is.
Is she her mother?
She get off the bed and started to fix herself preparing for work.
At the Age of 18, she is working in a fast food chain as a Crew. She spent most of her time working to suffice her daily needs in the City. At a young age, Cassie had experienced various Jobs in the City of Manila, as a dishwasher, Janitor, Street sweeper, and even a garbage dealer.
She is with her friend in Tondo. She quit schooling due to a lack of finances and instead of studying, she focused on working in order to survive.
She only has her Bestfriend Lydia, a 25-year-old hardworking woman who worked as a laundromat and a Nanny. It left early in the morning to go to work so Cassie has to stay home alone.
Cassie saw a big box on the table that has a note on the top of it. It says, 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY CASSIE, HERE'S MY GIFT FOR YOU, I HOPE YOU WILL LIKE IT!'- Lydia.
She almost forgot her birthday. Gladly, Lydia never forgot her 18th birthday.
Cassie smiled gracefully and opened a box full of excitement. Her eyes widened and glowed when she saw a box of a Smartphone and cases. She immediately opened it and saw a smartphone touchscreen inside. She knew it is not an expensive smartphone but she felt happy because it is her first time owning a cellphone. She never had any Cellphones since they do not have enough money to buy but her best friend Lydia bought one for her. She conserved her salary to buy a Cellphone for Cassie.
Cassie felt extremely happy, Lydia is the only person she has. she doesn't have any family. They both live in an orphanage since they were a child until they grew older and found their jobs in the city. Life became so cruel for both of them, they do not recognize their family even once.
They live impoverished lives and sometimes have nothing to eat but they supported each other and lived peacefully despite the challenge.
It's Cassies 18th Birthday today, it is supposed to be her debut but she has to go to work. She hurriedly ate her breakfast and went out of the house, she still cannot believe she had finally had a Cellphone.
As she stepped out of the house she felt something strange. She started walking down the road and notice a woman holding a baby, she saw a thick Red number on the baby's forehead, it was number 1. Cassie was astounded as she cannot believe what she saw. "What is that number?" She whispered to herself and persistently looked at the baby. The baby glanced at her mother.
Suddenly, the woman stripped her feet on the wide pavement of the road. The baby fell to the Cement and smash his head hard on the pavement.
The incident became fast that they couldn't react to what happened. The baby badly got hurt and did not move, it lost consciousness lying on the pavement of the road....
"My Baby!" The mother screamed frantically and hurriedly carried the baby from the ground. Everyone was shocked by the sudden accident.
The baby loses its gape and has a big hole in its head.
"Bring it to the hospital!" They said frantically as everyone got panicked.
Cassie realized that the Number on the baby's forehead disappeared.
Starting that day, she has invariably seen a number on the foreheads of some people. It usually started with the number 5 and every day it decreases to 1 until they will suddenly pass out, have an accident, and die after 5 days.
After several weeks, she understood that the number on their forehead is the people's remaining days of existence.
She told Lydia about it but Lydia did not believe what she confide in her, maybe because Cassie is the kind of person who doesn't take a conversation seriously. She always makes pranks and jokes to everyone.
"Really? So you are a fortune teller now!" "Well, you really look like a fortune teller! C'mon! Let me see your Crystal ball!" Lydia said laughing at Cassie after Cassie revealed everything to her.
"No, I'm serious. I'm not making ridiculous imagination Ly. I saw a number 3 on our neighbor's head and after 3 days she died!" Cassie answered exasperatedly.
"And you will stand up for making Jokes to dead people, huh?" Lydia exclaimed, she still don't believe Cassie.
"Cassie it's not fun of you to make jokes about other people's lives!" Lydia added scolding Cassie. She thought everything is Cassie's part of pranking her. Well, Cassie always do that even when they were young.
Cassie took sighed as she couldn't make Lydie believe her. Lydia thought that everything she said was all fantasy, imagination, or a prank. She can't do anything but to keep it to herself. She knew she could make her believe that she is able to see people's remaining life by proving it to her. However, she eventually realized that it would be better if she shouldn't know anything about it. She might be afraid of her.
- 7 years Later.
"Time is up! Time to go home." Cassie told herself as she finished all her paperwork and finally, she could leave the office. She could feel her back aching from sitting in her chair for a long time. She felt tired. She carefully placed the pen and sheet on the table and peeped at the piled-up papers.
She knows she has a lot to finish tomorrow but she needs to rest.
She grabbed her purse and unhurriedly stepped out of her office.
After several years of destitution, finally she Found a great and stable Job because of her acquaintances. They saw her hard work, perseverance, and her positivity in life so he got a job in a big company as a staff. However, she continues to discern a number on a person's forehead. She could still identify people's remaining lives but she ignored them and kept it to herself. Sometimes, she wished that she could never see such a thing. It was too painful for her to see a few people die suddenly even though they were still living wonderfully with family.
Though sometimes, she helps others by implying to change and live life to the fullest for a few days before its death. She knew she can't do anything about people's death so she just lets it go and pray it to God.
On the elevator, the door opened and Cassie saw a muscular and attractive man inside the Elevator. It seemed that it was new to the office. He glanced at her and their eyes met. Cassie suddenly became stunned when she saw the number 1 on a man's forehead, which means that the man only has one day left to live.
He stared at the man and was restless.
She wants to help him but she doesn't know how.
She saw that the man was heading to the top of the building, to the rooftop.
She thought he might suicide by jumping to the rooftop so she immediately spoke to him.
"Hey man, why are you going to do on the roof deck?" She asked.
The man raised her eyebrow to her and said.
"Why do you care?" He answered.
She didn't like the man's words. He is quite philosophic and arrogant toward her but she thought that maybe he had a problem and was not in the mood and wanted to commit suicide so she became calm and energetic toward him.
"Hey man, do you know the world is so beautiful? The Air, the plants, the trees, and all the land are all beautiful. It is so good to live here on earth." She said with matching action.
The man frowned his brows a little at Cassie's behavior. He thought that she is weird so he just keep silent.
The man pressed the Rf button and the Elevator got upward. There were no passengers at that time, only the man and Cassie.
Cassie was in restless thought and find a way to alleviate the man's mind and not kill himself.
"Whatever you are enduring right now, everything was going to be fine. All your problems and worries will eventually disappear if you keep on praying! Life is worth living man!" Cassie said without a doubt.
"What?"
"What are you saying?"The man said. He laughed so hard that it could.
" I said you don't have to kill yourself on the rooftop." you're going to jump off the building right?" She said and he suddenly covered his mouth with his hand. She thought she was too quick to say what was on her mind.
This time the man burst out laughing.
"Who told you I would jump into the rooftop?"
Cassie admitted that the man had a nice smile and it looked like he had no problems at all.
Cassie saw that the man did not seem to have problems and that his life seemed luxurious because he was handsome and had expensive things in his body like his bag and shoes.
She thought that maybe it wouldn't kill itself and the man would just fall off the rooftop.
However, the Elevator opened and dinged to the Rooftop. Cassie was suddenly afraid that the man might die and she suddenly blocked the door so that the Man couldn't get out
Cassie was suddenly afraid that the man might die and she suddenly blocked the door so that the Man couldn't get out
"Don't go out!" She said to the man
"What are you doing!" The man replied
"Ouch! My feet hurt. Ouch!" She said exasperatedly
"Then go to the hospital then'" the man replied still waiting for Cassie to leave when she blocked him at the door.
But instead of leaving, Cassie didn't budge and continued to block the Elevator door
She was desperate not to let the man out. 'He might die there' she thought."No! I don't want to!" Cassie replied. She was thinking of a way not to keep the man out.
The man frowned regarding on what she said. She is too nasty with Cassie for her behavior. 'It's too bad she looks crazy' he said to himself.
"Whatever you think, I don't like you. You are not my type" The man said firmly.
Cassie's eyes widened, the man thought she would like him here so she didn't want to let her out. 'What a boldface man to say that, what if I let him die?' She said to herself with some irritation.
"Do I look like I got feelings for you?" She replied to the man.
"Then why would you block me from the door if you have no intentions towards me?" The man said while raising his eyebrow.
"You womens are like that, if you just want to spend one night with me It can only be tonight because I have work to do. Just call me later when I'm out" said the Man firmly.
'Oh, this man is exceedingly windy. He's going to die now but he has still got the nerve to be that futile. He'll burn in hell when he dies' Cassie meant in her mind feeling disgusted with the man's manner towards her. Maybe he misinterpreted her actions. If only he knew that she didn't let him out, because to avoid him falling from the Rooftop, which would be the reason for his death.
Cassie thinks that she can let him fall and die today because there is no certainty that he will be able to avoid his fate of death but it seems that she can't bear to let everything happened, trying to keep the man alive. Cassie felt distressed by his conscience when he sees someone close to death and she did nothing to save someone's life.
