Chapter One: Lurid Dreams
Heat thrums under her skin, making the sweat drip from every pore. She's walking through a snowy wood all alone, lost but not lonely. She wears nothing but a pale cotton dress that clings to every curve, but she's not cold. She's curious. She's just picked up the scent of something wonderful and wants to find out where it's coming from. Now she's walking behind a boy. Tall, broad-shouldered, dark hair very handsome from behind. He smells exotic, too good not to taste.... But he's too far away, always one step ahead. She can't tell who he is. Is it someone she knows? The light is dim, the only shine coming from the moon above. She tries calling to him to stop, but she can't speak.
Suddenly, the heat inside her ramps up. She's so hot, the very air she breathes strangles her. She sheds her thin dress - even that is too much now - and runs out of the wood and into the deep snow. The moon is full, tossed high upon an ocean of clouds. She feels the cold air swirl around her, biting into her naked flesh. It's not enough. She's still burning, a coal fire furnace cooking her from deep inside her core. She grabs handfuls of ice-cold snow and rubs it over her skin. She grabs another handful and eats it, trying to quell the fire. She lies down in a piled snow drift, letting her body sink into the freezing fluff as it melts down. It makes her feel better for a moment, then the fire rages again.
She whimpers as the pain begins to win, the fire consumes her.
Then a new pain. Her bones and joints begin to scream, stretch, and snap of their own accord. She howls under the excruciating pain, not caring if anyone finds her nude. She just wants to be saved, for the pain to end. A howl in the distance and then she sees a huge dark brown dire wolf racing toward her. She screams again as the horror of her situation registers. She's dying and this wolf is here to finish the job.
